Hey Tiffany! I’m a teacher and I think the best way to get the kids into a groove would be to make a schedule for them. Block out time for different academics. Also make blocks in between the academics for lunch and a recess or break time. This would break it up and make it not seem as daunting. As an incentive, you might could block off half a day for a “break day” as a reward. I hope this helps. ☺️

I had to homeschool my foster daughters age 14, 12 & 6 for a while. One thing I changed right away was the lounging in PJs. When they did that, their minds didn’t seem to turn on for a long time. But when we got that rush of adrenaline of getting ready for school as if they were leaving their minds were alert when they hit the computer. I tried to mirror school schedule as much as possible even with recess & lunch so that the only thing that changed was the environment and the people in it. I’m glad I did that because it made for a very easy transition back to school:) Best of luck to you while home schooling. It’s a whole new full time job to add to your day:/

A separate room for study would be a good idea. That way the kids will associate their bedrooms for relaxation and fun, but the study room will be associated with studying. It’s important to have designated spaces. I hope that helps! 💕

being a teenager, I love your idea of prizes! Keep that idea and your idea of checking on them every 45 minutes! Keep them out of their rooms, their rooms set a mindset where they just want to have fun and relax. I also saw someone else’s idea of block scheduling it and making that a schedule which is great! keeps them from getting overwhelmed and distracted because they can get a break in between classes, have lunch, etc!

I think homeschooling works so much better when the kids still get up and get ready along with the other kids. This means they are ready to go for the day and is a good way to show them the day had begun and it’s time to work. Scheduled breaks or break targets is also good e.g. if they finish something they can then take a break and so on

I suggest designating an area or room in the house for homeschooling. This arrangement will create an atmosphere of formality and bring the kids into a learning mindset; they need to know they are on the clock (not on their own time). Successful homeschooling is contingent on the students developing self discipline, which would be difficult if left unsupervised in their bedrooms.

I love how supportive you are. Grace is a wonderful thing for everyone, including Mom! Also, what you're doing, while yes, the kids are learning at home, is technically "public schooling at home," which is BY FAR the hardest form of "homeschooling." I'm not knocking it, because each family needs to do what is best for them. But true homeschooling according to the legal definition in Utah, where you fill out an affidavit and turn it in to your district and you take full responsibility for your kids' education, and no one is putting their agenda in place, is a lot easier, in my experience. Every homeschool family has a different opinion about the matter, but that's mine. So I have mad respect for you doing it the way you are.

And PressLee has a personal reason for being homeschooled, and it’s not nice to say that she wants to be like PaisLee. You heard PressLee in the video she has a personal reason to be homeschooled and in the video she said she does not want to tell us and that’s fine just don’t assume it’s very disrespectful that goes out to everyone not just the person who wrote it.

I was homeschooled all my life until grades 11 - 12 and it was the best experience for me! I loved the flexibility and the freedom it gave me to have life experiences outside of school. Since I received a weeks worth of work at a time, I definitely found that focusing on one or two subjects a day helped to motivate me to finish all the work for those subjects for that week. Once I'd done that - it gave me freedom to do whatever else I wanted throughout the day. I would also finish all my hard subjects first - like Math and English, and leave the fun subjects last so when I was least motivated in the week, I'd have work that I enjoyed to do. Also remember that transitioning to homeschooling can be hard sometimes, give yourself time and space to adjust and work out what works best for you. Love you guys ❤

Having an general schedule that is consistent (but at the same time flexible) is an absolute necessity. For older kids Having a planner to sit down and write out what you need to do the morning of or night before is really helpful. We also don't let our kids have access to screens until work is completed. Otherwise they never do their work.

I am so happy that families like Nen fam exist! You guys are really great! As a homeschooler of 8 years I have a few tips that have worked for me: 1. Find your routine! Some kids work differently (I personally work better in the morning) so try different routines and do what works for you! 2. I would recommend, Tiffany, that if you give the kids a list of ‘independent’ work that they can do while you are on walks, chores, or any other work that might help them get a better start to the day. 3. A way to get the kids to change up things is taking them to museums, science centers, art museums, festivals, or anything hands-on like once a week or once every other week. This allows them to get out of the house while also learning. More for the kids, I would use study trackers (I use study bunny) that gives you small rewards and give yourself some small rewards after you complete a bit of work (but of course whatever works for you). Good Luck!!! -A Big Nen Fam Fan

Edit: clearly I should have watched the whole video as you mention most of these 😂 Hey! So, I have my degree in elementary Ed, and I’m actually pursuing being a tutor for homeschool kids (as well as teaching my own children if we are blessed with them.) Here are my two cents. 1. Routine Routine Routine. Pick a certain time when they start their work every single morning. This tends to ease the stress around starting to work/motivation. Maybe even incorporating a schedule just for their homeschooling. 2. Reach out to local homeschool moms. There is no shame in asking for help if your kids need it! I know when mine get older they may need outside help with math😅. There are lots of tutors that can come and help with difficult subjects. And the homeschool moms in your area would know who to call. 3. Patience and Grace. This isn’t going to work right away, and that’s fine. You gotta find your home’s rhythm and how you guys operate. Praying for the best for y’all! Homeschooling can be super rewarding!

