As everyone else has had a guess at the voltage I'll have one too. The breakdown voltage of air is about 30kV per cm. The longest gap that I saw the spark initiate was about a quarter of the width of his thumbnail at 9:39, say about 4mm. So the voltage is about 0.4 x 30kV = 12kV. Also the breakdown voltage of the transistor is say 80V (it's rated at 60V) so the output voltage can't exceed 1000t/6t x 80V = 13kV, Seems about right.

Very nice and self-explanatory practical demonstration! - any tips for scaling it up in order to make continuous operation possible without excessive overheating and with higher current draw (=e.g. to drive a multilevel+multistage ion wind generator)? - how did you chose the windings ratio between primary coil and feedback coil (=6/5 in this case)? - how did you chose the resistor ohm ratings? - have you connected it to an oscillator display and checked the oscillation frequency at the transistor gate? in case you did: do you think it's optimal and what would be the oscillation frequency you would aim for? Thx!

I will show you how to make a transformer using common items from around your home. Transformers are used to increase or decrease voltage, and can be used in many different applications. For this project, you will need a 12 volt battery, some wire, a light bulb, and a resistor. First, cut two pieces of wire about 18 inches long. Strip the insulation off of the ends of each piece of wire. Twist one end of each wire around the terminals on the battery. Next, twist the other end of each wire around the posts on the light bulb. Then, twist one end of the resistor around one of the wires on the light bulb. Finally, twist the other end of the resistor around the other wire on the light bulb. The transformer is now complete! To test it, turn on the battery and watch the light bulb glow.

Yea, and if ya really wanted to have some fun, using a TL494 in an offline arrangement driving a complimentary pair amp driving a gate drive transformer that's driving the gate of an IRFP460 in a half bridge using a cap bank of about 4 nF 400 V, powered by rectified mains would be cool. Or just go all out and do a ZVS driver, however I highly doubt the "insulation" on the hand wound secondary would stand up to either. I think this guy knows that too, is why he's using a 6 V powered low wattage oscillator with half watt resistors and a low current transistor. I've used the same circuit with 10 watt resistors and a bank of TIP3055's on a large DC Flyback and wasn't satisfied with the output, but it was impressive compared to this and it's insulation has handled a lot more power than that just fine. I'd love to have a core that is three times that size, use an appropriate polyethylene coil form, appropriate layer insulation, and larger wire, say 28 AWG or even 26, wound in clean straight layers because I'm a perfectionist, a 10 turn center tapped 12 AWG primary, and a huge ZVS driver. Talk about some output current, I could use that to power my TC's. And of course have a five turn 8, or 6 AWG secondary that I could swap out, to power the induction heater circuit.

@@FredtheDorfDorfman1985, I'm thinking the same thing about the insulation there. Ideas that come to mind are wrapping the layers with heavy waxed paper and potting the layers with epoxy or something. Maybe suspending the while works in a small oil bath. Don't they use a kind of epoxy to pot the windings in a plain, old CRT flyback? Please share your thoughts on this as I am a complete novice when it comes to winding a transformer.

@NeverSuspects
@NeverSuspects 4 жыл бұрын
@@warker6186 Current is the rate at which electric charge flows past a point in a circuit. Voltage is the electrical force that would drive an electric current between two points. Volts x Amps (current) = Watts or power. As for US residential mains power, the two 120 V AC lines are supplied to the premises from a transformer with a 240 V AC secondary winding which has a center tap connected to ground. This results in two 120 V AC line voltages which are out of phase by 180 degrees with each other. The system neutral conductor is connected to ground at the transformer center tap. 240 V AC can be obtained by connecting the load between the two 120 V AC lines. In industrial use often 3 phase AC is what is supplied. AC can be a bit less straight forward compared to DC when you are talking values as one is a stable constant voltage source while AC is a sine wave with the min and max of the waveform being something like 169v ---> 0v ---> -169v ---> 0v that gives a RMS of 120v AC.

@@samsen201 True fact, some time ago I bought few cheap 18650 lithium cells from Aliexpress, with 10000mAh capacity... I knew it was bullshit from start, because 18650 cells with that large capacity doesn't exist. Best, very expensive cells from Samsung or Panasonic have up to 4400mAh. But the prce was nice, so before I buy, I ask the seller what is the real capacity and get response something like "It's 10000mAh my friend, no bullshit, top quality my friend" LOL. After receiving ordered cells I tested it for capacity with Redox discharger, and they turned out to be from 900 to 1100mAh, so not only 10x less than promised, but also inconsistent quality. I get 50% off from Aliexpress dispute.

