Hi everyone lets see how pine burns in a outdoor wood boiler! Pine gets a bad name in the world of firewood but in a outdoor wood boiler like my ecentral boiler CL 6048 this thing EATS pine all day long. This unit is a non gasification unit so I can burn pine all day any day. I hope you enjoy this video on burning pine in a outdoor wood boiler!

I like that the machine likes to eat pine. I burn some pine in my wood stove as well down here in Alabama. I have a lot of short small fires and good dry pine gets it going in a hurry. Then switch to the hardwood so I have the coal bed to start the next fire. Take care brother.

Hey there! Yes I am glad it likes pine too! Some don’t unfortunately. Pine is abundance around here so I’m fortunate to be able to capitalize on it !

A common misconception of burning pine is the danger of burning it indoors due to the buildup of creosote and tar in the chimney flu. Burning pine is fine as long as it is dry and the chimney is cleaned on a regular bases. It is only when people neglect cleaning the chimney regularly is when problems occur. A hot fire reduces the amount of buildup in the flu. A cooler fire has lower temperatures in the flu causing buildup on the walls regardless of the type of wood being burned. I predominantly burn hardwoods because that is what is readily available in my area, but I have family who live in an area that is very abundant in softwoods and they have been burning that inside for years without issues. So as long as you keep that fire hot, use dry seasoned wood, and get the chimney cleaned regularly, you should be perfectly fine.

Agreed! For me in the OWB it doesnt matter as much but I try to season as much as I can! These pieces missing bark are very seasoned so they burn nice and dont smoke that much! Thank you for the detailed comment! I couldnt agree more!

I burn a lot of pine in my Mahoning non-gasification outside wood burner, especially early in the season. It doesn’t create any problems at all. I like to use it in the early season, because it does make a little creosote around the door gasket, and that helps seal it up so I don’t get any air leaks. I’ve never had a problem with pine or hemlock or spruce. Having a 4 foot firebox is nice, I love my 30x30x48” firebox. I never used to split anything, but now I do, so my wife can load the burner if she needs to. Don’t you ever get a fire flash by opening your door like that? I open mine a little and wait about 30 seconds before swinging the door open. My stove directions say to open the ash door first to prevent fire flash, but I don’t do that. The first time you lose your eyebrows, you’ll open it slowly from then on.
@HomesteadJay
@HomesteadJay 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Denny! LOL ive had a few eyebrow moments the first year lol the reason I flew the door open is because I knew that there was only the slab in there! If I have it loaded up I crack it open and wait a second to see what it does but this case i knew it wasnt going to blow flames LOL! Im glad you have similar luck with your machine! Thanks for coming on by! See you on the next one!

We live in a pine forest. 99%pine. Burn it in my outdoor burner (central boiler cl6048) does just fine. If I had more hardwood I'd of course burn that, but I like the pine, its straight, easy to process and grows real fast. Thx

I have had this same unit for about 15 years and I have burnt a lot of pine through it. It does not last as long as hardwood and does not leave the coals that hardwood does. When I first got it a friend had a ton of slabs from his portable sawmill and they were free which just happened to be in my price range so I burnt a lot of them. The problem with slabs is that they are from the outer part of logs which is not as dense as the center. When I get pine from bigger trees and let it dry it lasts a lot longer. I don't know if I ever only put one piece of wood in mine.
@HomesteadJay

Hey Glock! Yeah this one slab had a great coal bed to sit on haha but you are correct about no coals left! How annoying is it? I cant stand it hahaha I wish I had 50/50 slabs that would be great! Half pine and hardwood would be amazing!

Definitely a different way to burn. I like to cut and split my wood so I can get the maximum heat value out of it. But with your boiler sitting there idling half the time, it doesn't seem you are worried about it. I burn pine in mine as well, but I make sure it is split and very dry. Then it burns great.

I have a Hardy H2 outside wood furnace. The problem is... when I try to burn pine it burns good and delivers good heat, but does not leave any coals. I have to mix it with other woods to provide a coal bed to keep the fire going all the time as if I just use pine, there's nothing there to stoke back up when the fan comes on.
@HomesteadJay
@HomesteadJay 2 жыл бұрын
Jerry! You are 100% correct! Pine does that for sure! So I often load it with pine and stick a hardwood log off to the side to just "coal over" that way when I go to reload I can spread those coals around refill with more slabwood and add another "coal over" log on the side! Ill make a video on it when the wood heat season returns!

There is nothing wrong with pine in a non gasification type OWB. You gotta burn what you have available to you. Some places don’t have an abundance of hardwoods. As long as you keep the unit maintained there isn’t a problem at all.

@HomesteadJay 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike! Agreed for sure! I don't know why they new units (Gasification) you can't burn pine. Its so dumb to me... I would loose half of my wood capability if I couldn't burn pine!

@@HomesteadJay I have a gasification boiler and burn 100% pine in it. This is my first year and still learning everything so I have nothing to judge it against but it seems to burn fine and usually sits in the 600-1000 temps. I do have black pine tar everywhere and I assume it will gum up my heat exchangers quicker than non-pine burning boilers.

What about the sap and creosote? We've learned our wood burner definitely likes rounds for sure but we were scared to use pine for those reasons.
@HomesteadJay
@HomesteadJay Жыл бұрын
The creosote arguement is so annoying when it comes to pine and soft woods. People think the machines will explode if you burn pine. IF you have seasoned pine you have nothing to worry about. I know dozens of people who live out west and burn 100% ponderosa/doug fir becuase thats what they have available. Mix it in 50/50 and youll have no issues. As long as you keep you machine clean I.E. chimney, damper door, heat exchangers, etc.. depending on how your machine is built.
