I went to my first homeschool convention last week and in this video I’m giving all the details and my thoughts about it.

Hi. Thank you for sharing your perspective on attending this homeschool convention. I appreciate that, as a whole, as I have never attended one myself, but I'm looking forward to it soon. I also thank you for sharing your perspective regarding diversity. I know, it's not always the most comfortable, to discuss, but it's so helpful to share these perspectives, from your experience. There are many more mom's out there homeschooling there children, and it's great that there are conventions like this, where people can gain insight, materials, and connections.

I love that you included the things you passed on and why. I have always wanted to go to a convention and hold things in my hand but there is nothing around us. I saw that homestead science just a few days ago and it looks good I just wish the website showed more samples. It’s hard to really see how it works and what’s included.

Thank you. I noticed that their website didn’t have picture as well. Bummer. I did find a few photos on Pinterest of some of the activities but that’s all. Not having visuals does make it hard to choose things.

We loved the first book of Apologia's Who Is God book! I bought it used, didn't use any student notebooks, and finished in less than half of the school year. I just love how you can make almost any curriculum work for the needs/wants in your home. Thanks for sharing all your thoughts! I'd love to go to a Teach Them Diligently conference at some point. Might be too overwhelming for me though..

I’m heading to Atlanta in a few weeks and I’m hoping it’s a great representation of all because it does matter to me. I’m a reading tutor and I teach all kids and it’s important for me to be informed and open and up to date on what are best practices, how to individualize and encourage all my learners. And you are just beautiful. I want to see you teach and speak :)

We love Adventures in Odyssey! My husband use to listen to them on road trips (we’re 40😊😊). There are also books! Our 9 and 11 yr old love them! We pulled our 2 oldest from public school 2 years ago, where they were in a Spanish Immersion program. I would love to hear if you like TalkBox. Being that our boys were immersed in Spanish all day for about 4 years and now nothing, I don’t want to lose what they learned. I have to say it was amazing to observe. The teachers were from Spain and Cuba. From Day 1 they only spoke Spanish to the students. My boys understood everything the teachers were saying!!! It’s been 20+ years since momma took Spanish😂. I don’t remember much😊. We Just haven’t found a program we love since being home. Also, we live in a small town in IN, very little diversity. We are a biracial family and it’s very refreshing to find families of all kinds on KZfaq who homeschool like us❤❤

I’ve realized a long time ago, when you’re confident in who you are, you don’t need a place to belong…. You ARE the place! So it doesn’t matter if I’m the only person of color or not. Yes I would like to see other speakers that look like me but I already know if I’m Not welcomed I don’t need to be in that space so I’m not forcing it. I go where I’m welcomed or create my own space

We have a homeschool convention coming up at the end of May and I am very excited. I have never left my kids longer than 24 hours lol. I am so glad you had this wonderful experience with everyone. I love curriculum but I also have a specific list of what I am looking for. I love 1000 hours outside and the bonus that have nature groups all over I can't wait to see her at the convention in May. I love Not consumed. There is definitely a lack of diversity in homeschool speakers and panels. Heritage mom- Amber Oneal Johnston is an amazing speaker if you haven't checked her out yet. She has a book A place to Belong. She has also spoken about not receiving the same welcome from groups and they are often concerned about CRT, 1619 Project or cancel culture. The fact is we live in a multicultural Society so we should homeschool that way.

I’m in Maine where there are very few POC homeschooling. That being said, we had low numbers at our convention because it was “too religious” for most people. Apparently we had too many Christians as speakers.

We lived in Washington, Iowa, and AZ. Only in WA did I know a family of color who homeschooled, and i was the one who convinced them. In Iowa, we were frowned upon. I hope to find some down here. Still, I don't mind spending time with whoever ❤

We used Who is God for just reading and discussion. It’s good but something we have used, left, and came back to. There have been some good discussions but I agree, it’s very structured. I honestly prefer the stuff from Not Consumed for digging in deep for study.

Have you considered doing a session for parents? I am white, and know sometimes I don't really understand other people's perspectives . It would be lovely to learn more and help my kid be more aware of what prejudice is

As a person of color, I don't care if they have people of my color in the convention, first of all I don't go to conventions looking for "diversity" I go there for the wealth of information and curriculum. If a "white" person has worked hard to get where they are to be able to share the knowledge, good for them. Don't take that away from them. This is why things don't get better, people always trying to find fault and racism everywhere. I have actually receive more racism from people of color than whites. If you go out looking for it, you might find it because its already in your head.

Agreed, I go where I want, when I want no matter who’s there. I’m so glad for those of us who are willing to share our positive experiences with hopes that other who are always on the side of skepticism can feel more confident in doing what they love. I pray that all I do and say and those who I encounter show and share Gods love through it all. ❤️

Thanks for this! Your 1000 hours outside unit studies look like physical books, but their website only lists digital downloads. Did you have yours printed and bound?

You’re correct mine are the physical copies that were sold at convention. Currently it looks as though she is only selling the pdf. I’m not sure if and when that will change.

We love Campfire Curriculums and Gather Round for unit studies. Gather Round had everything built in except magh. Campfire has core connections and can be used as an all in one as well (minus math) Rabbit Trails has some books that are not so great. I love the concept but i know don't of the books have racist illustrations or stereotypes 😞

Great video! My boys are in Trail Life and they've learned so much through it. In fact, my 10yr. old gained his CPR certification through it. It is similar to Boys Scouts but more Christian-focused. I haven't gone to conventions in a few years (not including CCs practicum) since the pandemic but i plan to find one virtually. I'm going to check on this one! Also, great points on diversity among homeschoolers...I am myself (and tell my sons too as well) no matter the environment but I do notice sometimes. Cultural diversity is definitely good but gets a bad rap with all of the STUFF that comes along with "diversity" nowadays . Agree all around!

Oh that really good to know about Trail Life! I can share that with friends of mine who have boys. Thank you! Teach Them Diligently also has a convention in Branson and Texas so lots of options. I agree with you on the diversity piece and it being a difficult topic but needed. ❤️ Thanks for watching!

I completely agree with you no one can change the races who attend. Everyone can and should attend as homeschool families coming together to share experiences and be enriched. Prayerfully we are all walking according to God’s will and serving him in all that we think, do, and say. ❤️
