Today I'm taking you on a bookshelf tour--giving you a peek at how I store books and materials that we use in our daily homeschool.
WELCOME //
I'm Rachel, a mom of three and the oldest in a family of 8 kids. I'm a second-generation homeschooler who is passionate about education. I'm originally from Michigan, but am living overseas. My two young boys and teaching homeschool lessons to my youngest sisters keep me busy, but I make time for writing and for making KZfaq videos, too! On this channel, you can expect videos featuring books and homeschool curriculum, homeschool tips for hard days, our journey raising bilingual kids, and vlogs about the intentional adventure that our homeschool lifestyle allows! Subscribe to join our family here:

Expect two videos a week, uploaded at 3:45 p.m. EST on Sundays and Wednesdays.

We don’t have room for all of these bookcases but we have tubs of books and a bookcase in our winding staircase. I love seeing my kids laying by the stair landing with books opened. I have donated books that I will never read again because I didn’t like them. I stopped counting but we have at least 2k books that I have for our homeschool (past and future use). I never thought this would be me but here I am. 😅

Ooh, a winding staircase? I love those. Hey, books are valuable resource for learning for all of our kids...and I have many little sisters and I will someday be able to share these great books with my nephews and nieces, too. :)

Aahhh… been curious about those bookshelves for so long! Thanks for the tour 😊 It makes me want to go out and buy a few more books…but for now I’m just going to go appreciate all the books on our shelves extra 😀. Your organization is aspirational 📚

The best thing we can do when it comes to the books on our shelves is...read them! :P Keeping them organized definitely helps me with knowing how to find any book I want. I can picture which shelf it's on and grab it instantly. Now if a book gets put on the wrong shelf for some reason...that's a whole different story.

I love the idea of putting the homeschool curriculum next to where you homeschool!!! We often put our homeschool suitcases next to where we will when we get to a location!!! It’s awesome that ur younger homeschool kid is starting to learn to read!!! As an adult I found out my older brother was reading eBooks and it was as it was better for beach reason due to the climate!!! Idk how my mum kept my books in good condition especially as we lived on the outskirts of the city close to the outback!!! Our books got red often!!! My notebooks got red from the outback!!!

Yes, keeping books in good condition can definitely be tough depending on the climate and surroundings! Ours get yellow and spots on the pages over time due to humidity.

We read some of you book recommendations: Columbus by DEMI, Benjamin Franklin, and Magellan's World. Your literature picks are excellent. We all especially enjoyed Magellan's World.

Magellan's World is very well done! I've been very happy with the books I've pulled together for our history studies this year.

Thank you! You may have opened my eyes on cube shelving, especially for school materials. It hasn't worked in the past, the way we applied it elsewhere, but hmm. We'll see what works in our next house (and what we can find on someone's curb). 😇 I'm looking forward to moving our monstrous bookshelves out of our living room and into our church library, where I am also Book Warden (Book Mother? Same thing!). :D I totally agree on function being king! I'm like your mom, planning to equip generations of future homeschoolers, but whew, I need to focus on the season of the vocation I'm in right right now!

For me, the cube shelving has been great because so many books are extra-tall and can't fit in regular bookshelves but can fit in these. And I like knowing exactly which cube to head to for a particular book.

Thank you for the realistic book shelf tour! Looks similar to mine. No color coordination whatsoever haha. I get the feeling that some/most of the people on Instagram or wherever that are color coordinating their books on their shelves aren't actual book-loving readers. Looks very staged to me. 📚

I have one friend who does genuinely love books and who does the rainbow bookshelves, so I know it must work for some people...but not for me, ha! Organizing by "purpose" is what is working here.

I always find something super helpful in your videos! This was very helpful! Thanks Rachel! I have a somewhat similar set-up but you've organized yours much better. I use a schoolroom upstairs as well as morning time at the table downstairs so it's pretty spread out and I need duplicates of somethings. Are your pencils and such stored on a cart?
@SevenInAll
@SevenInAll Ай бұрын
Yes, that can definitely add challenge when you have two separate spaces for school and need to have easy access to particular resources in both--hope you keep on refining and figuring out a system that makes it easy for you! And yes, I have the rolling cart on the other side of the table, holding pencils/scissors/gluesticks/crayons, workbooks actively in use and the ones they are allowed to work on independently.

Rachel, could you tell me how you use Fifty Famous Stories Retold? Is it part of a curriculum?

It is scheduled in Gentle + Classical's Sequence 1, reading one story a week, so that is what we have been doing as part of morning time.

@@SevenInAll I always have mixed feelings about having so many books bound in one-- it's hard on the shelf, and hard on my hands to read it! 😅
