This is a video showing the build process of my freewheel crankset with triple chainrings. I started with a normal crankset and then cut off the mounting brackets and used them with my build. The crankset had removable chainrings which are much easier to work with when compared to ones with rivots. I am using a big 56 tooth drive sprocket as an adapter to fit both the freewheel and the 4 bolt pattern chainrings. I am using a heavy duty freewheel from Sick Bike Parts. My hope is that this video will give you ideas on how to build your own.
The freewheel cranks themselves were purchased from www.thatsdax.com by clicking on the 'Shift Kit' link. On that page there is also a freewheel, but I am instead using the heavy duty one from Sick Bike Parts.

Thanks for yor quick reply. That will help me alot. So if I understand you right, by going to a smaller sprocket I'll gain speed, but lose power for climbing hills. I'm planning on using 24 inch rim & tire combination which would give me more hill climbing power. So how do you think your setup would work with the smaller rim & tire.

This is a good idea. I read the comment that it failed but it just needed some machined blocks maybe from some 6061 aluminum to make it solid. I do have a question being that you seem to be skilled in building motor bikes. Has anyone used at least a #40 - #41 chain n sprockets ? I ask because I'm a good sized feller who is 6ft + and 200+ lbs and have stripped several bike sprockets just by peddling up hill. My goal before spring is to build a 99cc or 212cc predator with maybe a 3 speed drive the way you have done here. I'll belt clutch a step shaft to drive the peddle sprocket but already know that a regular bicycle chain will strip out.
@hutchtransfer
@hutchtransfer 7 жыл бұрын
Yes some aluminum would have been better. Back when I created this video no one had offered chainwheel sets. Now there are some places that sell a double chainring freewheeling crank. Here is one: www.cyclone-tw.com/order-chainwheel.htm If this was available before I definitely would have purchased it instead of making one. I had one of those cheap bolt on motor kits and I did recall using the #40 chain. The chain outlasted the motor! I have not used that for the electric bike.

This is a 2 part question. 1: What size of washer did you use and how thick were they? 2: When you cut off the chain-ring mounting bracket did you have to drill the holes and if so what size of bit did you use?
@hutchtransfer
@hutchtransfer 8 жыл бұрын
+Waterwolf28 I have not had this set up for a few years, so I do not know exact dimensions. The washers I purchased had the same diameter as the holes on the chainring. These washers I picked up from the hardware store and have a uniform thickness. My guess is that they were close to 1mm in thickness. The small black brackets you see in the video were already drilled since they originally fit the chainring and the threading was already in place.

Hey awesome setup, so I understand the crank has a freewheel built in on the right side with all the chain rings so when the motor turns your your pedals stay stationary, so is there a freewheel built in the left side, I got a project right now, i converted a car alternator to brushless motor
@hutchtransfer
@hutchtransfer 7 жыл бұрын
There is no freewheel in the left crank. There is only a freewheel in the cranks connected to the chain. You just need one freewheel on the cranks, and this will allow the motor to spin and keep the pedals stationary. To eliminate drag while pedaling with the motor off, I have also put a freewheel on the motor itself. This will allow the chain to freewheel so I am not spinning the motor as I pedal when the motor is turned off.

you need a jack shaft kit to transfer the drive chain cog to the right hand side of your bike that will then access your existing gears. The pedal works as normal. Pedal for extra power if needed. But will still free wheel as normal. See sickbikeparts for jack shaft kit.

vali4o I took a regular triple crankset and I cut those little black brackets off. You can find a triple crankset that has removable chainrings. The brackets that hold the granny gear are the ones you want. Unfortunately this is not the best design because those black brackets eventually broke under heavy load up a hill. If you view the latest electric bicycle video on my channel I show a different triple chainring that is easier to build and is stronger.