I do homeschool right now and I do my school work in the morning and take occasional breaks so I don’t get bored and restless. I put away all distractions and I always have water and gum next to me. When I am done doing my work I put my stuff away and rest my brain. One tip I have is to have your work space plus your room clean because I myself find it overwhelming to have a messy workspace. Another thing is that you’ll find your flow. For me it took 3 months to find my schedule. Just take your time and and try different schedules and methods 😊

Some people are writing mean stuff and saying that prizes is not the best way to do homeschooling and saying that PressLee just wants to do what PaisLee is doing. I think Tiffany is an amazing mother and if she wants to give out prizes that’s her idea and I agree that she should give out prizes . Respect her decision don’t tell her what to do it’s disrespectful and the mean comments is just rude. I am not mad I am just saying to stop writing some mean comments.

A good incentive for the older kids might be a European summer course like Shakespeare in England, A Chinese summer camp, a month in Spain etc. Good for the older kids and it helps them leave the nest when its time for college, though your kids seem pretty independent and there are no cling-ons in your household by the look of it.

Hey Tiffany, I know there was drama with kassidy, but I don’t think kicking her out of the trip was the best idea. Because if you watch kass’s video about taking her sisters to the mall you will see that the girls pranked her by ‘losing kass’s credit card’. And you will also see that some of the girls kept on asking for things even though kass didn’t have her card. Some of them were being very spoiled even though kass always buys them everything they want. So, maybe you should let kass go to Palm Springs because she was just trying to do something nice for the girls, but they didn’t appreciate it. Good luck on the trip and safe travels ❤️

I think its better to allocated one room as a school room, where all three of them studies there and can fully concentrate. Your bedroom is like a comfort zone, so it’s better to not mixed it up with work/school related. It gives space for your mind and body to relax too if you don’t mix it up. They can each have their own zone/ corner in that schoolroom. Plus, its better for you too, logistic wise. For scheduling, each person can have their own schedules and you can make a whiteboard of it like for example; PaisLee Monday 9-10am - Chinese 10-11am - Maths 11am - 12pm - History And when they’re done or completed their work put a marking on it PaisLee Monday 9-10am - Chinese 10-11am - Maths ✅ 11am - 12pm - History Then you can monitor them just by the markings, the subjects that has less markings cld be an indication that they need to put more effort on it. Plus, I don’t think you need to give them a reward every month or every week, I think they need to do it because its a necessary activity they need to do. Giving too many rewards could spark some unnecessary confusion to children their age & it could spark your traditional school children to wanting/considering homeschooling as well. Hope for the best for the Nelsons 🎉 I always love watching your family grow ❤️

I havent watched the whole Video yet, but Tiffany you are amazing! And kiddo's your Mom is taking a ton of responsibility on extra to keep you, feeling safe, happy, and out of main stream. Help her out be doing your part and what is every kids single responsibility to school. Participate, do your assignments and take your on line lessons seriously. Not every Mom would or is able to help their children this way. Maybe putting up the phone and only having restricted to school online classes during the Homeschool Day is how you all can help Mom make you successful in this Homeschooling period. God Bless Tiffany and Benji ❤

Maybe it’s just me but giving your children prizes for doing school work gives them the impression that they’re doing school because there’s a prize at the end. The other children don’t get prizes simply for going to school and in the long run it may damage their attitude towards education. Giving them a proper desk to work and fixed hours, making it more like a school day may make things easier to tackle and mean you don’t need to be so vigilant over them all. I hope you work out a solution that works for you soon though❤

Maybe not the younger children but she said that the high school students got prizes. We do similar with my son. If he will maintain his good grades etc. we draw up a little contract that if he gives it his all then and maintains the criteria in the contract that he can choose from like 3 different options. Plenty of parents give money for good grades, chores, etc. In a way schools offer rewards/incentives as well. You could say that kids shouldn't be rewarded for chores either becuase they need to learn to clean thier own messes, rooms, and help with other things in the house. If an incentive helps to motivate a child in this day and age and to make learning more fun for them maybe especially if kids are struggling for whatever reason, we all know times are changing and I think that school and learning is harder now for kids than ever with all that is going on in our world today. Kids need more encouragement, caring and grace at times. It's ok. The rewards they may receive at home may be all that is recognized all year long for them. How many parents get upset at awards days at school because so many kids will never receive an award based on what schools think should receive awards.

@@abbyvinson93 I don't argue whose money it is or how much. i was just stating I didn't think that it was bad or wrong to reward kids for doing well in or with school. Whatever it might be that's offered. It sounded to me like they thought it was buying the kids off to do something they should do regardless. That's why I said what I did about awards and rewards that shcools offer. It's all a form of wanting or trying to encourage. Whehter it be monetary or otherwise.

Just curious on the thought behind incentives for doing school work? Just with my upbringing things like school were not an option to be flexible. Also curious on how the kids that go to school would feel about not getting an incentive for going to actual school but the children at home do.

Have Preslee use a body double for cleaning! The struggle is maintaining, not the initial clean. She may have some undiagnosed ADHD. Not trying to diagnose, but there may be some things lurking within! I resonate a lot with her and my diagnosis was rough to get!

@@jessicamaria1107 yep! Now I’m 24, heavily struggled in school and always had a “bomb” of a room. A tick in the attic. Everything. But when I did clean, the small part I did was immaculate. just couldn’t remain focused to do the entire thing. Now, diagnosed. I’m pretty steady all around! Work a corporate job, have a salary, my own insurance. It’s neat how much learning and routine change is necessary in a world meant for neurotypical people, which ADHD friends are NOT. you have to learn how to live in the proper world for you! :)
