Summer Rayne Oakes moved to New York City as a model, not expecting it to be permanent, but 15 years and over 1,100 plants later, she's created an urban forest in the Brooklyn apartment she calls home.
“Growing up in the country, close to nature and my mother's collection of National Geographic magazines, I had never imagined myself living in the city for so long… I think a lot of people are like me-rural transplants in an urban environment, seeking a way to live more sustainably and in sync with nature. Even for those of us who have never stepped barefoot on a blade of grass, there's something inherently in us that is connected to nature-on a much deeper, biological level.”

Whether growing plants and caring for them full time is your thing or not, whether anybody’s obsession is your thing or not, just watching someone talk about their true calling in life is such a beautiful experience. Their passion for it, the peace they’ve achieved realizing it and the way it lights up their being is so attractive.

Just another beautiful treasure in Brooklyn that makes it impossible to call any other place home. What a glorious video! The love that she has for her plants and critters is not something that everyone will understand. I do. Being a cat lady is often misunderstood, but the world needs more caretakers of sentient beings now more than ever before! Brava... 🌺💚💗

As a child, my favorite 'trip' was to visit the university greenhouse. The moment I entered, the smell was wonderfully overwhelming as growing things have a marvelous odor (like rain and cut grass) and wrap you in that world. I think her home is a dream world that very few people are able to live in. Bravo to someone that had choices, and went with what made a real home for herself.

Needless to say, I love all her plants, but that lime green paint color in her kitchen is one of the best features, that old sink is fabulous and those plants are amazing. I love the way she sits on that cute chair and looks out the window while drinking her tea, looking at those amazing little birds doing what they do. I hope she never ever moves out of her apt. When I first saw the apt. in the video I thought “well, a little nuts” but after watching the whole thing I’m thinking “focused, obsessive, but not nuts.” She’s so smart, really interesting to hear, the lengthy just video flew by. I had so many questions at the end about practicalities like watering without damaging walls/floors/furnishings, how the landlord felt about the bugs and of course the time it took to take care of them all. My own esthetic is 180 degrees different from her’s, but I enjoyed spending time with this intelligent young woman. Also, I now feel a wee bit better about my own collections...

My husband and daughter began planting, Milk Weed plants in our backyard and now it’s a Monarch Paradise. It wasn’t automatic though, my daughter would manually kill bugs that wanted to either eat the newly eggs or eat the leaves, this Spring we’re struggling with flies that are parasites to the caterpillars. But we’re still working at keeping the whole process going. Thank you for your gentle touch, you have what nature needs and for your hard work. Bravo for your beautiful and gentle strength to keep your dreams going.

This is VERY impressive, I must say! I wish I had a situation where I could do this kind of thing. I tried growing plants on my patio , but ran into so much opposition from the management and the yuppies in the complex that I finally gave up. The yuppies were all control freaks, formerly from gated communities and homeowners' associations, and couldn't live without trying to control others. The patio growers in my building were originally six, then four, then two, then one, then none. It's sad, because the place is such a yuppie wasteland. All the shrubbery and most of the trees have been cut out. There isn't a blade of grass that would DARE be out of place. Control freaks are such pathetic creatures--no matter what they're trying to control others about.

This video soooooo much makes me miss an apartment I had in Vancouver, BC. I was on my way to this kind of setup with plants as well as aquariums in the living room. The living room was a corner of the 2 storey building, my apartment was on the South East corner so I had sun most of the day coming in the windows which were south and east facing. I found Cherry Tree branches that had been trimmed off of a tree and suspended them off of the ceiling in a way that they looked like they had grown and had vining plants creeping across them and were very effectively were my living room curtains. I was able to see out but no one could see in, they could just see my 'strange green curtains', as one person commented once. I had a rebuilt, for indoor use, a wooden plant box under the east facing window with tropical ground plants and small trees growing in it, and the south window/wall had a number of glazed clay pots with plants of all kinds growing in them. there were 6 aquariums, the smallest being 60 Gallons and the biggest 280 Gallons with tropical fish of many species. I had a virtual rain forest in my living room and dining room which were connected. My own little sanctuary! I plan to do the same thing again in the future when I have my own home and won't have to move again. Hopefully on a homestead of our own, and then gardening will be a key part of homelife. Thanks Kirsten for bringing back such great memories, Peace, Happiness, Love and Laughter, Keep Safe All, -Matt

I love your plants story. Last year during Covid I begun to grow carrots, peppers, tomatoes, and áloe in my tiny kitchen, I ended-up having so much flies in there and all over my apartment. The rewardingly parts was that I enjoyed the fruits of my tiny labor. However, I took the rest of all those plants to the front of the exterior temporary garden. Last week, I obtain your book and I’m slowly learning to talk plants jargon. It’s making me feel so good emotionally because I was raised in a house with a very large backyard with multiple plants and animal until I was ten year olds. But, I’ve been living in NYC practically all my life and watching your channel has inspired me to be plants parent for the rest of my life and to continue to be proactive. By the way, your apartment is like a beautiful jungle where I would feel very, very confortable. ( please note that it’s not envíe but admiration that I have for you.) I’m unable to live in a house but I live in my NYC apartment which is my home. Your space is calming! God bless you and thank you Ms. Oakes.🙏

I love that she has nurtured and lived with so many plants but personally, I won't be able to deal with all the bugs and creepy crawlies. I've got 3 big (mid-sized) plants in my apartment and I have more than enough trouble dealing with bugs. Kudos to her though.

Thank you for this beautiful snapshot of Summer Rayne, her lifestyle, and her intentions. I had seen a video about her apartment before that didn't really go into the sustainable lifestyle that she encourages or the fact that she's really a scientist! So this was lovely to watch and learn more.

Wow, you have taken indoor plants to the max. I have never seen so many plants in an apartment. Caring for these must take some time. Bet the air in there is like a hyperbaric chamber, very healing. Except for the chicken.

There is an attractiveness to her space. I was wondering if the same type of planting style could be done with edible plants. She answered that when she said that food plants brought her so many unexpected insect pests. I can see how that space could be a very restful place though. Thanks for posting this.

Yeah, I am wondering the same thing. When I saw the title of this video "Homestead Brooklyn", I thought that's what it was about so it's a misleading title. Although very earthy, her apartment full of non-edible plants is not at all the same as a homestead !

YOU INSPIRE ME. I AM MOVING INTO A 3 BEDROOM 3 STORY CONDOMINIUM IN DOWNTOWN BANGKOK THAILAND AND I WILL HAVE SO MUCH ROOM I COULD PROBABLY GROW MY OWN RAIN FOREST. WHEN I SAW YOU HAD A PLATYCERIUM (STAGHORN FERN) I KNEW YOU HAD TO BE A GOOD PERSON. LOL I HAVE A DEGREE IN AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING BUT HAVE NEVER PUT IT TO GOOD USE SO THIS MAY BE THE TIME TO START. MY CONDO IS ABOUT AS MUCH AS YOURS IS ON EACH FLOOR SO IT WILL TAKE ME A WHILE TO CATCH UP WITH YOU. I WILL SEND YOU PICTURES AS IT PROGRESSES.

Amazing! I always have problems growing plants in the kitchen. With chinese cooking the heat always kill the surrounding plants. Also hanging plants from ceiling proved to be a challenge for me for watering, it also wet the floor. It must be real hard work for her, a full time job to maintain her indoor garden.👍
