Meet my mom, Bonnie: homeschool mom of 25+ years! She homeschooled me and now I'm homeschooling my own kids!
This week we got together and did a Q&A and answered a bunch of questions, from both our points of view. I have had a ton of people ask to view this on KZfaq so here it is, low res and everything because it was made for Facebook, but hey! It's about the message right?
Just a few of the questions we tackled:
Homeschool schedules
Homeschool Organization
Homeschooling when your kids are behind
Our biggest homeschool regrets
What we would change if we could do it again (or what we would tell first time homeschoolers)
How to teach a struggling reader
Our top homeschool tips
AND MORE!
This was so much fun! And now my mom is 12 hours from me once again, but this little golden nugget is just too good not to share!
Want more? Subscribe to my channel or come follow me on my blog or social media channels or podcast (I'm everywhere)! I'd love to meet you!

"It's not what you know; it's about having the ability to find out!" Yesss, Mama!! I say this all the time. I'm a second-gen HS mom too! My mom homeschooled four kids K-12 and I'm so thankful for my education and that I can receive encouragement from her on the rough days. 🤗

Geography wasn't about memorization in my own education. When I think back on my early high school experiences of geography, I think of learning how to read different types of maps, for instance. I have a clear memory of an assignment I did where I had to calculate elevation changes based on a paper map I had been given, and I really found it fun, actually. I spent most of my high school years at a Christian school, and before graduation I was basically homeschooled by a teacher who agreed to teach me grade 12 geography on my own, since he wasn't offering that as an elective class during my last term. That class was life-changing for me. My teacher had me look at complex international problems, and I learned the options that governments, nonprofits, and other international workers have at their disposal for trying to address those problems. For instance, I learned how various global influences impacted famine, and the many tools and strategies that were available to try to address it. I loved my major research project in that class, because it got the wheels turning in my head, and really challenged me to think about problem-solving in a complex way. I loved it so much that I ended up taking geography for quite a few electives when I moved on to university, which further expanded the world of possibilities in my mind. I was interested in a lot of majors, so I didn't end up choosing to major in geography, but it's something I've always looked back on and wished I had focused on more. But I did make geography a significant part of one of my majors, International Development, where I was able to take a deep dive into more of the topics I had studied in high school. My goal was to become a development and relief worker with a Christian nonprofit. I wanted to work in Africa or South America, but I didn't get the chance because I became a caregiver for apparent who became terminally ill, whose disease lasted 13 years. All that to say, geography is not at all about memorizing facts about other countries. Geography is dynamic, fulfilling, and takes a fascinating approach to solving real complex world problems.

It took me 3 years to find you! Thank you for this video. Just was granted the grace by God to homeschool all 4 of my children. They are all Autistic, and I have never been more stressed - or blessed. I have Isabella (14), Joshua(10), Evan(8) and Samantha(3). I have been using a very eclectic methods, not unit studies just yet, but your notes and good natured wisdom had already helped me set some better goals for myself as their Mom and their educator. My lens is so vivid, and I've got no question in my mind or heart that God is at the center of my plan for my beautiful gifts. Thank you again! 💜

This is such an amazing video! I have been feeling burnout and not enjoying myself at all. I feel like I can't find a routine or schedule that works for me and the kids and I've been doing this for 10 years. Feeling discouraged but this is helping encourage me look at the good and to keep going.♥️

I do want to ask a question. I have kids far apart in age. I have a 15, 13, 7 and 3 year old. My 3 year old is so, so, SO busy! What sort of a routine would you suggest? This year to survive the school year I had him watch either leap frog or veggie tales when I had to sit down with one of the kids. This coming year, we plan to have our oldest do mornings at a local school (he's a percussionist) and afternoons at a local technical school for homeschooling. (Motivating him was a killer.) Anyhow, with the others, I could use some suggestions for next year on a good routine.

Really enjoyed your video. I don’t have parents to fall on for support or to have a shoulder to cry on when the hard days come. So I truly love hearing older woman who have homeschooled their children. I have a few questions as I am watching this video. 1) Why did you only homeschool until the 10th grade, Rebecca? 2) Rebecca, do your siblings homeschool their children if they have any? 3) When short on money do you still feel like spending all the money to attend a homeschool convention (registration fees, transportation and hotel fees, etc.) is worth it when about to start homeschooling the high school years? Or do you recommend saving the money on curriculum instead?

LOVED this. Thank you so much! It gave me confirmation for so many things. And the the thing your mom said about having that confidence---I had that too, and it's definitely from God. But then after about 5 years of homeschooling I started to question my abilities and thought that my confidence was quite naive and almost foolish, lol! Except now I see that it was not foolish--it was from God because He knows the end from the beginning and that my kids will be fine. God bless you both ❤

Was there any concerns from either you or your mother when you stopped home education and went to school? My biggest fear I think is that my daughter (who wants to homeschool and is 7) is going to want to go back to school at some point and not be at the same level as her peers, that will be either behind or ahead and she won’t have her friends with her anymore. I’m worried that it will add to her anxiety (gee I wonder where she gets that from??)

At 5 years old don’t worry too much about reading. Hook him up with a Starfall account! My little guy got through letter recognition and letter sounds and then refused formal lessons. He wanted me to back off and let him figure some things out! He started asking what certain words were, how to spell things he was typing into a search on google or KZfaq (supervised) and by 6 1/2 he was reading on his own! Some kids just need some wiggle room. The classical method and the Charlotte mason method don’t even recommend formal lessons until 6 years old or older! One thing we did was buy A Year Of Playing Skillfully and do some of the activities together when we could, or have one of the older kids do it with the littles. It has lots of sensory activities and fine/gross motor skills activities. Play is much more important to development at that age than academics anyway!