Is it possible to use this combination you made in your eletric bike, but instead of this eletric system i use similar to the sbp shift kit? well, the truth is: i live in Brazil , would be hell of expensive to import the sbp shift kit. (or any other kit of the kind) i have a 2 stroke engine kit on my bike and was planning to make a homemade shift kit, also using this Crank ideas of yours.
@hutchtransfer
@hutchtransfer 9 жыл бұрын
Túlio Santiago In theory it could work, however you would need to know the rpm of the engine shaft. You would need a way to reduce the motor rpm to 100 rpm at the pedals. You would need to modify your crankshaft to accept a gear. This could mean you need to do a couple of reductions. Then you would need to purchase a freewheel and freewheel cranks. I do not recommend using the homemade triple chainring crank I made in the video you watched. The motor would most likely rip this apart. You should watch my other bike videos for updates on the crank system. That could work out better for you.

hutchtransfer Hi yes its best to be cautious at least fill in all the medical details on your iPhone and any hospital locations in the area pre programmed in you sat nav aswell. Just. Because that outer drive sprocket is still powered when you stop pedalling and could possibly wrap your foot around the crank and I like my limbs pointing in the right direction. Maybe you should watch a lathe video as it can just snag your shirt sleeve then twists into a cord then rips your arm from its socket, but here you have the added bonus of you trousers millimetres away from danger. It's not for me I will pass on this one due to sanity prevailing.

Hmmm. . Right at the beginning there when you didn't drill the holes accurately I was disappointed. Surely you could've spent an extra 20mins & a simple home made jig to get them accurate. Even with a hand drill you can drill them small & file to correct them. Anyway keep up the good work.

Unfortunately at the time I built this I did not have the skills necessary to build a jig and do it correctly. However performance was not effected. I did not have any problems with the chain falling off. I actually do not use this particular set up anymore. Check out the latest video for my bicycle on my channel. You will see that I redesigned the freewheel crank.

No updates on my bicycle. This particular homemade freewheeling crank did fail under heavy load up a steep hill. My latest bike video from a few years ago shows how I redesigned the freewheeling system by using triple chainrings from an old bike.

Unfortunately I am no longer using this one and I do not make or sell them. However there are some sites that sell a freewheel crankset with two chainrings. Here is one: www.cyclone-tw.com/order-chainwheel.htm

