I think if you were to line the shop wall behind the ice maker with a 3/4" sheet of Styrofoam insulation board would keep the radiant heat from warming up your freezer. Put your hand on that wall after the sun hits it. The metal will be hot. I would suggest you cut the sheet about two feet taller and wider than the freezer and mount it to the wall. You would probably save electricity and help the freezer maintain temperature much better during the hot Florida sunshine days. Colder freezer = more ice production. Happy to see you back in the ice business again. I really enjoy your tinkering with this project. It is what brought me to the party. I stayed for the home build.

@@TKCL Most ice machines run the compressor continuously, yours is cycling off from the thermostat. That might be affecting it thawing when it shouldnt

Definitely some interesting results with the various fan setups. From some other videos I’ve seen. To get the crystal clear ice it’s not about agitation of the water while freezing, but slowing down the freezing process. So put a container of water in a cooler and then put the cooler in the freezer will produce clearer ice.

I have chest freezer turned into kegerator,I put a computer fan in 4 inch about 3 ft. tube from top to bottom fan at top blowing up brings cooler air from bottom to top circulating constantly worked great

On the electrical hookup ; the approved method is that your riders lamp cord is the identified neutral wire ! The ice makers cycles are operated by clock timer motors ! There fore only so many cycles per day regardless of the air movement or not ! The number of daily cycles determine the amount of ice ! Add another ice maker and the ice out put will go up !

That;s not entirely true as proven many times throughout this series. The heating and dump cycle is on a motorized timed cycle. What triggers that timed cycle is a temperature reading of 10 degrees or less. So the more often you can get the mold temperatures back down below 10 degrees after heating and filling, the more cycles are triggered in a day increasing your production.

The fans are crucial and make a huge difference because stagnant air has a comically small heat transfer rate. Agitated air has a much greater convection heat transfer rate (in a scale many times greaters). increasing the speed eventually make no difference in production gains vs raising fan power electricity cost. Great DIY.

I have no use for your ice maker design but could not help myself and went down the rabbit hole. I love your videos. Amazon has an under counter thermoelectric water chiller for $129. It is supposed to cool the water twenty degrees below ambient. I am sure this is a low output cooler but it should keep up with the flow for two ice makers. This will probably reduce the cycle time on the ice makers significantly since they have a small surface area for heat exchange.

Suggestions... 1) Put a fan on the cooling pump motor area to increase cooling efficiency there and remove that heat buildup rapidly. Thought is that the cycling cooling fluid will probably be a usedul amount cooler in its cycling. 2) An internal fan needs to draw coldest air from base to optimise cold circulation... perhaps use the directional fan mount to be near base and blow upwards... Perhaps use an air guide / tube duct from freezer base cold pool... guiding air upward to fan intake... and focus outflow over ice freezer units. Lots of fun watching you show really helpful insights. Appreciated.

Last years build I did have 4 inch pipes ran to the bottom with two fans in them blowing cold air up. Production was good, but no dramatic improvement. I also ran a box fan on the compressor area for several days monitoring energy usage. Little to no change there. Thanks for watching

I believe you have plateauing on the ice maker kit and the Chest freezer cooling capacity . Each ice maker are usually rated to 3lbs to 3.5lbs per 24 hours . If the chest freezer has bigger compressor and capable to pull down to lower temperatures. The more ice making capacity you are going to have . That 11-13 pounds of ice a day is pretty good .

@@TKCL on the 3.0 version . You might have to find an Ultra Cold chest freezer . One that can go -10 or -20F . I bet the ice production would jump another notch 😁

An fan on the outside blowing on the compressor/outside of the ice chest with the condenser coil will dramatically help the efficiency of that chest freezer, especially since you have it outside in a very hot shop! To avoid having the fan run all the time you can get one of those power strips designed to turn off all the outlets when the main load turns off - common use is for a TV - when you turn the TV off, it turns off all the accessories. Plug the freezer into the main load socket, plug the fan into the other sockets and the external fan won't run unless the freezer is running. Works a treat! I wouldn't plug the inside fans into this - you want the internal fan to run all the time. Good stuff!

