On KZfaq and the search engines I’ve gotten bad advice on making mustard and also on making almond extract. I’m thinking about toasting some almond slivers then putting those into my currently very bland extract to give it some flavor. I think it’s worth a try to see if I can salvage what is already made that this evening I opened to find it disappointing.. I very much appreciate this honest video about the disappointing alternatives you have tried that will spare me more disappointment and a waste of $, too. Happy Easter. 🐣 🐰 🛐

The peach kernels need to be roasted in the oven at 350 degrees for 10 minutes before adding it to vodka. My family is allergic to peanuts & tree nuts. This is the best almond flavored extract - smells just like almonds! It is the best alternative for those w/allergies.

David Bowman...Vanilla seems to be the most common home made extract, but it does take a while.

I have a bucket full of peach pits laying around that I'm thinking about making an extract of. I'm not sure if it the variety of peach I have growing (Red Haven Peach). But I found that the kernels have a very strong taste, just black cherry taste. May I ask what didn't like about your peach extracts?

They are supposed to produce almond extract...they didn't for me, however if you have a bucket full of them...go ahead and give it a try!!!

A vanilla extract group I'm in taught me that you need ( bitter ) apricot kernels for almond extract . Apparently they make a better almond flavor than almonds do .

Yup, using bitter almonds is the only way to make vanilla extract.

Kimberly Do...I have never made pistachio extract..You can always try it!

I see bitter almond oil on Amazon.

Ruth...Yes your post gave me incentive to look up bitter almond oils that are available on Amazon and other places. From what I have gleaned most of these products are used for skin care and not digested and likely have been modified in some form or other. There does seem to be some questions as to the "safety Issues" of natural bitter almonds, and unfortunately it appears that I cannot make a product that comes close to what I can buy in the store.

@@RuthMcLeanBFWHC I have tried using sweet almonds, and peach pits, neither of which worked for me. Others claim to be able to make almond extract from the pits of cherries or apricots...I may yet try one or the other of these sometime.. although I'm not a fan of apricots. LOL...Thank you!

I appreciate the honesty, thanks. I'm making vanilla extract 28 days in and it smells wonderful already. Planing on doing a lemon extract and looking for another one to do with it....

@@HerHomesteadSkills I did some research and for the almonds it's best to fill the jar completely with Slivered Blanched Almonds and vodka, leaving an inch of space in a canned jar. Imma give it a shot, definitely no pun intended.
