I have done about a dozen kitchens and thought I knew at least 80% of stuff, but every time I watch your videos I learn a ton. My main facepalm in this video is that I have always been taking the 4 screws out of the hinges to remove the doors, now I know I just need to loosen the two screws. That alone will save me so much time. Thanks again for another awesome video.

just a tip for the knobs, putting it in the center of the 2 rails actually makes it look off center to the eye. you wanna cheat it up towards the center of the door. stick it on with a piece of tape or sticky tack and have a look before drilling so ur happy with the placement. try a few placements and compare.

I learned you can double check a stud finder with a couple of magnets. You can get a general location with the finder and then find drywall screws/nails with the magnets. Been doing this since I was 15 and I rarely miss a stud 👌🏻

I watch most of jeffs videos and he's by far and away the most knowledgeable and clever mentor for anything renovation diy on KZfaq. My fiance and I just bought an 1890 queen anne house and I already know I'll be listening to Jeff every day while I make some necessary repairs! Side note: if you live anywhere with a habitat for humanity re store, a lot of them have the same stuff he uses in various videos for a fraction of the price. For example, rigid core vinyl plank flooring (usually over 100 bucks per box) is 20 there.

i have had great success mounting a single french cleat to the wall and then individuals on the back of the cabinets. If the cabinets are short enough I even sometimes join two on a cleat. Bit of care when attaching and they just go up level and you can push side to side to centre.

Regarding worrying about hitting electrical, if I have open walls I take pictures before it gets drywalled. Did this with my shower so I could hit studs with my Kerdi board . Also had a tape measure against the studs so I could see the measurements in the future . I know this may not typically be an option, but thought I’d mention it

TLDR: Always pre drill, (it prevents 14:34 where cabinets separate and surface damage) especially for important stuff like cabinets, different pre drilling and countersinks depending on screw type. For the "cabinet" or "pocket" screws with a flat washer head, you can pre drill with a forstner bit: flat bottom hole, and easier to conceal the screw. All you need is the thickness of the head, no more. For the regular countersink screws, pre drill with a countersink, makes them flush without damaging the substrate: We all know how fragile particle board especially melamine or laminate coated is.

Best location for fastening one cabinet to another is directly underneath the hinge mounting plates. If you use shelf location for concealing your screws, adjusting these shelves will expose those screws. Hinges are much more permanent.

Got some of the "topper cabinets" that are 30x12 that usually go over the range for $5 each from my job (Lowe's) on clearance for my garage and installed them super quick. I have a green lazer level i got for $30 onal amazon from a youtuber who posts amazon tool deals with promo codes.. used that level for my height and my stud finder along with my magnet stud finder in conjunction to mark them.. I used a 3ft section of dog eared fence picket as a ledger and man it was a breeze.. I used a few washers on mine for my deck screws as i donr trust MDF to not just rip out . Gave me much needed space and looks pretty good. The nice thing with my lazer level is it has a vertical lazer also so once i found the studs I just positioned the level so the vertical line was inline with them and i still had my horizontal line which worked wonders..

Lots of good tips, screwing the board on top of the cabinet to help with hanging is a tip I learned way too late in my career. It really helps for solo installations. I’m also kind of weird and I prefer doing the bases first. I have one of those big Dewalt toolboxes and it seems to work with my height so that I can stand on it and put one leg on top of my base units and rest the uppers on my knee to help free my hands so I can focus on keeping the gables flush and screwing. Just have to be careful where I am stepping (my raised leg would be on the gables of the base units. Obviously this was a pretty simple example, it can get a lot more complicated with wall-to-wall runs, corners, Gables for appliances, lining up hood fan, fillers, etc. but these are great fundamentals

When I mounted my cabinets I used 3 washers going from smallest to largest because i didnt have a small diameter hole washer with a larger diameter surface, I think it actually benefits me since my deck screws have a bugle shape at the head which would be non existent after using 3 washers. Its kind of ghetto using a small washer then another larger one and larger so that I could build up the surface area but it worked and the cabinets feel pretty damn solid if i say so myself.
