If you use it during the day do not put any citrus essential oils because you can Some cold-pressed essential oils, particularly the citrus oils, can be phototoxic when applied to skin that is then exposed to sunlight. ... Phototoxic effects may include redness, blistering and rash.

My mix for mosquitoes and horseflies: one ounce water, one Ounce white vinegar, 1/2 ounce baby oil, 15 drops of clove oil, 15 drops of lemon grass oil. 1 or 2 drops of liquid dish soap. Shake & spray on exposed skin. There is a smell of vinegar but with the clove & lemongrass I don’t find it terribly offensive. I have found this to be very effective for at several hrs. Clove oil in wonderful stuff. Love the smell. The outdoor gun range that I have a membership has a lot of horseflies and they are aggressive. This stuff works extremely well for me.

Essential oils can be toxic to pets. Many essential oils such as eucalyptus, tea tree, cinnamon, citrus, oregano, clove, pennyroyal, peppermint, pine, sweet birch, wintergreen and ylang ylang are toxic to pets. It may cause breathing problems. My cat nearly suffocated. Her throat was so badly swollen she couldn’t eat or even drink water. We took her to the vet. $400 later. The vet told us cats are very sensitive to smell. It can even cause nerve and brain damage. Essential oils are toxic for pets. Consult your vet before you end up with a sick pet.

@@amandadupreez6105 - I use the mixture on me, not my pets…. But I agree that if using anything on pets you should research the ingredients. In fact researching for use on humans is probably sound advise also. We don’t want loved ones to be hurt by our diy concoctions.

🌺Oh my I can’t wait to try this. My father was a Hare Krsna and my mother a true hippie from the 60s both from California.... So I grew up in an ALL natural home with gardens, no chemicals, and home remedies.... Both of them passed when I was in my very early 20s so unfortunately I wasn’t able to pick their brains and learn everything..!!! I try very hard to raise my family in a very natural environment and the bug spray is HUGE!!! When I moved here to Missouri I was eaten ALIVE by the mosquitos !!! One of my sons and I are basically allergic, so I’m so very excited to try out something more natural and less harmful as we have to apply bug spray every single day as we love the outdoors 😊🌺🌸

I am going to try some of this. I never put chemical bug sprays on my skin, though I do get desperate and spray my clothes sometimes. I have had really good results using Avons Skin So Soft. I often rub my horses down with it. But for me, I can't stand oil on my skin when it's hot. It traps the heat in and breaks me out. Putting it on the animals, attracts dirt, but the oil does last longer than water base. Skin So Soft smells so strong, it kind gives me a headache. I bet if my horses could talk, they probably don't like it either. lol However, I love the smell of all these herbs. And I am thinking the one made with vinegar, would smell like salad dressing. yum. Some people tell me they have no luck with herbal sprays for bugs. I think it is because they don't keep reapplying it. Anything natural has to be reapplied often. Especially if it is water based.Great job ya'll!

catnip, juniper greens. as kids we use to use catnip for flying insects on our skin. out in the wild we found out that to get away from the mosquitoes we would hide near an evergreens. junipers were the best. the mosquitoes do not like junipers. the juniper needles do have a nice bit of oils in it but the catnip does not. it wears off really fast. so i use a light oil to hold the catnip longer. one should not confuse the juniper with the arborvitae. catnip grows in the gardin reasonably fast.

while i was studying in college and going up to the alaska fisheries for college money. my freind and i would enjoy fishing all the time up there. i bought packs and packs of these little cigars they make a lot of smoke. but my freind never used anything to keep the mosquitos away. he then taught me to eat a lot of garlic. and that's why the mosquitoes did not bother him so much.

Good video. I do want to let you know you cant just boil water and call it distilled...that is simply boiled water. There is a significant difference and the minerals in boiled water will actually be more concentrated due to the waters evaporation. To distill it you need to capture and condense the steam... Edit: it's actually very simple to capture and condense the steam. You need a large funnel, food grade tubing, and an "icebox"...use ypur imagination. Cheers

Hi Stacy & Doug! I found your videos a while back and really enjoyed all your homemade, natural, recipes, as well as the wealth of knowledge, experience, and encouragement you both freely share with others, thank you! I have such great respect for you both and the lifestyle you lead; so encouraging, even more so in light of the last few years! I live in Italy where it is terribly humid and full of mosquitos. I am excited to try your homemade spray! Can this spray be used on your face as well? Will it work on those little gnats that fly around your face aggressively in swarms? I have never experienced them quite like this year! I feel like all these horrible garden problems have increased lately (almost biblically) like never before!! In the last few years, we have also had an import problem of Japanese beetles that are devastating everything. They are also TERRIBLY aggressive! They actually seem to seek out a person, and within seconds, arrives swarms of them that will attack you and get you running for cover!! It's so scary! I'm wondering if you have a particular recipe or helpful technique on how to keep them away, and most importantly, drive their numbers down? I can't go out in the garden now to work until they are gone at the end of August! They will have laid their eggs for next season devastation, then they seem to disappear (die off?) in dormancy in the grass/ soil? They are wretched creatures! Do you have any experience with them or advice you could give me? Thank you again for your wonderful videos! God bless you both. ❤Paj from Italy

Maybe fill the bottle with the water and then pour it in a pan. Bring to a boil, shut off and add a couple to three tablespoons of herbs in the water and let it set for 1/2 hour. Pour strain the now liquid tea back into the bottle. Now, using a spray bottle of your choice, fill it half with witch hazel and half with the tea. Cloves, lavender and mint are good to use.

This is going to sound weird and nasty, BUT, here goes anyway. I no longer shower using soap (except once weekly I shampoo my hair with Dr. Bronner's). Instead, I merely rinse off every other day. I know, that sounds gross, but I feel cleaner, no longer need underarm deoderant (no smell) and nobody has ever said they smelled anything foul (I've asked). I also do not brush my teeth 😬 and haven't for about 14 years now. Instead, I pick and rinse, however, I also eat ZERO sugars - meat only of late and have robust oral health. Mosquitoes? They hover now and then, but don't land. I do supplement vitamins B1 though. Maybe that's what deters bugs, I dunno.
