Maintaining the lawn with a homemade drag made from scrap metal. Little upgrades are needed and a stick welder comes in handy outside in the wind. Check it out!
The ATV I ride in this video is a 2002 Honda TRX500FA Foreman Rubicon.

I have a similar problem on my pastures every spring and I took a 6 foot tall by 8 foot long piece of chain link fence and stapled it to a 6 foot long telephone pole on either end of the fencing and used a chain to drag the setup by one of the telephone pole ends and this smooths it out wonderfully. The same thing smooths seed beds out beautifully also after planting.

The fence will nicely grind down these dirt piles like a cheese grader. Have to try that in the future. ;)

People with OCD, like me, would be going crazy at how you are raking your land, haha. You did alright with your welding mate, just remember, to have a good weld with good penetration the metal has to be clean, the more you prep your metal the better the work thats all, but otherwise awesome job

With stickwelding you're better off dragging the weld rather than pushing it. It looks like you're pushing the weld in the video. With mig/mag you push the weld, but with sticks you have to drag it otherwise the slag will get trapped inside the weld making it weak.

Can’t let those mole hills become mountains. Looks to be a very functional drag to knock down the mole hills. You probably would “enjoy” stick welding a little more if you had a more powerful welder but thick corroded material does cause enough problems at the best of times. Still turned out Pret-ty Good.
@DonnDIY
@DonnDIY 6 жыл бұрын
These mole hills have become an issue on the pastures that are not maintained by us anymore. We used to drag the whole land in the Spring time before cutting the hay in the summer so the ground stayed fairly even. Now it's bumpy as hell. Only plowing or heavily leveling it with heavy equipment would save it in the future. The power on the welder was turned up as much as possible. Worked fairly nice considering its size and carry-on capability. Also the electrodes weren't kept in a dry and warm place, that might have caused a couple of issues while welding. :D
@pjmiller5338
@pjmiller5338 6 жыл бұрын
Turn up the amps for the thickness of metal you have also a rule of thumb is for every thousandths of an inch of the electrode size go up 1 amp ex 1/8 .125 thousands of an inch The amps should be 125 amps

It is definitely frustrating for me since I don't know what I'm doing. :D But guys who do know they definitely enjoy it. I did too, at the end when the weld came out better and better. It's just weird that you have to feed in the electrode with the same hand you're holding the "torch", in this case the electrode holder. When using MIG/MAG you just point and press the switch and weld will happen by itself. Props to the old school MMA welders out there. ;)

Although I have a couple of tractors in my command I've chosen to use the ATV for most of the lighter work I do. And in the woods it is irreplaceable when you don't want to cut pathways to get through the trees with a full size tractor. ESAB is pretty neat. I've used Hyundai welding wire before and it was bad, ESAB wire in comparison is smooth and don't spatter at all compared to Hyundai.

Moles, beavers, drone shots making your ATV driving like a Roomba - and the joys of stick welding :-D Was that your grandpa operating with some brushes in the background?

I borrowed the drone for this aerial shot. Really nifty thing. Probably would like to get one in the future for traveling or something, or for whenever I can bust open some beaver dams again. Would be epic to see it from the air. Stick welding thick material isn't that bad if it's possible to practice for awhile but there are guys who do miracles with stick and weld very thin material. Props to them. :D Yup, that was my grandfather. He's still active with his chainsaw at the age of 85. :D

the grass thinks the new design is "pretty good!" you get alot of use out of those two grinders, make sure to check the brushed time to time.. if they get too short the grinder will still work but itll spark alot to the commutator and ruin the motor.. 6$ brushes can save a 100-200$ grinder.. they tend to last 200+ hours of use though
@DonnDIY
@DonnDIY 6 жыл бұрын
I've never checked the big angle grinder brushes - thanks for reminding me that! I replaced the brushes on the previous smaller grinder but the rotor was already bad and it started to eat the brushes. Eventually it died altogether. But I think what got to it was cutting brick. Even though I used a filtering cover on the tail stock to keep the brick dust from entering the motor it still wasn't enough. Now I just avoid cutting brick with the angle grinders.

Moles are doing that. I searched for a translation for our equivalent word for "mole" in English but didn't find it at first thus didn't clarify this in the video. They are quite a problem for the lawn and will ruin the pastures if they're not graded every Spring since these piles will grow through with weeds and create little hard bumps and making the pastures dreadful to ride on.

Flattening the molehills doesn't get rid of the animals. Only catching them is the best solution. Or taking away their food by spreading certain chemicals, which is not environmentally friendly of course.

I'm pulling it with the ATV and for the size of the ATV the area of the drag creates drag in proportion with the pulling power of the ATV. I've also pulled it up hill on rough terrain and had some wheel spin. It is also nimble when it's narrower in the garden between the trees. But for the large pastures you're right, more coverage would be better.

If more farmers would drag their fields, of cattle persuasion, their fields would be more useful as grass. If the cattle paddies remain, only bad grass grows, and cattle will not eat from that type cow patty. Been there, done that! And NEVER clean the metal to weld, the iffy welds will thrill, later!

How many acres of land do you have, Is it not better to mow and bale it instead.
@DonnDIY
@DonnDIY 6 жыл бұрын
I rent out most of the land and they do bale it to some extent. But I like it when the grass is cut low near the house and I mow regularly 4.1 hectares / 10.1 acres of grass using the ATV and the homemade front mount mower. If I figure out how to market the fine grass locally I will start collecting and baling it to earn money with it.

Donn DIY we harvest grass seed, these mounds of dirt prohibit us from shipping to certain countries. They get in our windrows at harvest time an then into the bags that eventual get sold wholesale. We’ve tried everything out there. Trapping is the only solution. We pay 20 bucks a critter and the trapper levels the mounds by hand. Good luck in your experiment.

And second tip, do´nt rush it! ;)
