Yeah this is what I'm looking for. Excellent machine. If you could automate the up down motion of the router you'd be pushing out identical round tenons for chair parts.

Nice one.. Looks like a smooth movement with the bearings. As an possible upgrade, if you'd make the router part stationary and the table part X-Y-Z movable (via rotary handles) it'd make that whole construct more versatile. Just thinking loud; I liked that kind of mechanism on the industrial machines whch I saw in one of my former companies I have worked at.

Hi all I just watched this video and love it. I then did some searching and found this site for all the Linear Rail Bearings and channel. I thought it was very reasonably priced.let me know. I believe Phil did mention 20mm I found 10mm not sure if that will work as well.

Have you seen Matthias Wandel's pantarouter? That's a whole new ballgame compared to single axis setup that you have here. BTW I love the way you used aluminum plate and those linear bearings to assure precision.

Great video. You mentioned you would tell us where to get the parts to build a similar unit. Can you provide us with a link to a supplier of linear bearings, Aluminum Channel, Z axis jacksrew/handle and limiting clamps? This something I will be building in May for another project that I am contemplating.

I actually ordered those parts from Amazon. :) They work great! I cannot remember the specific supplier. I will try and find those records.

amazing job. could you tell us . are you using an spriral bit?? is that upcut or downcut . which one do you recomend can i do it with a nor.mal straight bit? thanks

Cheers! I definitely recommend an upcut spiral bit. I believe it is made by onsrud. It definitely helps with chip evacuation from the mortise.

I am a cabinet maker in SAV GA. I am a small one man shop building mostly kit cabinets and a few tables. I’d like to know more about stroke sanders. I’m trying to save time on the most expensive part of my operation, final sanding. Can a stroke sander get the face frame sanded to a point where it would only take a few minutes to finish?

Honestly, just searched in amazon and a ton of stuff comes up. I forget how long the rods were but I just got two and cut them in half.

Years later, are you still a fan of the Microjig slots for clamping on a mortiser table? Is it better than the conventional overhead clamp?

Don't know if I missed it, but how do you accurately set the X/Y/Z stops? Are you just eyeballing it? How do you mortise directly in the centre of the Z/height?

Many different ways to do it. A lot of times, I will just do one layout and set the bit to the layout and then set the stops. Then from that point it is usually just a centerline that I line up with the center line on the table.

What are the difference between the two tools you created? The other one seems more simple and can use a standard router and don't need a router tied to the tool like this one requires

+Mark Inmon the main difference is the horizontal mortiser can make tenons as well as mortises. The Morley mortiser is a little more limited and only makes mortises.

Excellent video! I really like the approach you took. If I were to build my horizontal mortiser over I would use linear bearings. At the time I couldn't justify the additional cost since I was going for a budget close to zero. ;) Keep up the great work! We share a similar affinity for the matchfit dovetail clamps.

So a panto router is the only one that can round the tenons as well

Hey Phil. I’m having trouble finding the stationary mount that you fixed the router to for the lead screw. Can you point in the right direction or tell me the name of what it’s actually called? I’ve got everything else just can’t get past this one part.

Honestly that was something I just made. You could probably just make one with some old thread and a matching nut embedded in a chunk of wood. I believe the thread I used worked out to be 1/8” per rotation.

+Ross Nanfito I did get the linear bearings and rods from Amazon. If I remember correctly it was 20mm rods and matching guides. I do hope to get around to this but it is going to take a bit of time to do it right. Appreciate it!
