Homemade Sawdust Fire Starters

More sawdust on your hands than you know what to do with? Today I share an easy and affordable way to turn sawdust and wax it into fire starters for your fire place or campfire. This works with any type of sawdust and creates a long, consistent flame to use to safely build a fire. I like them even more than their more expensive store-bought counterparts at a fraction of the cost! It's one of my favorite hacks.
Materials:
Sawdust

Tools:

Newsworthy information 😊 all this time I've been sitting on saw dust that can make me money. I work for a cabinet company that .throwing this out every day. Who knew.

They’re fantastic. If you know someone who has a wood shop, or if you walk into any location cabinet shop and ask I bet they’d offer you some. If you’re interested in making some it could be an option.

I did this using cedar saw dust and wax. Used cupcake paper to form it. When I tried to light it, it would not light. Can you think of why? I used a match to light it but never would get started. The wax never would start burning. Is a match not hot enough or is cedar not good for this?

Hm. Did you keep the cupcake liner on there with it? That’s the only thing I can think of. It will definitely need that as a wick to get started, but once it gets going cedar burns quite well.

Leave a layer of sawdust on top after the wax hardens so it can light the bottom sawdust that’s covered in wax

Can you use a ferro rod on these? I want them for my survival bag and camping but i like using a ferro rod instead of lighter. I always carry a ferro rod, lighter and matches but when it comes to me making a fire i use the ferro rod first.

I’m not sure, I personally tend to use a lighter so I don’t know if a ferro rod would work or not.

@@MakersWorkshopLLC will do man, im making mine out of egg cartons but they're both cardboard so it shouldnt effect the test much. I think it will work personally because just like people who make these with cotton once you remove a litle bit of wax off the top you should be able to strike it. The saw dust is super dry and lights eaisly by itself so i believe after adding wax you can still strike it with a ferro rod.

@@appalachianoutdoorsman5721 I'd be surprised if that doesn't work. your use is actually a really great application for these because they give a big flame that is nice and slow burning.