Put a box fan next to the freezer to disperse the heat , the freezer is dependent on exchanging heat and displacement of the heat.

Air mass from the bottom of the freezer should be easy to achieve, build a rack from bakers racks small bread square type. Then build a tunnel for the fans to pull the bottom freezer air, this will also help keep the ice colder, and produce more ice even when full, or until shut off. Also a fan posted insulate the area around the freezer/icemaker but make sure it has plenty of are movement to keep the compressor cool! Nice vids I have bought the cheaper ice makers for my cool tub we use in Florida heat, but they don't last long out side, This is an idea I'm going to research for my out door kitchen! Thanks for the testing and build vids!

Using that flat fan, or 2, and a custom air "tunnel", you could produce, I'm willing to bet, 15-18+ lbs per day ... Just looking at the current ice maker layout and interior shape, I could see a perfect design for the "tunnel" using that 3/8 pvc sheet and wire rack....ideas, ideas, ideas....Using dry ice as my reference, dry ice over whatever is in the cooler makes it a freezer and freezes everything, dry ice under everything is a frig...if you have a small, 1 inch high should be good, area under the ice, the air will be colder than any other area..That's where both the 3/8 sheet and the wire rack both come in, creating that area that would inevitably be under the ice...those big round pipes were too big...

Thank You, Andrew, for producing these very informative videos. You noted that you want to make your system better by recirculating the air inside to help make more new ice. A suggestion here may help, by making an upward channel starting under the ice to pull that colder air up to the fans like a reverse downspout will get exactly the coldest ice possible. I did try that in a older episode, I only seen around a 7-9 percent increase in production, with a loss of storage and room due to the extra materials. Take care and God bless!

Put a padlock on your ice maker ! Somebody is messing with your output ! We had a good neighbor that bought a new car ! He was so excited and talked about the new car and his gas millage tests ! Every night "we" would seek over and top off his gas with our gas can ! He was so excited about his unused of gas millage ! After he took the new car back into the dealer, for an oil change, "we" siphoned out some gas every night ! What a shock ! And what good fun ! He just knew that the service guys took his good gas controls as they changed his oil !

Hi Andrew, Have been enjoying your KZfaq channel for quite a while. I especially enjoy the ice maker builds. I think that velocity of the fan is not as important as volume & turn over. Meaning the more even the temperature is in the freezer the more ice you will produce. The thermal mass will continue to cool all the air as it also is circulating through out the freezer. Also I would use a medium speed and keep the fans at least 3-4” away from the walls to not create air currents bumping into each other.

These freezers are hot on the outside because they must shed the heat they are removing from the inside. Insulation on the hot sides would hurt more than help. The top and bottom could use it though.

Great series Andrew! Love your methodical, data based approach to problem solving! One suggestion, one request: Suggestion: Highway overpasses freeze quickly because they have cool air blowing over the top and bottom. As a result, you may improve ice production if you situate your fan+diffuser in a way that it passes air over the top and bottom of the ice makers (rather than just circulating air in the freezer as you are now). Request: Can you do a quick review of the item you're using to monitor the temp inside the freezer? In one of your earlier videos you mentioned it is monitoring two temperatures and you seem to be able to refer to temperature history with it as well. Interesting device. Wondering where your probes are and how they're connected. Thanks in advance! Keep up the great work Andrew.

That's a Govee thermometer I got off of Amazon. It's meant for reading temp inside the home and has a wireless thermometer for outside. You can connect to it via wifi and pull historical data out of it. It's been working well. It needs lithium batteries for the wireless thermometer in the freezer as the cold kills normal batteries quickly. Thanks for watching!

