As part of my physical science class, students are assigned several projects throughout the year. In this case, students are asked to make and present a musical instrument that can play one octave of notes. Students may choose between percussion, woodwinds, stringed instruments or any other method that will make a series of notes.

One thing I noticed: Many students used a major scale in a certain key to make the notes. However, because most songs don't have a melody that falls exactly between a key's root note and the octave above, they had to play their songs using notes that didn't match the scale of the key they played it in.Quite interesting, if you think about it more than you should.

I think I just understood what you're saying... so you're saying that they have sheet music for a song, say in a major, and their instrument is tuned to c major (probably, right?) then when they see a G#, for example, they play a G, and so on... Is that what you meant? If so, it's interesting how many of the melodies are still recognizable...

That's basically what I meant. However, I've spent the better part of an hour writing an explanation before I saw you had revised your comment, and I don't want to delete it. So if you want an in-depth and wordy explanation, click "Read more," even though you seem to get it already. Because the assignment only mandated the eight notes required for one octave (nothing above, nothing below, and no sharp or flat notes), transposing the song isn't always clean. If a song goes below the lowest note of the octave, then you won't be able to use the major scale your instrument is tuned in. In this case, there's no guarantee that the note you need will be there. The main reason it doesn't work well is that the notes of a major scale ("do-re-mi" notation) aren't evenly spaced. A piano keyboard has multiple spots where two white keys are right next to each other. The white keys are the notes in C major. In do-re-mi terms, "mi" and "fa" are next to each other, as well as "ti" and "do," while notes like "do" and "re" have a black key in between. It's not like any black keys are left out: there simply aren't any standard notes that fit in there. The distance between B and C is the same as the distance between C and C# (I mean technically notes get closer together as they get higher but that's just because pitch is logarithmic and yada yada yada.) Because the white keys aren't spaced evenly, you can't play a major scale other than C without using the black keys. Essentially, the assignment only requires the students to make the white keys. Some of the students don't run into a problem, because their song falls within the range of one octave. Other students had songs that didn't fit within their instrument's range, so they'd have to transpose their song so it would. Because the notes didn't line up perfectly, students would use notes slightly higher or lower than the correct one for the song, which is what I had initially commented on.

hey, thanks for taking time to write the wordy explanation, haha. So what you're saying is basically that not all songs could necessarily be transposed to fit into the notes one octave of a major scale, right? like a) songs that are in harmonic minor or some other funky scale, or have key transitions or just have off-scale notes for effect, or b) songs that have notes extending beyond do-ti for major or mi-re for minor

Yep! Circumventing the problem would require adding several more notes, resulting in an instrument that's much more complicated to play, and is probably overkill for a science project on sound and harmonics. One thing I'd like to add is that some non-major scales CAN fit into major scales perfectly. For example, C major and A minor use the exact same notes.

Congrats to you and your students. Here's another idea you might find interesting. Suspend an alu tube "wind chime style" over a container of water. Strike it and lower it partially into the water. The pitch changes... but which way? I started making a water feature with 6 of these suspended over automatic syphons, lovely effect. Never really finished it off...

I can play music using a slushy from sonic. You just blow on the straw and move it up and down to change the frequency/note.

Bruce Yeany Sadly I don't. My old engineering teacher took it to MET with him but I will be going there my junior year of high school. I study at Embry Riddle over the summer. I only have some pictures of it and SolidWorks designs. Once I get it back I will definitely make a video! :)

I think the nodes need to be approximately 22.4% of the total length in from the ends. Or If you have a flat surface and put coarse sand on them while hitting them, the sand will cumulate directly on the nodes.

Have them analyze, conceptualize, experiment & solve a problem with their own hands.Then look at the pride they feel from their own efforts! I agree, I always felt that I got a better understanding from designing and building devices rather than reading or doing simulations. there were many trials that were not successful but even in failure there are lessons to be learned.

hey there i noticed the finger piano (kalimba) at the end , i was thinking about making that instrument for a similar project in my physics class, however what calculations would be needed for finding the correct length of the metal rods for the different notes ?

+Jeslyn Pan HI Jeslyn, It depends. The ones that I showed were open but if you cover the bottom, it will drop the note by one octave. You can try that by simply blowing across a straw or tube, then cover the bottom with you hand and open it again and hear the difference.

+Dolly Bello Hi Dolly, the xylophone in this video was student built and made out of pine. If I were making one, I would try to avoid the softer woods and go with a hard wood.

Hi Cj, we used an online tone generator and matched the tones from the wrenches to the program, it tells you the frequency. There are some that are free, and don't need to be downloaded or you can download one.

On the wooden xylophone does it have a gouges under the pieces of wood and what type of wood is it.

+Iddy Bacchus Hello Iddy, the bars don't have gouges underneath, they were tuned by cutting the length bit by bit until they got the right pitch. This one has the bars made of pine, I think I would prefer using a harder wood and then making the bars thinner to get a better sound

+Iddy Bacchus I think oak would give a sound than pine. Can you have someone cut the oak thinner? I'd try it at one inch, 3/4 of an inch thick and 1/2 inch thick to see which one works best. I'd like to hear what you decide on?

Wade, the width is about 1inch but that measurement doesn't matter. Try cutting one about 10 inches long as a starting point, see what kind of sound you get and see how close it comes to a noted that you wanted, measure it on the tone generator. to get a higher pitch cut very small pieces off the end and check again until you get the note you want. If you figured out what song you are going to perform for class Thursday, adjust the additional blocks for the notes that you need and measure them against the tone generator or another musical instrument.

Hi James, thanks, do you mean introducing myself? I'm sure people get tired of that part but there is a reason. The first couple of videos that I made didn't have my name in the opener or I didn't introduce myself. I soon found that other people had copied them and posted them back on youtube or on other websites without asking or even acknowledging me anywhere for it. If people have my name, it makes it easier to search back for any other videos that I have. In the future, I"ll try to make that part quick and painless. LOL. Bruce

i would have failed them for playing Mary had a Little lamb or that uk song. or if the pitch was clearly out of tune.. hip hop and over singing singers have caused kids to have no idea of what's in and out of tune. an f for water in a glass. or in plastic bottles.. they are too old for that low level effort.
