When you have a cow to feed you learn more than you thought you could about hay.
Feeding a cow can be complicated. You need to consider the protein levels, what makes up the hay, what cutting the hay is...
You also need to find a source for the hay, get a good price for it, figure out how to get it to your farm, and store it.
PLUS make sure the hay doesn't BURN DOWN THE BARN!
We talk cow hay in today's video.

You should build a hay feeder so you get less waste. Even just stopping them from being able to stand/pee on it will save a lot of feed, and getting it off the floor and having a rain cover will be even better! With 2 cows you'd only need something small and you could even put wheels on it so you could move it around to stop one area of dirt getting trampled.

Austin, as children we would put up hay loose and once my grandfather started to bale we still did the same, the way we corrected for the moisture was we would salt the hay, either loss or baled just put a layer of salt on top of each layer and then it will absorb the moisture.

@@BrianBriCurInTheOC it all depends I buy from several farms. Color smell weight age 1st 2nd 3rd cut what kind of hay what time of year. It all makes a difference in what ill give for hay. I feed steers and goats sometimes a horse. So yea it depends. I got 4x4 and 4x5 round bales of Orchard Grass / Timothy for 15 to 20 a bale. Square bales not overly heavy I got for 2.50 to 3.25. My Grandfather's barn burnt down in the late 60's! It as a horrible fire. A huge sacrifice as he was a dairy farm that no longer existed. It was never rebuilt to this day and only the cement block walls were around till new owners removed as they were then broken down.

Stacking bales is good training. lol Brings back memories when we got our 312 straw bales. everyone had to be lifted up 3meter (9 feet) with a hay fork and then stacked in warm loft. And I was the one who got to stack them all. And it itch so bad afterwards. It's good that it's not often you have to do it. You're hay really looks nice and green and can imagine how nice it must smells to

I'd be getting on the stick checking the moisture too! Nothing to mess around with. Also, don't leave any full or half full, clear water bottles in the loft where the sun can hit them. It'll act like a magnifying glass and catch the hay on fire.

4.00 a bale is a unheard of price here. You would be lucky to get it at 8.00 a bale if you go out in the field and load it yourself. Feed stores get about 12 to 15 a square bale. Our round bales are all over the price range here. With the drought in the summer and now it does not have time to dry out from the rain to make it easy to bale. Then we are getting army worms. Here after a drought and it starts raining the grass turns green and starts growing. Then the army worms come through. They will strip the blades of grass off the stems. Before you know you have them they can strip a hay field. I have heard of it selling as high as 100.00 to 125.00 a round bale. Even round bales can catch on fire and they are stacked outside. I have seen guys go out and move them away from each other if they get to hot. Very good lesson on the hay guys. There are so many people that don't realize many operations that go into having cows.

Our West Coast bales are baled a lot tighter, bigger and heavier.... about 110 lbs. each. I don't buy in bulk. I have paid up to $25/bale when the gas prices are high during drought. Last year it was about $18/bale, went up a little to $21/bale now. This is for grass/alfalfa mix for horses. I live near Silicon Valley and our hay gets trucked in from NorCal or Oregon. Since I am feeding only two horses, I have no idea where to get round bales or even if I can get them her on the West Coast!!!! Don't have equipment to deal with them anyway. Climate is drier here so the bales don't have to be small and loose like in PA. Dries out better.

Not "fire is EMINENT"; that would mean something like "the fire is well known, or highly respected". The Great Chicago Fire is eminent in American history. Since your barn is isolated so that the fire would not spread to other buildings causing a general conflagration, it would never become eminent. The word you meant to say is 'imminent', i.e. about to happen.

$4.....hooley dooley. Here in my part of NSW Australia I am paying an average of $20 a bale! And with the drought being as bad as it is some people are paying $30 a bale. In a good year it costs around $12 from a wholesale supplier...no one sells good hay direct around here. Some people are carting hay from Western Australia to NSW just to feed their animals. Also, why not use Copra Meal for your cows instead of grain. It's good for ruminants, high in protein, non gmo and chemical free; plus the animals love it. I add in some organic kelp meal + vit E + Selenium + nutritional yeast + calcium...mix it in and give it to the goats. CLOTHES in trees to blend in for hunting so animals don't smell you. If you don't use fragranced products it will be better for hunting and your health.

Moisture content of the hay should always be taken seriously up to 6 weeks after baling. Several barns burn down every year from spontaneous combustion. Your hay mow is not as crucial since you have quite a bit of space and the hay isn't stacked tightly so it can sweat out.

Please be sure to always tear apart the hay bales when you feed them to animals: there could be all kinds of nasty things accidentally bound up it, including dead field mice! 💀🐭🤢 (Not accusing your seller of anything, of course. It's just a tip I learned from Rick Gore of the Think Like A Horse channel: he's found plastic garbage, dead critters, and even bits of metal like barbed wire inside bales and flakes of hay!)

What herbicides and chemical fertilizers were used to grow the hay or feed? after all what you feed the cow and then drink the milk is the same as a nursing mother it goes to the infant or in case of cows milk people drink it. I know this because I got an infection after the birth of my second daughter and was nursing her and had to stop until I was no longer on medication and it was out of my system. the doctor explained to me that the medication would concentrate in my milk and it wouldn't be good for my daughter to drink it because they didn't know what health risks it could cause her at the time or long term. she was born in the 80's when chemicals and prescriptions weren't like fast food chains or the express lane at the local market. The doctors I chose were careful not to prescribe stuff that wasn't needed and even helped me choose natural means such as foods herbs and minerals and vitamins. and only use antibiotics and prescription meds when necessary. So it's something all ranchers and farmers need to know about the foods they are feeding their animals. I like farmers that do not mind someone making sure their product is top quality. but I do think the above question should be asked along with some questions you mentioned that I'd never thought to ask. Thanks for sharing.

Erin May Cows need to have a calf to start lactation but they do not need to be bred to keep milking. They do need to be dried up at least 2 months before calving again. To put their energy into the calf’s development. The first milk has colostrum in it to give the cows antibodies and immunities to the calf. This colostrum is critical to the calf’s health. I freeze extra colostrum to save and have on hand if needed.