Hi. Meaning no disrespect, but all of these extra gear ratios are totally unnecessary. You have 8-10 gears on the cassette. With 3 extra sprockets on the chainring, that makes a possible combination of 24-30 gear ratios. With almost any bicycle engine, from the China Girl mid-frame engine to the GP460 or Tanaka 47R engine, 8 gears is more than enough. It'd be like driving a car with 8 forward gears. And YOU want to drive with 24 forward gears? Really? I've run both the 460 and the Tanaka engines for over five years on crowded streets and highways. Guess how many gears these engines like, for street driving? They like FOUR GEARS!!! First gear to crawl on sidewalks at walking speed, third gear at Olympic runner speed, and 5th gear to jump into traffic at 30mph-up. And one thing ALL!! 2-stroke engines like is SUPER LOW GEARING to start off at the bottom of a steep hill or a dirt berm. I run a 10-tooth engine sprocket connected to a 72-tooth chainring sprocket(T8F/smaller chain= 7" chainring sprocket). The engine has a 5:1 reduction tranny, so that's (72/10)X5=36:1 ratio. Then I use a 24-tooth driving chainring and a Shimano 11t-34t 8-speed cassette. So 36:1 x (34/24)=51:1 first gear! That's like having a 123-tooth giant rear wheel sprocket! So as not to bore you with 8 gear ratios, here are the other 4 gears that 2-stroke bicycle engines might like: 3rd gear on the cassette is 34.5:1(like an 83-tooth rear sprocket. 5th gear is 25.5:1(like a 61-tooth rear sprocket. 7th gear is 19.5:1(like a 47-tooth sprocket). If it's flat ground, I might use 8th gear, which is 16.5:1(like a 40-tooth rear sprocket). If I use the first 4 gears in a row, my engine says "Come on! Shift wide-ratio, not close-ratio!"Okay, let's try to figure out what your gear ratios would be like on a bicycle with a China Girl engine. Let's gear it very low on the engine and jackshaft, to give you a fighting chance of attaining ho-hum gearing to absolutely un-usable gear ratios. The China Girl engine has a built-in gear ratio of about 4.15:1. Take a 10-tooth engine sprocket and chain it to a 17-tooth left-side jackshaft. So 4.15 x (17/10)=7.06:1gear ratio. On the right-side of the jackshaft, place a 9-tooth sprocket. Chain it to the 48-tooth chainring. So 7.06 x (48/9)=37.65:1. Connect the 34t rear cassette to the 24-tooth chainring. So 37.65x(34/24)=53.34:1! That's like having a huge 129-tooth rear wheel sprocket. Really low. To be fair, this is even lower than my setup. 8th gear is 17.26:1(like a 42-tooth rear sprocket). A 2-stroker would love this combination.Too low and need more speed? Ok, shift to 36-tooth chainring. First gear is now 35.56:1(like a 86-tooth wheel sprocket and 8th gear is 11.5:1(like a 28-tooth sprocket. Unusable for 2-stroke engines). 7th gear is 13.6(like a 33-tooth in-usable sprocket). 6th gear is 15.69:1(like a 38-tooth rear sprocket).Need high speed? Can your engine pull these high gears or fall flat? Switch to the 42-tooth chainring. First gear is now 30.48:1(like a73-tooth rear sprocket). 8th gear is now 9.86:1(like an un-usable 24-tooth rear sprocket.7th gear is 11.65:1(like an unusable 28-tooth rear sprocket. 6th gear is 13.45:1(like an unusable 32-tooth sprocket).So, with 24 possible gear combinations, which do you choose? If I was FORCED to use multiple chainrings, I'd run the 24-tooth chainring. 8th gear would be 17.26:1, which is fine. However, if my engine had the power to reach 50mph, I'd switch to the 36-tooth chainring. I'd do this for the sole purpose of using 6th gear, which is 13.45:1(like a 32-tooth sprocket. For further comparisons, let's use stats from a gear ratio calculator:to be continued while I retrieve the gear calculator link.....Read more Show less Reply 1 Edit Delete myron yamashita1 second agoOkay, 8th gear at 16.5:1: a China Girl spinning 9,000rpm would reach 42mph. A Tanaka engine at 10,000rpm would hit 47mph. A GP460 engine at 11,000rpm would turn 52mph. So my whole point is that you don't need more than 4 gears.....8 speeds at the most. Choose your sprockets wisely for super low gears on 2-stroke engines. If not, you'll be riding a dog.Read more Show less Reply 1

Yes I realize that some of the middle gears are unnecessary, but I built this with parts I had available at the time. I wanted a granny gear so this motor would do well on hills, however I also wanted larger gears so that it would reach 20 or more on the flats. Therefore the middle gears are not used as often. Plus you realize I have an electric 450W motor and not gas. Because this motor is not that strong, extra gearing is needed for hills. If I had a gas powered kit then I agree that all of my gears would not be necessary.

thats not true, if the big sprocket spun on its own how will power reach the rear wheel? You need an input (big sprocket) and output sprocket which rotates with it to transfer the power to the second chain

Would you be interested in selling one for a reasonable price? I don't need a triple I just need two change rings with a space where the middle one was leaving me with one for my existing chain on the outside that goes to the back derailleur like normal and then another one on the inside for the short chain coming from a DC motor located in the bottom of the triangle for a DIY mid-drive on the cheap not because I'm a cheapskate but because I'm unemployed and this will be my primary mode of transportation for now until I can find a decent job and save up enough money for a car that doesn't force me to deal with ghost pedaling and allows me to Leverage all the benefits of the so I can get the most bang for my buck out of this little Walmart hoverboard motor I have that I am misappropriating specifically for that purpose which as I see it is by far my best option for an affordable conversion of my cruiser hybrid to make it as efficient as possible considering I'll be using old 18650's from obsolete laptop batteries as my power source which leaves a lot to be desired but is barely within my means as it is assuming I can get it done as I simply don't have the materials or tools necessary to fabricate this part
