Homemade ring roller metal bender

In this video I take a $14 drill vise and turn it into a DIY ring roller metal bender, this homemade tool can be used to roll hoops and rings for various metal projects. I built it for about $40 and it has the ability to bend 1/8” thick flat bar up to 2” wide. I used my lathe and milling machine on this project but it you don’t have those tools I’m sure you can just build most of the rollers out of stacks of bearings. The main reason I built this tool was to make some fire pit grills.

Funny i built basically the same thing a while back but without the extra machining. I unbolted the jaws faces and used angle iron with studs welded to them to mount bearings with heavy tubing around them and a handle. When I'm not using it as a roller the jaws are bolted back on and it's used as a drill press vice. Cost me about $30.

I liked the video and since I have an extra drill vise of this type and quality, I'll probably make a ring/rod roller using yours as a pattern. However, I hope by now you've chained that argon tank to something solid. If it falls and breaks the valve off, you've a compressed gas torpedo instead of a tank of argon. Thanks for taking to effort to post this up!

Heh. This is actually a great idea Mike. I’ve been thinking about building a ring roller. I made plans. I’ve scrapped them. This is so much simpler. Excellent The only thing that would make this more useful is to make a set of rollers with different radius grooves so you can make rings out of round bars, and possibly small diameter tubes. Square radius grooves would let you do it with square stock.

It’s a great welder! I bought it because I wanted to try them out and my local store still had one in stock, I knew it that time they had been discontinued, but I talked with the manager at HF and they assured me that if I needed to warranty it for any reason, I could trade it for a equivalent welder if they sell another Ac tig down the road or just get store credit so I felt fine about buying it with the extended warranty. I hope to post a video about this welder soon. Take care :)

hi mike, great video just thinking if you were to centre mount a single lower wheel, then mount the handle from the rear, your half way to having a diy bead roller, for small tube or sheet metal, maybe a future video idea ?

Mike, Try adding a reversible electric motor to that ring roller with foot pedal controls. Just food for thought.

@@Mikefestiva I did.. You are right up our alley on projects.. But you seem to get more done..lol.. Right now I'm learning remedial stick welding with a nice old idealarc 300 I got for a song.. We also blacksmithing and woodworking. But often feel like daily repairman here on everything endlessly broken.. Was just actually considering trying out one if the hutzl knock off stihl 660's to try some chainsaw milling first.. Not sure you've seen them. Supposedly getting better and better.. Might be worth a try for a little bit of nothing.. Bandsaw is ultimate goal though...

Mike, have you also ran into any lathe, or milling machine snobs yet? If you haven't, I'll give you a heads up...A strange bunch, bursting with ego, that (think) they know everything, and don't actually machine very much. Real machinist's use what they have and get great results.

Haha It seems there’s a lot of those know it all pricks that love to “ Tell you how to really do it” Man I can’t stand those kinds of guys!!! I definitely have dealt with them when it comes to welding videos!

I am trying to roll a barrel hoop, any idea on how to roll it with a pitch/tapper to match the curve of the barrel. I think it is called a conical bend.

did you try rolling at a angle ..instead of going in sq try 22 deg or some deg might do it for you but you might need a wider roller to do that ,,

Thank you for the suggestion. I have looked at cone forming rollers thinking that might work, but in all cases the material starts out with one side longer than the other, a pyramid shape. I understand your theory that the angle of the center roller will give a tighter circle on one side resulting in a cone shape. I tried that with a completed hoop, but resulted in a distorted mess. I will try your suggestion on a straight piece.

That’s a hard question to answer, mainly because I only get a little time here and there to work on these projects, and shooting the video and editing was by far more time and work then it was to plan and build it. Now that I figured out how to build it I bet you could build one in 3 to 4 hours if you had all the stuff on hand. Take care

Theodore Bowers at 5:05 I talk about the bearings and there size. They are 1616-2RS ball bearings 1/2” ID 1 1/8” OD You can find them on EBay or Amazon, I just checked Amazon and you can buy a 10 pack for $16 I hope this helps 👍

Whatever bearing fits the method you employ and the stock you used. Bearings like these small sealed units are ‘parts bin’ components and you can get just about anything whatever size you want it. 25.4mm= ~1” They are used in everything from electric motors, jackshafts, to idler pulleys in vehicles.

Mike can I use 25 75 gas with Tig or do I have to use straight Argon all I have a 25 75 _80 lb tank can I use that for TIG is my question

you need 100% argon

@@theodorebowers9737of course you can use 25% CO2- it will just make a mess, contaminate your tungsten, and make sparks. TiG needs 100% argon or the obsolete special purpose blend with helium. C25 gas is for mig welding

@@alextorres6333I’m curious… Since you will be using this to fabricate things with metal rings, why in the world would you even imagine paying $120/hr shop rate plus shipping to… fabricate something?!! The idea is to diy a light-duty ring roller. You can buy a heavier-duty ring roller from $150 to $450+ and just have one. Or make this for < $50

I really like it, I ran Vulcan side by side with my friends Miller Dynasty and the high frequency start works much better on the Protig then the Miller Haha who would have thought :) haha!

Yes it’s to bad too because it works great! I bought the last one that my local HF store had in stock. I think they will show up from time to time used in there parking lot sales for 40 to 50% off. The day I bought mine there was one for $500 but the only think with the parking lot used tools is you have 5 days to make sure it’s okay, because after 5 days you can’t bring it back and there’s no warranty available on the used ones.
