Why do squatters have any rights? They should be forced to not only pay for the damages, but to clean up their mess. What is wrong with our legal system where people can just occupy a space they don’t own?

I actually went and toured this home on the open house on January 30. The house was already in pretty rough condition then. When I walked in the realtor told us that she sold the sellers the house 6 years prior but now the house was in the process of being foreclosed on but the bank agreed to an extension if they could sell the house -- and they already received an offer above asking. There were a handful of people there and all were pretty reviled by the condition - carpet stains everywhere, cracked flooring, TONS of stuff EVERYWHERE (like literally clothes and toys all over the floor and outside) and a dumpster was in the driveway that was already nearly full. The backyard was in disrepair and the pool filter didn't work so it was drained, as well as the plaster was delaminated and peeled in several areas. I passed because the house was already way overpriced and wasn't worth the extra 10s of thousands needed in repairs. I'd wager that the sellers didn't have anywhere else to go, they might not have had much equity despite the home nearly doubling in value. Just an overall crappy situation for everyone involved, but these "squatters" definitely had some relation to the sellers - they didn't just show up to a clean house and trash it. Of course all that is missing from the report -- it makes you wonder what other context is missing from the other stories you hear about in the news.

For the high amount they paid for the property, it should never have been bought already occupied. That's a red 🚩 The buyers made a major mistake believing they could bid time with the occupants/squatters to move and it backfired.

Horrible and they will never be held accountable probably

If squaders take over your house, send them a gift card to a buffet with a letter telling them that they won a contest. When they all go out to eat at the buffet, retake possession of the house, and change the locks.

Be grateful that you are in Nevada that has some of the stricter laws and is much easier to evict than many states

That's why you should do a final walkthrough the house before you sign paperwork. If they are not going to give you the keys that day you shouldn't sign anything.

Blame Las Vegas for allowing squatters to do that and who wants to pay $645k for a house these days. Move to the country, buy land and build a home. Squatters won't do none of this in my state cause we have our own ways to deal with trash.

The squatters need to have their parental rights revoked for child abuse, then they need to be forced to work with most of the money going to the homeowners for repair and repayment. Any potential landlord should be able to find them on a list and have the right to refuse to rent to them. After winning in court, they can have assets seized from the squatters, like that truck, and any wages either of them earns.

Landlords need to stop relying on the system. Do your own evictions. 3am…baseball bats…

A squatter with NO money - where did all that furniture come from? Was it furnished when they bought it? There should be laws to cease utilities, no power, no gas, no water. These people are criminals. Why are they protected????

If I knew it was a fake lease -- That's when I'd be moving in too (with a fake roommate lease for me & 5 of my biggest/meanest boys). Shameful that this happens to people who go the legal way for remedy.

The law should be changed. Fake Leases should be voided within one day by court. Period. Raise this to the Nevada law making bodies to make the change in the law. Two months of court hearings is disgusting.

If the previous owner says there is no lease obviously he new buyers don’t have a lease how do you evict someone over a fake lease??? The door would have been busted open

What an absolutely RIDICULOUS, hurtful, time-consuming, insulting, regressive law that owners have to initiate eviction proceeding in this circumstance AND keep the squatters personal possessions for THIRTY DAYS, AND the squatters weren't immediately arrested & charged & pending prosecution?!?!? HOW is this real life in Las Vegas? We're better than this!

Wow... I really feel for these owners that risked everything to buy the house, only to have it ruined by loser jobless squatters. Lets hope the squatters disappear forever and not come back to harrass them.

People who squat in other people's homes should do jail time. If they're homeless then they should go to a homeless shelter. This is stealing and vandalism.

I own two homes: one from my mom which I live in. and another that belonged to my uncle. my uncle's home stays vacant and I want to rent it out for extra income. this situation scares me and discourages me from doing that.

Live just down the street...Thank God that's over! If you don't think one household can't ruin a neighborhood think again! People living down on that end of the block were always stressed out because of the squatters. Now Life can get back to normal.

Why are these squatter rules still legal?! Change The Laws! People have lost everything, including their mental and physical health, to this egregious act. It should not be allowed to stand. This isn’t the old west where you may come along an abandoned cabin and claim it. People have Deeds to their houses! They shouldn’t have to fork out money to lawyers to take them to court over and over again.

it's unfortunate but it happens i'm manager of apts here in los angeles and i have apt full of literal garbage infested tenants have left without paying for 22 months and left everything they ran away

I don't understand how this can be legal. I've seen in other states they have passed squatters laws that can have the people in court and evicted the day after the paperwork is filed. I also think of there is a supposed lease agreement it should have to be proved valid, legal and that the tenants are actually paying the owner in order to even be considered. Include home checks to ensure the home isn't being destroyed. Make the county have to do so much work that they would rather just evict squatters immediately than have to go through all the paperwork, court cases, home checks etc.

Yup there are videos of whole families moving into rentals and homes where people went on vacation and then they can't be removed cause they claim there was a verbal agreement to rent. Takes a year and they trash the place.

Why weren't they arrested and the real estate agent & owner needs to sued too....WOW!

This makes no sense. Squatter’s rights seems like an antiquated practice to me. In these modern times laws need to be written to protect homeowners. It used to be that if you were going out of town you didn’t want people to know because someone might break in and rob you, now they can just still your whole house.

What's wierd about this whole thing is that I know the home owner and and I randomly see this on KZfaq at home in idaho.....

When I sell my house, I will definitely live in it until I know the new owners are taking possession the next day, even if i"m living in a clean completely empty house, using my sleeping bag, and just eating out every day in the last week to keep it clean for the newowners.

These people belong in jail. They vandalized a home $1000s. At the very least its criminal mischief

They are lucky the house wasn't worse. I've seen squatters pour cement down the toilets and drains, rip the cabinets off the walls, take the copper pipes out of the A/C and plumbing to sell.

Absolute nightmare there has to be a better law for us homeowners this doesn't feel right at all.

The buyer should never give extra 7 days to move in. That gave the squatters time to change all door locks and move in.