I've watched you from your 1st ice maker. I love the way you think. I love the way you talk. I'm going to make one. I did wonder if the lid seal is a magnetized seal or just a gravity weight type seal? I've loved all types of testing. I hope I catch your final testing to build what you have proven to be the best & efficient for the money. Very interesting, informative & actually technical. I hope by following your instructions, I can build one so efficient, that all I have to do is change a component or 2 every few years

You could put the ice makers in the bottom and make a cage around them and a vertical conveyor/elevator system to bring the ice to the top and dump it! 😁🤣

Have you considered a ducting system, where a cylinder duct that runs down to the bottom of the chest (maybe on the corner) and the fan pulls the air up from the bottom and pushes it to the top? Kind a like a big straw. Perhaps at the bottom there is a grate that allows melt to drip through, but not the ice, and creates a small void that the "straw" draws coldest air up from the bottom of the chest to the top and the ice mechanism.

If you look at the fan in your freezer by taking the back panel off of the inside it blows on the bottom of the ice maker so I would try putting a fan in the bottom of the freezer a false plate with holes in it so when it's full the cold air will be forced up through the ice to your upper fans that flat fan

A last test I can think of. Bend that deflector in such a way that it directs the air to the bottom. That way you force the cold air from the bottom to disperse over the whole freezer.

Once the bottom starts filling with ice, I think you lose the efficiency of the fan used in that manner..an empty bottom would be perfect..

I know I said it another videos but if you spray foam the rest of that building you'll make even more ice hell you don't even have to do that just put some r board behind that cooler just in that area you'll see a significant difference

Like I mentioned to you before...Make some cubes of ice with plastic margarine tubs or such in the bottom of the freezer, plastic gallon jugs work great. This ice last much longer in your boat cooler. I have used this method many times for longer three day trips.

Put an elbow facing the ice on the inlet side of the fans. Add a 6-in duct facing the ice on the small fan.

Put a piece of PVC pipe in the bottom with an elbow coming all the way up to the top and put a fan in it to suck the cold air out the bottom and circulate it to the top you could even drill holes in the piece in the bottom that way it could sucked up more air

That's exactly what I did in an older build, the pipe was too much in the way and I only seen about a 7% increase in production.

I haven't been able to read all of the comments, but of those I've read, not one mentioned a potential issue. Any fan motor you are running inside the freezer is generating heat that the compressor has to remove. This is very inefficient thermally. A better solution might be to have a fan with a longer shaft. Mount the motor on the exterior and run the shaft to the inside where the fan blade is attached. My apologies if this has already been suggested.

It's been discussed many times, these little 2 watt fans don't generate much heat. The compressor is able to overcome it.

@@TKCL Good to know, but I don't know that it's not significant. These compressors usually consume about 120 watts. If I recall they're about 20% efficient for thermal transfer. That means 24 watts of cooling, so 4 watts is about 1/6 of the cooling capacity. Maybe not a game changer, but not insignificant, either.

What about using 3 inch pvc and some 90s. Start above ice on side wall and run it down across bottom, then back up to the fan.

I didn't realize that your well was drawing Texas water. It has been making my clothes shrink ever since I moved here. I might have suggested pulling out that heat gun once more to give that deflector a 5 degree down tilt to see if that picks up the best of both theories. I'm not suggesting that though, because now you have me curious about those other projects you eluded to. But most importantly... Happy Easter! The cool thing about this? If you use a bigger freezer? You can section off 1 side as a big ice chest and still have plenty of room for food storage.

Try pre charging the water supply within freezer on a coil or plate.. without freezing the water .. let’s go

I did test pre chilled water last year to see if the effort of designing something was worth it. It was at best a 9 percent increase in productivity.

If the water is getting movement/ agitation from the fan it will not freeze as quick moving water don’t like to freeze like perfectly still water

Cool project. As an alternative, you can buy a used side by side fridge, remove the ice tray and racks. The icemaker will fill up the whole fridge. No mods needed.

Or use a regular refrigerator ice maker just as it comes from the manufacturer!

@@SeattlePioneer That is what I have always done. Just dump the ice from the bin into a bag and put in the freezer. It works for me.

What about to take your water line into a another plastic line to send cold air out to the water line coming into the freezer using a fan to send cold air out to cold down the water. Thank you for sharing your amazing journey. God bless you and your family.

