I made a DIY floating bed with a live edge cedar headboard. The bed is made with a tube steel frame and a removable cedar headboard that has built in shelves. This is the 2nd floating bed I have done and this DIY cedar headboard has live edges and 2 built in shelves.

Great project. My friend made a similar project for his childrens bedroom. He rounded off the front corners of the frame and then padded the entire outer frame covering it with leather so the metal structure wont hurt or cause injuries to the children while playing. Similar to snooker table pockets. Also, he covered the underside of the frame with plywood :)

the gatekeepers you're thinking of make their money from selling their products or providing their service, and therefore they want to keep their ways a secret.. big youtubers usually make more money from their videos than they do from the things they make, and giving more info makes people more interested in watching/learning. If he was planning to make these bed frames to sell as his main/only source of income he definitely wouldn't be on here telling the world every detail of how to di it yourself.

Agree, looks good, only two points to think of: - the corrners, when you will hit these corners you will cry, this is steel, so you may even hurt yourself. Maybe put some covers/bumpers on the corners - have you tested what is happening if someone will stand on the edge of that bed? you should test what will happen if two small kids will be jumping on your bed

Looks nice. But I'd make the frame separable into 2 smaller parts so it could be disassembled to be carried through narrow passages. Also I assume some weaker walls might need some kind of a backplate to hold the bed.
@baronvonlimbourgh1716
@baronvonlimbourgh1716 Жыл бұрын
Seems most of the weight is taken by the feet under it. Only on the far end you get somewhat of a cantelever effect. But that is where your feet are. Unless you start jumping on the edge of the bed it probably will be fine if you use proper screws into the wall and use every available stud to secure it to. 10 big screws into 3 or 4 studs should be able to carry multiple people.

the problem with this bed is that if you add too much weight ur gonna ruin ur entire wall, if someone jumps on that at the outer edge it could rip the wall panels its connected to off. Floating beds look good but these are not for kids or active people, and you need to be careful, if 2-3 ppl sits at the edge ur adding some insane pressure to the wall, and if you ever fall on it or jumps on it like laying down just falling onto it with ur back etc, or for ppl with high weight, this is not gonna be ideal and ur defo just gonna ruin for urself here. so, yeah not really ideal. can just put 2 legs on it at the edge and you would have easy to clean under the bed as well. + you cant move these around if you do changes to ur room that easily.
@gregoryf9299

I feel like most of the comments miss that this bed had support up to its mid-point. Only the furthest half overhangs, so not nearly the stress that many are assuming.
@wdpk837
@wdpk837 Жыл бұрын
the thing I love about this bed is that it truly achieves the floating look. many ‘floating beds’ on KZfaq aren’t able to achieve it because the wood shows way too easily when one steps back even just a foot or so from the bed moving the under-bed supports way toward the center though means that the head of the bed will pop up if you sit on the foot of it, etc. you seem to have figured out a solution for that by mounting the hole thing to the wall. I just wonder if there is a way to achieve all of this without mounting. it seems that if one were to make a cantilever that it would achieve this also while still being free-standing and mobile
@j10001
@j10001 8 ай бұрын
You could mount to the floor instead, even under the floor with welded steel extensions that attach to floor joists
@heavenisalie
@heavenisalie 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe I missed it in the video, but why not mitre or cap at least the visible ends of the steel? You are already bringing for clean up anyways and it would make a much more finished look than the big holes in the end. The mitre would also allow for much nicer/bigger rads or the parts you might hit

I'd add trusses from the middle support up to the two corners farthest from the wall. I feel like the frame would bend if two people sit at the very edge.

Only one person sitting on the bed foot end will bend the frame to garbage.🤣
@BhaaskarDesai
@BhaaskarDesai 2 жыл бұрын
I too had a similar feeling until I actually did see one similar project in person and tried it. It would take two really very heavy people for the steel structure to bend like you say. Also, the project I saw can hold 800 pounds with the steel pipe frame and also had an 'H' shape dual support base as opposed to the one shown above. :) But your idea of trusses is also correct.
@khdownes1
@khdownes1 2 жыл бұрын
It seems like the arrangement of framing here wasn't really thought through; the two middle slats should have continued all the way through to the end of the bed. The way he's made it, you've got them cantilevered out past the leg support, then a cross slat cantilevered out to the side on the frame, then the side frame cantilevered even further to the end of the bed, you're amplifying the deflection SO much more doing it like that (and it shows when he jumps onto the bed). He could also just add two diagonal support beams from the base of the leg out to the corner of the bed, which would be no more visible than the existing legs, and would pretty much make the bed completely rigid and not bouncy

As a total minimalist I would replace the wood headboard with a gloss enamel white board. I don't want to see the headboard so much but I'd want one there for those shallow shelves. To me this would be worth $5000. Of course then I would have to buy a Roomba.

You should get the ryobi handheld band saw. It makes really quick cuts, no sparks, and they’re really clean cuts.

Tip from a keyboard warrior: Mattresses need ventilation, else you create the perfect climate for mold and mites. You should either use real slats or drill holes in the plywood boards.
