Our week 4 tips can help you save lots of money. An old-fashioned skill that is important to bring back is baking your own bread. Our approach is practical and easy to implement into your busy life.
This winter I will be adding more content to our channel and blog on baking sourdough for busy homesteaders.
XOXO,
Caren

The old ways of celebration were more personable and fostered stronger family ties. We learned to appreciate each other more and not be concerned with what we could get from one another! Since I am your age, I can relate and wished we still followed the traditions. Of course, like so many families today we are scattered all around the U.S. and world.

I am really enjoying your frugal living tips videos…thank you for doing them! One question about chickens…I know Mr. Rueffer said his family used white leghorns growing up but what breed or cross breeds do you use for meat chickens currently?

We use Plymouth Rock and Buff Orpington breeds for meat. At the moment they are all cross-bred because we raise our own chicks. We also keep the Araucana breed which is a thin bird but has gotten crossed in our flock. Thank you for watching!

I have raised delaware chickens, from incubated eggs. Went to workshop on how to process them. Hope to do that when they are 3 to 4 months old. It so far has not, been cost effective. Will see how the meat taste. I tried castile soap for my hair and vinegar rinse. I did not like the result. Had to,go back to reg shampoo. It may be the type of water here. Love your channel and tips.

Yes, chicken feed especially organic chicken feed can be expensive. Have you tried fermenting grains for chickens? This will extend the amount of feed. It can take months to adjust to using a shampoo bar. Our water is super hard so it has taken a very long time to adjust. Lots of bad hair days at first. I appreciate you giving it a try and commenting. Thanks for watching!

I tried following your instructions for making sourdough starter. I failed. I must need further instruction. Plus I wanted to do it without refrigeration.

@texasfarmsteadliving-caren9517 I'm not sure where I went wrong. Maybe I didn't go enough days. I tried the float test but I wasn't sure what I was looking for. My starter smelled like dirty socks. I don't know what to ask.

If you live in a warm climate then fermentation will move along faster, therefore you will have to discard and feed twice daily. To start I would put 1/4 cup water and 1/2 cup flour in a jar for 1-2 days then start discarding and feeding until the starter becomes very active between feedings (maybe one week). The water needs to be filtered water and I would use organic flour if possible. If this fails Cultures for Health sells sourdough starters. Hope this helps.