@@davemwangi05 thank you for asking. I measured a maximum spark gap distance of 30 cm before I screw up and damaged the exterior insulation layer. And according to prestigious electrical engineering courses and also informative websites like wikipedia, the breakdown voltage of dry air at normal atmospheric pressure is 3 kV/mm or 30 kV per cm. In a future video I will make a high voltage shunt to precisely measure it and eliminate any doubt.
@davemwangi05
@davemwangi05 5 жыл бұрын
@@ElectroScience I almost bought into that 30kv/cm but I decided to be a bit more resistant, especially based on reading physics books and observations from building a voss machine. That is where insanity begins, reputable sources differing. The first problem is this, for example you're using wires and they're sharp edged, meaning point action is altering the breakdown voltage. The 30kV per cm is for parallel plates. The actual value varies based on geometry of the electrodes. You have electrical eng courses?
@ElectroScience
@ElectroScience 5 жыл бұрын
@@davemwangi05 I have a master degree in electrical engineering. Don't confound the "electric field intensity" which is a function of terminals area with "dielectric strength" which is a constant of material. Electrostatic machines accumulates electric charge over time on their terminals surface area. Therefore the electric field intensity is higher on pointy terminals and lower on perfect sphere terminals. You get the illusion of "insanity" because you only think in terms of voltage, which is a integral function of electric field intensity (thus it varies on such machines). I suggest you study Maxwell equations and the laws of electromagnetism for more details. Peace!

The voltage is the same ratio as the winding count. If the input coil is 6 turns and the output is 1000 turns, then the output voltage is 1000/6 times the input voltage. In this case 6V goes to 1000V. I’d say he got the 30kV the rule of thumb that says it takes 30kV to cross a 1cm air gap. His wires come much closer to start the arc so the voltage is much less.

When it comes to photography, there are a variety of different techniques that can be used to capture an image. One of these techniques is using electronic flashes. Electronic flashes produce a burst of light that is used to freeze the action in a photograph. This type of flash is usually powered by batteries, but there are also some models that can be powered by AC power. Another technique that can be used for photographing objects is using fluorescent lanterns. These lanterns use a special type of light bulb that emits ultraviolet light. This type of light is invisible to the human eye, but it will cause certain objects to glow. This makes it possible to take photographs of objects in the dark without using a flash. There are also some devices that can be used to create high voltage sources for anode voltage requirements of tube equipment. One example of this is a homemade transformer.

It's pulsed high frequency DC, which also provides a changing magnetic field through time that transformers need. When it first is turned on, a small amount of current flows through the resistor, through the feedback coil to the base of the transistor turning it on. Once the transistor is on it sends all of its current through the other coil with no resistance. This dump creates a strong magnetic field in the core which will induce a current in the feedback coil to the base of the transistor in the opposite direction turning it off. Once off current can flow back through the base like normal turning it on again and the one-off cycle repeats at high frequency

Hi I've got a Question: I've build myselve a Capacitor out of Aluminium foil and 3layers of 5m long Book foil. It has a capacity of around 150nF (might get higher when loaded with high voltage due to attraction force) now I will test how much voltage the foil can handle first and then load the capacitor with a voltage lower than that. I expect it to be able to handle something around 15-30KV. I've got a power supply which can output 30KV, and this is kind of save,cause the Energy and current is limited. But now i want to ask you, if the capacitor with around 150nF would be save if loaded to 30KV. So in case i touched it will it just badly hurt or might it harm myselve badly. I've read that ESD over 350mJ is harmfull and this thing would have around 68J if loaded to 30KV. So this would imply that it is very harmful. But if i calculate with 1000Ω of my body and this capacity and voltage with the formula t=R*C*ln(Umax/Utol) with Umax=30KV and Utol=30V (tolerable) I get to a time of 1ms till the voltage is at 30V when i touched it. But i've also seen in a graph, that at a current below 10A through the body it wont kill you as long as it is shorter than 10ms. So now my question is, if it really makes a that big difference if its below 10A or below 30A. (in the case of 30KV and 1KΩ) Or did i calculate something wrong?