What goes out must be replaced, might be a lot of extra load on the cooling system. Thank you for watching! God bless

I am in awe whenever I see people on youtube running outside freezers, refridgerators, fans and outside lights! I live in southern Calif, and SoCal Edison charges $.53 a kwh for electricity during the day. I won't even run the microwave until 9pm. I might have missed it, but I heard you mention a watt meter, but no numbers. Sorry about the rant, but I really enjoyed your ice maker builds, so I subscribed to watch more of your content. I think our Gov Newsom is going to outlaw ice in cold drinks, and limit the temp to 46 degrees, so a solar powered evaporative water supply ice maker might be just the thing for California.

No offense, but I'm in awe at the people that choose to live there, that state makes things extremely difficult for the common person and I wouldn't stand for it. FYI I pay $. 14 a kwh here. Cost of living is far less, but so is income.

If you could come up with a tray to cover the bottom with cone shaped extruded all over with holes on the tips so you could place your fans underneath.

Also would be interesting to somehow set up a go pro camera or similar camera to record the ice production in time lapse from the inside.

That would, but I'd bet it wouldn't stay running with sub freezing temperatures.

Videos where you are experimenting are always great but I think you're right and it's time to move on saving any further icemaker eps for long term experiments (if any) and how long those makers last etc. Looking forward to the other projects you have lined up!

The flat fan runs hotter due to design. The cooler fans suck in unrestricted air flow cooling the motors creating less motor heat.

G'day Andrew, I like the low profile fan & speed control idea but wondering if an improvement could be had by having 1 or 2 of them without deflectors, blowing straight onto the ice-makers. Mount them on the lid with velcro strips so that the distance away from the ice-makers can be tweaked easily for optimal output.

If you want to have fans in the bottom to bring extremely cold air you can do a false mesh bottom to put the fan under it

I wonder how much more production you would have if you took the other two big fans and built them into a fan suit. Your house may have already been done and you could do more fishing with belly flops...😁 God Bless and I hope you get to get out and do more fishing.

A full freezer runs more efficiently. I always put soda bottles filled with water in mine when its not full. I don't know how full yours is getting, but if you can build up some mass with ice blocks you might see some improved efficiency. I wonder if making a lid out of foam board with cut outs for the fan and ice makers would help any?

put a false bottom several inches deep and direct the fan air DOWN through the open chamber with some piping of some sort and back to the ice makers.. no? bring the cold air UP to the ice maker level...

Andrew, very interesting results with the new design. Curious what the results might be if you added a 2nd fan on the opposite corner on the lid? Would be interesting to build a second freezer without modifying the lid. Need to get an FLIR camera and you can detect where the refrigerant lines are in order to avoid piercing them when drilling the holes. Also, I might have missed it, but what was the electrical consumption results for the tests you ran? Curious what your cost per pound of ice worked out to be. Looking forward to your future projects and experiments.

I didn't mention the kwh usage this time and should have. 2-2.5 kwh usage a day for the single fan and 3 kwh per day for the cooler guy fans. Single fan on medium costs me $0.50 to make 20lbs of ice. That's the freezer electrical costs factored in too.

Something to try. Find a way to make a vertical column or duct outta that black plastic stuff. Allow you to mount the fan near the bottom but keeping it outta the ice. The fan can suck the really cold air even when there is a load of ice in the cooler. Of course you’d need to have some of that duct with holes drilled in it at the bottom below the fan to allow it to suck in the air. Might even get it to blow up and right on the ice makers if there is some room back up thereehind the makers to channel the cold air right up the ice.

IHad a thought, where the fan lowers down to inside the freezer, you should put a PVC section of pipe down with a bunch of holes drilled in it towards the bottom, and about halfway up, so the top of the pipe meets with the intake of the fan but it’s pulling cold air from the bottom of the freezer words the coldest, then you can run it at its lowest speed and it’ll likely increase your production

I think at a certain point, you are introducing more heat to the system than the benefit when running that squirrel cage fan so hard. The ice is so much whiter with fans, because the faster water freezes, the less the dissolved gasses can escape as it freezes. You're right that you want to circulate water to get crystal clear ice, but you want to circulate it AND freeze very slowly.
