Having an accelerated learner can be both a blessing and a challenge. It is certainly an adventure. In this video I discuss 5 things that have come up over the years that you may experience as a homeschooler with a child that excels academically.

Ugh the last part. My daughter turned 8 a week ago and is reading at a middle school level. Not only that but less than a year ago she was just at a year ahead in reading, so 2nd grade level. She jumped about 4 years in about 10 months. Her math skills were always years ahead but she hated reading. And then all of a sudden just fell in love with it and blossomed. My friends with same age kiddos are posting pictures of their same age kiddos starting to independently read and are celebrating it, but if I post a video of my kiddo reading middle school books it's frowned upon.

I say celebrate 🎉 If it bothers people, that’s on them. It’s not a comparison game, it’s just celebrating a child’s individual success and progress.

I am so glad I found this resouce. I have a gifted little boy. He is 4 about to turn 5. I have no homeschooling friends or family... i chose to school him at home because of his early advancements and then the pandemic hit which kept us going. He is doing 1st grade math, so a year ahead exactly and has a reading level at 1st almost 2nd grade. The biggest struggle I have found is finding curriculum that teaches at the higher level in a way that keeps his attention and lets him play/manipulate/practice in a way that is appropriate for his younger attention span and maturity. We just had to switch math because the way it was taught, he would have to sit still for the lesson and those lessons could be up to 20-30 minutes ... and we just couldn't do that. Plus, the worksheets/practice while colorful were longer than he could do at one time. All of that to say, we just switched to TGTB which I hope will work with shorter lessons and just keeping him a grade ahead. We will supplement with harder/more "normal" 1st-2nd grade math but that won't be our focus anymore. I just wanted to point out how the struggle for finding curriculum and remembering they are just kids can mix. The harder curriculum may be taught or approached in a way that may not align with their maturity/attention spans at a younger age.

Absolutely! That is an excellent point. It can be tricky to keep it fun and find a curriculum that works for our kids’ academic needs.

I really love your chatty videos, but lately I’ve had a hard time listening because the background music seems almost as loud as you. Maybe it’s because I listen on headphones, not sure. Just a comment on my experience. Love your videos/content!

Thank you so much for the feedback! I’ve been struggling with the music when editing. I turn it down so low when editing, that I almost can’t hear it and then when it publishes it’s too loud 😬… definitely something I am trying to get a better hold on!

Just found your channel so I know this is an old video. One thing you didn't mention that I have dealt with was when the child has both developmental disabilities and is an accelerated learner people struggle with having what they see as a dichotomy in one child. Or if they accept it they want to view them as fictional characters like "Sheldon Cooper from Big Bang Theory". Sometimes my kid struggles and excels in the same subject - reading ability high, while comprehension is low-average for example. So taking accelerated learners at their ability not just to assign a grade but between subjects and even within subjects accepting that they can be both gifted and struggle and constantly meeting them where they are at is essential

This was super helpful to me. I have a 5 yo who wants to learn all the things and is doing work with his 3rd grade sister. And no pushing from me. It is all what he wants to learn and he is reading chapter books, but I don't want to give him books that are too mature for him even though he can pretty much read whatever.

That’s awesome! He is so lucky to have you there to help him fly. It can definitely be tricky to find content that is both challenging and appropriate when we have an early reader!!

I can relate to all of this. All 3 of my kids are gifted in one area or another, especially my oldest who is 2e autistic. I have felt the same weirdness with other parents sharing where my kids are academically. I'm not a crazy tiger mom, my kids are leading their own pursuits and I'm just trying to keep up. That is the reason we chose to homeschool in the first place...to meet my kids where they're at.

Wow this was great!! And thank you for talking about the difficulties of figuring out high school and college at younger ages! I always hear of peoples kids who finish college at whatever extremely young age and am like, HOW? How did they get in? How did all of it work!! So figure it out and let us know! LOL! My daughter just turned 6 yesterday, she is doing solid 4th grade math (halfway through Saxon 54) and reading How To Train Your Dragon, cause she’s into dragons. It is so hard to find books that she likes, that aren’t too mature in content. I moved her way back in Lightning Literature, I wanted to start her in 4th grade, but the books that accompany it are too mature for her. Even the 3rd grade books are a little tricky. So I’m going to let her work through 2nd grade as fast as she wants, so she at least get exposed to the picture books that she loves so much before she moves to the heavier topics. Thank you for making these videos and for highlighting the struggles of having accelerated learners, your description of friend reactions was spot on, I’ve had so many backwards comments from people that really hurt because I’m not doing anything but following her lead, yet people act like I’m beating my kids to make them learn. It’s insanely frustrating. So thanks for not making me feel like the crazy mom that everyone seems to think I am. Your videos are wonderful!!

Yes! Finding content that is challenging without being to mature can be a challenge. To a degree I’ve had to make peace with the Prisoner reading some materials that I would not recommend to her same age peers. I try and look at it as an opportunity for discussion whenever possible. At the same time, I think it’s important to sometimes “take it easy” academically for the sake of where she’s at emotionally and her maturity level. Thank you for your comment. It’s great to connect with other mom’s that have some shared experiences 💕

I am homeschooling 3 gifted learners, ages 14, 11, and 8. The 14 year old recently earned a perfect score on the verbal SSAT (the SATs for admission into high school, geared towards students 8th-12th grades), and an overall 95%. The 11 year old taught himself to code all on his own. The 8 year old writes her own novels. My solution to keeping their little brains busy is to broaden horizons rather than to move ahead too far. For example, they are all studying foreign languages. The 14 year old is doing a Coursera class on political theory for college students. The 11 year old is studying logic and economics. The 8 year old does science every day (her favorite). This approach has worked for us so that the kids get to explore their interests and stay occupied without just piling on quantity of work. If that makes sense. I agree that gifted learners are a challenge! Hang in there, mom!

Excellent advice! Broadening their experiences is such a fabulous way to meet the needs of an accelerated learner💕

Thank you so much for this video! I was just talking about how I am going to navigate homeschool curriculum with my 11yr old. My child is on the same timeframe as yours. My child will still be 11 when we transition to high school work. I’m wondering if it is ok to move forward at this pace? My concerns are being so limited to resources because of age. Also, the idea of going back to PS and then having to start over. This video was so relatable. This is our 1st year homeschooling and my child is flying through curriculum. I’ve tried the “advanced” curriculums and find we are just moving through them quickly. I hope this isn’t a silly question, but is it ok to move forward so fast? ☺️

In my opinion… the speed that a child progresses is dependent entirely on that child and what works best for your family. There’s no one “rate of acceleration” that is going to be suitable for all children. In our situation, we are stepping back from more structured curriculum and the Prisoner is getting to choose what she’s learning and how fast she moves through it. Because she’s advanced academically, I don’t have to be concerned with our pace (as is MY bad habit). Ironically- this increased freedom has resulted in her learning more rapidly because she is invested and interested in the materials. Long answer short: YES, I think it’s ok to move forward fast when it fits the needs of the child.
