Homemade Science with Bruce Yeany

Homemade Science with Bruce Yeany

7 жыл бұрын

Updated collection of musical instruments made by mIddle school physical science students as part of our study in sound, waves and energy. In this case, students are asked to make and present a musical instrument that can play 8 notes, it may be one octave but is not required. Students may choose between percussion, woodwinds, stringed instruments or any other method that will make a series of notes.

Ah you made me remember a similar class i had at music school! It was a class where we would make and play our own instruments. I had a small "bombo" and a "sikku"! I had also made a "guitar" with elastic bands and a cardboard box like you show in the video... but that one broke really fast, the elastic bands warped the box and then broke! Still, we had so much fun! Its honestly something everyone has to make once in their life! That trombone and the flutes are super cool! And the wrench-a-bone is so creative haha Thanks for sharing the video!!!

Man, I miss high school. I screwed around all high school, and now that I’m almost 30 I just remember my friend’s dad telling me they’d be the most fun and laid back years of my life. I unfortunately never listened at the time, but I remember him telling me it in hindsight.

Great lesson! My favorite subjects (math / physics / music) all rolled into one project. These middle schoolers are the perfect age to teach IMO. Younger and they're too immature. Older and they're too distracted by boys / girls, cars, sports, partying, whatever. Speaking for myself, my "peak teachablity" was probably ninth grade....

I would have created an electrical piano using an microcontroller. But probably not what is required. I created some of those instruments seen in the video in the past thou. Once, I got a little wood sheet, ~40*~5*~0.6 cm. I put a rubber loop string around it and noticed the pitch changes with the tension of the string on that side. I got a pen and drew lines on every position a finger put on the string produced a note. I still do not know note names but I can hear notes pretty good. I played simple songs with that plank, never learnt playing any instrument or using a guitar before.

What a bunch of great guitars! Excellent works in there!! I was amazed of the trombone! I never saw a scale played on that and didn't know that different notes could be played on the same lenght of the tube! Which, thinking of a trumpet and just three keys... is not hard to realize... but anyway. That was enlightening :D After that I learned that a bottle equals an organ pipe! Excellent! (Where did you borrow that?) Man, that was unexpected! xD Great work, kids!

Dear Mr. Yeany, at 5:04, above the blue poster board/wall, you have a brown thing with various wheels and possibly levers. Can you tell me what this is? Thank you for your time.
@YeanyScience
@YeanyScience 4 жыл бұрын
It is a device that I made for when we discuss mechanical advantage, it has a few gears, a lever, pulley on it. It actually has two small flags ( looks like the one is missing in this video). As I turn the big gear by hand, both flags wave back and forth but at different rates. Without showing the movement I have students figure out which flag waves back and forth faster. I thought I had posted a video on it but I guess not, would you like to either see pictures of it or perhaps a video?

ive come up with a few ideas on how it would work: first, imagine a regular guitar, but with the metal bits (where you put your fingers to change the note) ad the bottom, only 4 are needed (one for each effective finger) and then add a knob just above that one's thumb can press, to dampen/silence the upper half of the string. in the middle of the string is where the third arm ties in, and the operating arm (a piece of wood to which the other end of the lateral string ties) slides up and down along a roughly gourd-shaped body of the guitar. notes are played by strumming the lateral string, and tuned by the angle of contact and the four metal bits. I, however, am not in a position to make such fancy contraptions... so some yarn and a tube should do for now.

sounds like a challenge, if you ever get further on it I'd love to see it, or I'll throw it out to my students and see if anyone would like to give it a try. Thanks

At 2:48 you said "this year", so I guess you assigned this task before. Were there other ideas "outside the box"? The trombone is very unique for example. I thought of a resonant electric circuit that might be another way to build an instrument. What grade are these students in? Really interesting assignment and as always great ideas! Thanks!

I never ceased to be amazed. I've seen a few electrical devices, bagpipes, harps, finger pianos. My favorite pieces was a device similar to a music box, as you rotated a cylinder it had dowels sticking out of it at various positions, they dowels would move small hammers that would drop on tuned pipes and as it turned it played a tune

Not surprised that xsilophone so many yet - is more easy and demonstative as "song is energy", later a going a keyboard (and analog of this - plucked type... wow their does a 2 things) "force and vibration". And if in my music scholl was that lessons - for demonstration of action. Maybe i finished more that 2 of 7 piano class. Thanks for shows it for us.
