Homemade Back Brace Reduces Back Pain & Sciatica (Try Before You Buy)

Before you go out and buy a fancy back brace thinking it’s the solution to your problem- try this first! Let me show you how to use a bed sheet as a makeshift back brace, plus explain why it potentially helps and what it means for your recovery. It’s super simple to try at home and find out very quickly if it helps your back or sciatica pain or not.
First, fold the bed sheet so that it’s about the width of your torso. Place it on the bed, and lie down on top of it such that the bottom edge falls an inch or two below your hip bones (you’ll be able to feel the points of your anterior superior iliac spine lying down). Then, tie er’ up, making things nice and snug. (Disclaimer- don’t tie so tightly that you can’t breath… oh, and bunny ears/bow doesn’t work, just tie a knot haha)
Then, roll out of bed and see what effect it has on your ability to move pain free. For example, if walking was problematic prior, then retest your ability to walk. If bending, or stairs, or a specific chore was painful, retest that with your new “back brace” on and see how it feels.
Then ask yourself… Do things feel same, better, or worse?

If same, then a back brace is unlikely to help (don't bother buying one).
If worse, then a back brace may actually make things worse, and you should NOT buy one.

Final question I get, “Does wearing a back brace weaken your core?” NO!
Wearing a bed sheet around your waist or putting on a back brace daily is not a forever solution- but it can be useful to give yourself a sense of safety when moving around while your body is healing.

I could never image that a DIY lower back brace could relieve my never ending upper and neck pain . I could not understand what is happening but it works for upper back pain when sitting

I'm so happy to have found this page. I am currently waiting on the Diagnostic Guide so I can take it. I was rear ended in Oct 2020 and went from being an active mom with a great job to no longer being able to work and honestly don't want to be here. Then in February 2023 my son and I were hit in my VW Golf by a truck hitting my son's side, spinning the car and throwing us into a telephone pole. I was unconscious for 4mins face down in the airbag. My son was okay on scene but is now having some physical issues. I have had no treatment, nothing. I was taken to the hospital where my burns from the dust from the air bags caused blisters on my hand and my throat has not been the same since yet I was not treated for those injuries just a ctscan and xrays, I have developed a cough. I have no quality of life. It took my doctor a year of my going back to see him over and over again and saying he couldn't prescribe something, only after a serious injury that required stitches which I did not get, I glued my self inflicted wound myself and then I needed an outlet for the pain and started to pierce myself, after 16 piercings and an attempt at a tattoo with a Dremel (no I am no mentally crazy, just mentally exhausted) I saw my Psychiatrist and showed him what I'd been doing, he is an amazing person and the next visit with my family doctor I was prescribed pain meds. They did help, but I am scared of them I have been taking them for awhile now and 4-5mgs a day is no longer working. I cannot do anything without ending up in pain, I'm OCD and cleaning is my outlet for stress and my home does not reflect me. I have kids but with just moving nothing is finished, and I'm in more pain now than when I was in the first accident. Only this time, by back spasms and feels like electrical shots and my legs and feet go numb to the point where I cannot get up or will fall, I've fallen so many times. I was healthy worked out everyday, my family have all since passed from heart disease, and cancer and they were diabetic as well. I had gestational so I know I was at a greater risk. My kids are why I am still here and they were the reason why I changed my life, diet and exercise routine. I was in the best shape physically, mentally and then my world changed I cannot even sit on my bed without pain starting. I am in so much pain that I cannot eat, my pain meds don't really help me because once I start moving I'm in pain. I don't know what to do anymore, I cannot live like this every single day being in ungodly pain and my kids seeing me cry. I want me back. I don't want to depend on pills. I had a strong core, but over time not being mobile I gained weight and I'm not me anymore. I can't even make breakfast for my kids. I want my kids to have their mom back and my doctor is doing lip, butt and those things and I told him with my daughter next to me that I am in so much pain I don't want to be here, and he said wait on the neurologist. My frontal lobe issues have nothing to do with the back pain and now I didn't think possible to experience more pain than I was in but here I am....I'm currently wearing the above back brace I just stood up, I didn't have to walk, bend do anything. I had previously in the hour before went to the bathroom and just from sitting for a few seconds I found myself back to laying on the couch trying to pull my knee up to my chin to stretch my back and lessen the pain. It hurts to breathe and I don't normally tell anyone but I asked my brother to use his account so I could look up back braces home made. Please tell me what I should do, or what I should be asking my doctor. The only thing they saw was my upper 3-4 now have arthritis. I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and my Psychiatrist will help me with my family doctor but I don't know what I need.

Ugh…. Going on 7 days , very little sleep and dull pain 24/7 and occasional shooting electric pain down left leg. Wish you weren’t so far away. I appreciate the alternative approach to low back / butt pain causes and solutions.

Hi doctor first sorry my english is not good, i am a truck driver and i work on off road or rock road and i think the place is not good for my kidney there was pain on my kidney and i go to clinic and checked the doctor say your kidney is ok but there is pain on my kidney and i drink lot water daily ,and when i see on internet kidney belt protect that but in my country there is no kidney belt and i see your video so can i use sheet or any cloth wrap on my kidney or on my back to protect my kidney? Deceptive Title. Title made it seem like the video was a legit DIY "homemade back brace". Title should mention something along the lines of: "How to test (at home) if a back brace is right for you".

@@khione8044 with a little creativity... why not just cut the bedsheet at it's ends and use it? Problem solved. It then becomes a homemade back brace... used to do this in the hospital for patients... or at home (home health) folks would walk around with bedsheet back brace... tail hanging behind them throughout the house. Why can't a bed sheet be "a lasting brace?"
