Jeff... I don't know if I messed up or not. I used Mapei Ultraflex 1 to install a mosaic glass tile in the shower... it was a BEAR, but now my brother told me that we used the wrong mortar, and Im freaking out. Will the mortar that we used be ok, or are we in deep poo poo, and need to take it down and start over. Its been drying for about 12 hours. I hope you get this soon.. FREAKING OUT...
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 5 жыл бұрын
Hi rob! the question you need to look at is did you use a waterproofing system. If so then the mortar should be non modified for best results. if the tile is small then you will be o.k. but if not then the mortar will not cure and be dangerous. non modified takes longer to cure and works better on waterproofing systems since the longer the cement stays wet the harder it gets. Modified works the opposite way. it needs to dry in 1 day and cures fast and has an adhesive to help it bond. the longer it stays wet the weaker the bond. Let me know how you fare! Cheers!

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY Yes we did redgard. The mortar we used was Mapei Ultraflex 1 with polymer. It was suggested to us because we used redgard. After 12 hours we cannot move one of the small tiles, so I think we are in the clear.. I actually contacted Mapie to get their advice. Thanks for the very quick response! I know you have a LOT of questions coming at you.

I remember the days before youtube when i was green i had to stand around and learn from the previous generation of craftsman. You were only as good as the person who was teaching you. Now the younger generation can essentially learn from multiple people without taking up their bad habits. Ive been in the construction biz for about 17 years now and am glad that i can see the way other guys do their installs. I'll admit ive learned a few new tricks watching your videos. Keep up the good work!!

There is no doubt KZfaq is of immense help, but a good foundation to some capacity in form of construction including use of tools is helpful... For me, I have been woodworking since about 5th grade. I quickly grew to the type that would not use anyone else's plans so designed my own. It was when I owned my first home that I really understood what woodworking provided me. I started to do some home improvements and realized my skills overlapped, if not just ability, knowledge of tools and construction theory. I can look at something and quickly work in my head how to do it. Prior to KZfaq, I would just visit homes in various stages and learn that way. Another problem is just like the Internet, you have to be able to sift through who is good, vs. others who take shortcuts, teaches poor practice, rigid in specific instruction technique proving to cost you more, or has little knowledge. In short, you can get yourself in trouble be it codes you did not know of, safety issues or just a poorly built system that fails in a short period of time. So, just like anything on the internet, you have to confirm your source. This guy here seems to teach from a common sense perspective giving you good info, while understanding most will have limited skill or knowledge. While I am type A, I certainly have learned some tips and process from him. Type A however means I not just have to agree with theory, or principle, but that it makes sense. I do things differently especially in terms of accuracy or "perfect" layouts and final result. If you are the type to quickly identify what is outrageous or wrong vs. necessary, these videos can be of help. But nothing replaces experience or a good foundation. A tool is a tool, and while you may need to use it a little differently be it speed, type of bit, etc. it does help. If you don't have any experience I reccmend against KZfaq for major things like "a bathroom renovation". Too much can go wrong if you fail to understand it, which can actually decrease the value of your home. At the same time if you really are handy, you can build something better than any contractor for less money than they charge. They need to make money, so there are always shortcuts, not just in materials, but labor quality.

KZfaq has been my best friend. I don't know anyone to show me these trade tips, and it's just me. I had a tradesman insult me and tell me "oh people take a class at home depot and now they know how to do tile" but in reality we need our generation to learn these trades, because most young people won't know how to do anything if we don't learn now.

Tried the keraboard T for the glass. Had to use additive as we are using porcelain tile to finish. The stuff was nothing but sloppy stuff. Frustraiting for sure, but had an emergency plan and had spacers ready to hold between tile spaces for glass mosaic. Hope this junk dries. I am going back to the AllSet thinset for sure.

Five thumbs up! Your videos are FABulous. I'm a 58year old female (with hand arthritis) and I successfully tiled my basement bathroom with your help from this video and others you made. If a tornado comes my way, I'll be sitting in that tub! One thing to note: not all manufacturers have the same spacer sizing, so 1/8" in one brand is not the same as 1/8" in another. Believe me, it makes a difference. Also, that tile slicing thing that I had ($30 from Home Depot) SUCKED. Fortunately, I had a Canadian Tire wet/dry tile saw and that thing saved my butt. Caught a couple of sprays in the face from not putting the guard down, lol. Thank you so much.

Jeff-first, thanks SO MUCH for making these videos! They’re a great help for me as I design my bathroom remodel tiling job. I’ll know what to ask a prospective tiler about his prepping. Looks like the Schluter waterproofing system is an excellent belt-and-suspenders way to go! Second, your remark in this video about putting the glass tile at 5 feet above the tub got me curious about the Golden Ratio and how close it is to that 5-foot mark. Turns out, for an 8-foot ceiling, 5 feet is exactly on the Golden Ratio. As the Australians say, good on you! People will find that ratio especially pleasing and beautiful.

