Keeping livestock in a barn attracts a never ending stream of rodents such as rats and mice, that carry disease and ruin your feed.
Rats and mice are not only a nuisance, but they are also a hazard to all the animals in your barn, because they chew wires that can start a fire.
This is a homemade electric rat and mouse killer that you can make yourself, just using hardware cloth and a simple electric fence charger.
This way you do not have to use poison, that could harm your livestock and pets.

Just throwing an idea in for you. With the bottom wire layer, shape it into an upside down dome so after contact hopefully the body will roll away from the side mesh 🤔

Do you ground the box with a rod or don't bother grounding?
@2755kansas

I see you ran a separate wire to a grounding rod and a neutral to the cage; but since the 3 prong wire has a ground is running a separate wire to a grounding rod necessary? Can you just run a neutral wire from the ground node to one of the mesh components and a hot wire to the other mesh component? I'm struggling with either needing the ground wire through the box as opposed to either relying on the house ground or running a grounding wire from the mesh plate directly to a ground rod and bypassing the box all together. Great idea/video and I'd appreciate your response.

Great idea! Thank for sharing your videos! I had a huge rat problem in my yard too. Then I watched Shawn Woods Mousetrap Monday. Now I manageable rat problem now. I have learned a lot to kill rodents. I been subbed to you for a while maybe KZfaq messing with me. I haven't watch your videos for a while. I think last video on you was like 6 months ago. I will check your page.

Nice setup for that particular situation, i like the cage idea. In my garage i noticed they were coming in through a small hole at the bottom of a door where it meets the jamb. So i took a short piece of black 2" ABS plastic pipe and drilled two 1/8" holes and fed the hot through one hole and the neutral through the other then spread them apart about an inch and a half so when they crawl through and both wires contact their back......zap!!! I have it plugged into a dedicated circuit that trips immediately and i used some thin aluminum flashing to protect the wall and door about 2 feet up from the floor in case they catch fire. My results are: as soon as one got fried i left it there for a week and havnt had a single rodent come in that way since. Effective.

How many joules is this charger? I'm wondering if I can get away with the smallest one I see online (0.1 Joule) or if that won't be enough to kill a rat but simply annoy it.

is the neutral side connected to a ground rod laying on the ground as well as well and the white wire to the trap ? Hard to tell by video?
@SurvivalistGardener
@SurvivalistGardener Жыл бұрын
Yes...Sorry about that... in the first 3 seconds of the video you can see that the green cap on the charger has the white wire going to the trap and a black (insulated) wire going to the grounding rod.

nice, im trying to find how to make one shut off when the rat is zapped, some rats found a small hole in the hard to reach low angle area of the roof, dont want to poison then die under the roof and smell. would like to zap what ever comes in or out, but dont want to burn the house down. I wonder what kind of THING would trip off a system?

Good question. That's why we did ours on (fireproof) cement board...in a barn there is lots of straw so flammable material are everywhere.
@DLexEdition

There isn't a positive and negative wire in AC power lines, that's only DC power. The white wire is the Neutral and the Black is the Hot wire.
@SurvivalistGardener
@SurvivalistGardener 3 ай бұрын
You must have a wire go to ground from the green terminal block so that the fence charger will work. Since the negative in the trap was insulated because it was glued to Hardy Board, I used the second wire wrapped around the grounding rod next to the trap.

I am interested in building one of these. I was just going to use the 110v from the wall but I believe it won't kill them. Can you share with me the model # of that unit you got. I would be discouraging to buy one under powered. This unit looks like a Gallagher , but has a different name and thanks for this video ahead of time.
@SurvivalistGardener
@SurvivalistGardener Жыл бұрын
It is made by Gallagher... it seems that they all are. This is some private label that I think I got from Tractor Supply. In any case, if you set it up right, it will supply about 10,000 volts, but the amps are low so it won't kill you, but it will kill a rat/mouse...Don't use 110V directly... the amps could kill you.
@tonio909
@tonio909 Жыл бұрын
110v from the wall wont do anything, you need high voltage, if you are handy you could use a taser gun or a mosquito killer and wire it in the same manner.

Do you have the information on the electric fence charger. Will it kill a rat? Thank you
@SurvivalistGardener
@SurvivalistGardener 9 ай бұрын
I use chargers that put out between 7,000 and 10,000 volts. The amps are low, and you could get zapped by it and not like it, but it wouldn't kill you. But if a rat is stuck in a space and cannot escape it, he will have a heart attack.

Brilliant👍 I'm thinking about building a hardware cloth mesh mat I'll park my car on with insulating tape running in ridges and a positive aluminum fence wire glued on top every 5 rows to discourage then from hanging out under it and leaving a mess. Did you guys ground this innovative contraption into the soil, I see a 2nd black cable from the fence controller ? Btw, that's a smart wife you have👌

that 2nd black wire from the charger is the AC cord that goes to a power outlet.

I was thinking a lamp cord plugged into a ground fault circuit interrupting multi outlet with some hardware cloth in strips on some old vinyl tile. Very dangerous for kids and pets and I have neither. Soon as the mouse shorts it the GFCI switch goes to off. Might literally blow the mouse up though. I'll know by tomorrow.

How many volts is the fence box'?
@SurvivalistGardener
@SurvivalistGardener Жыл бұрын
The fence charger uses 110 volt house current. It converts that to between 7000 and 10,000 volts for an electric fence (although the amperage is very small) so it hurts when a big animal (or human) touches it, but it won't kill them. A mouse or a rat? That's another story.

Thanks Jim! Yup... and this rat has avoided every conventional trap I have set, so hopefully this will be the trick. I saw him once, when I went to investigate the goats who I heard were upset at night. I had my flashlight and he stopped and looked right at me... unfortunately, I didn't have any means of dispatching him at the time, and by the time I got back with an air rifle, he was gone--- of course.

I'm thinking about hooking one up to a 15 Amp breaker. This is smart the rollers on a 5 gallon bucket. What a joke. He weighs almost 3 pounds, and he walks the rim around the top of the bucket, so I was just thinking about 110 volts thinking maybe since he has out amrted me a few times your design on top the bucket because rats are nowhere in the range of mice and chipmunks it is hooked to a breaker may drop it down too ten Amp or the Victor shield traps well yesterday and today spent to much time and there are two for sure laughing at me that's why I came across your video. I like it. But fire is a factor for me.thanks guys
