There aren't too many videos about wooden can crushers on KZfaq so I thought I'd make one. I've used this design for 7-8 years now and have never had a problem with it. In fact, it works great! If you want the plans, click here: drive.google.com/file/d/1JXxP.... If for some reason the link doesn't work, send me an email to rpgwoodworking1@gmail.com and I'll get them to you. If you decide to build one as well, send me a picture of your handywork.
Thanks for watching!
Cheers!!

I've never known for sure before, but; now, it's clear. This is my absolute favourite KZfaq video that I've ever seen - and I've seen literally dozens of KZfaq videos - and there will never be another like it. And I must also agree, that's a nice little can crusher. ♥

WOW! thank you! and this is my absolute favorite reply that i've ever received! this can crusher isn't the prettiest but it's not meant to be. it's meant to be functional and strong. this design has been working for me for the last....coming up on 10 years now...and RIDICULOUSLY cheap to build. can't get much better than that i'd say. thanks again! cheers!

Very nice affordable design that many people can make from scrap wood. I always slightly dent the cans myself. Tip: You should drill a couple of vertical holes in the presser block to allow the air to escape from the top of the can. It does make a difference in the ease of crushing a can.

Thanks for the good video and the plans. Very helpful. I made this for our son and it worked great. But, top handle pivot block takes the brunt of the upward force as the lever is pressed downward and it soon split. It was made from pine and was too soft. I recommend increasing the diameter of the through bolt and using hard maple for the pivot block and adding washers on all sides. Also helpful to glue or screw put a piece of hard board at the bottom of the crusher where it meets the top of the can to extend its life.

Liked this video very much but I had seen other videos on can crushing where they recommend crushing the can upside down so the air inside can escape. If I were build one of these, I would drill a hole in the bottom of the base for that purpose and see if it isn't easier; i.e. takes less effort to crush a can.

that is possible. just use the leftover piece from the 1x4 and screw it to the bottom. then you could clamp that to the edge of a kitchen table or something like that.

I'd like to scale this up to where it could crush 1 and 2 liter PETE plastic beverage bottles and gallon plastic milk jugs. Only issue is that the bottom plate would have to be steel, so that the neck of the bottle can poke through enough for the user to put the cap back on (otherwise, the bottle just expands again).

Hi, can I ask you what you would modify to produce a longer stroke to crush very tall cans? I need a means to handle cans up to 20 cm in height. Is it just a matrer of lengthening the linkage, the piston and raising the arm? Sorry to raise this question so late but I need to keep my materials costs very limited right now. Cheers
@RPGWoodworking
@RPGWoodworking 3 жыл бұрын
that's a good question. as it is, it will handle approximately 18cm so i think you can probably just move the handle pivot blocks up about 2.5-3 cm and move the retention block up about the same amount. just play with the design a bit and see what you come up with. i'd really be interested in seeing it! cheers!

When you say 1” by 4” do you really mean 3/4” by 3-1/2” Also the pivot arms say 70 degrees and in your video you say it’s 20 degrees, I’m only asking because I built mine to the exact specs to your drawing and it didn’t really come out right.

yes, 1x4 is widely understood to be 3/4 x 3 1/2. i did say in the video 20 degrees but the plans show 70 degrees. either way, it is a 70 degree angle from zero or a 20 degree angle from 90. i'm sorry if that was unclear.

the beauty of my plans is that there is plenty of extra material so you CAN make the handle longer.