An easy way of getting equally big tiles at both ends is: 1. Measure the width of the wall, ex 2500mm, mark half the distance at 1250mm 2. Do the same with the tile you intend to use, ex 150mm, mark half the distance onto the tile at 75mm 3. Put the tile against the wall, and let the 2 marks line up, hold the tile with the 2 marks lining up and draw a new line on the left side of the tile. This new line will be the ”start”, and voilà! You will now have 2 equally long/big tiles at both ends. Thanks for a great video, keep up the good work! /Robert

Very informational video. We really like the Ardex x5. It's a great 'all around' thin set. We'll even use it as a light weight thin set. Super important, didn't see you doing this: whatever way you directional trowel...when you put the tile on the wall, push it in and wiggle it the opposite way that you troweled...sure fire way to get full coverage! Great video thanks for putting it out there!
@HomeRenoVisionDIY

directional troweling is for large format tile on the floor. Or wet areas. If you place your tile like I do and then push to slide it up and over you will collapse the ridges regardless of which way you trowel. Cheers!

Woah, glad I found this video! I am tiling a tub surround tomorrow with 4x12 subway tiles. Have you ever had a problem with lippage on a tile like a 4x12? The tile I have is a 4x12 ceramic with a slight wavyness to the face and has a little bit of a cup to it. I know you're not supposed to use a 50% offset on a large format tile because it can cause lippage with a cupped tile, but I really do like how it looks.

Thank you Jeff, you’re an incredible teacher and I love watching your videos. I am building a shower with Kerdi board and tray and have a thinset question. I looked up the Kerabond T you used in the video and Mapei says I need to add Keralastic in order to use on glass tile and impervious surfaces. I believe this makes it a modified mortar however. I noticed you just mixed it with water- any thoughts on this? I’ll be using large format 12x24 ceramic tiles for shower walls/floors and over Ditra with a glass tile mosaic around the border similar to what you did. I’ve seen people use Ardex X77, Ardex 7+8 and then there is All Set. Tile store gave me Mapei Ardilex P10 for the glass but it’s modified. So many choices! Thanks again for your help!

Jeff, first just wanted to say how much I appreciate your quality and professionalism in these videos. I've been looking at doing a subway tile for a while now, but there are so many types, styles, quality, and prices. Wanted to know what I should look for in just a basic subway tile and how much it should cost generally (knowing that prices can be different in different areas since I live in the U.S.) Also, are places like Home Depot and Lowes my best bet for that? Thanks for all your doing to educate the previously ignorant, and still at times, DIYers that want to put their backs into it. :)
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 5 жыл бұрын
You are right the prices vary huge for a lot of reasons. if you waterproof your shower and use cement to install tile you can always afford to use ceramic and get a long lasting result since the strength is in the cement. be careful of box store tile it usually comes with a lot of variance in size and creates a lot more work to install. I always buy from the tile store. better product. Cheers!

Great instruction Jeff! Wet tile saw question (that nobody else seems to answer) : If you have to set up your wet tile saw outside during February, when temperatures are sub-zero, how can you prevent the water in your saw from freezing between cuts (or a lunch break). Ice expansion would destroy the water pump and other components. Can alcohol or automotive anti-freeze be added to the slurry water to prevent freezing, or would that destroy pump seals and other components?

Hey Jeff. Really appreciate your videos. Question. How would one tile a wall on an existing cast iron tub that does not have the tile flange sticking up? And keep it dry. Thank you

As an experienced renovator, this guy talks so much sense, is a great teacher and has a great channel, subway tiles are great until you have to regrout down the track, then they are a major pain with all the extra grout lines to remove, would love to buy that laser level, just wondering what other uses it would have apart from bathroom reno's?

Just subscribed to your channel. I followed your drywall series and my walls have turned out great!!!! My question for you is do you always use and angle grinder to cut your tile? What would you recommend to cut subway glass tile for a shower? Cheers.

I wish I had watched this before I tiled my shower lol. So many problems I ran into and took me about a week to complete. On future videos can you show how to tile this same pattern with a mosaic and tile around a window. That's basically what I had to deal with and the results were less than desirable. Love the content and thank you for the detailed info.

Hi Matt, I love to use marble or corian or quartz around the window. much easier to install and leave it extended about a 1/4 inch so it looks awesome with the rest of the shower.

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY This is the answer I have been searching for!! Awesome Jeff! I have a shower just like the one in the video except it has a window on the back wall and i couldnt figure out what to do with it. Think I will use corian. Cheers sir.

Very good instruction! I am about to start my very first tile job. I am putting tile above my one piece tub surround. The surround went in a long time ago and I am just now putting the tile above it. I am wondering if I need to remove all the silicone sealer just at the top edge of the surround before placing my tile on it, or can I just begin tiling on top of the silicone seal?

Hey Jeff, thanks for the video. I noticed that you said you will end up with a full tile at the top and bottom (which is why you cut the mosaic where and how you did), but how, when I measure before I start, so I compensate for the grout spaces? Is it as simple (or maybe tedious) as adding up all those “1/8” spaces and doing the math? Thanks again.

Not trying to be picky but I suggest doing your back wall first to visually hiding grout joints when you walk in ,but credit to him for showing y’all to remove thinset above tiles to help with the ooze that can happen when installing next row . Glad he explained that mosaic row needs to be cured or use rapid set mortar , or u can use scrap tile or wood spacers n finish wall n come back next day n do your border.
