Homesteady

Күн бұрын

A homestead is a place of production. Food, fiber, and fuel are just a few of the things a homestead can produce for a family. Most importantly, a homestead can produce a great quality of life for you, and those you care most about.
In this video we give you a tour of our homestead at its peak, early summer. This time of year is a busy one for us. We have chickens on pasture, for both meat and eggs. We have pigs we are raising to feed our family, and provide us with some product to sell to our local community. We have a cow in the fields, eating grass. She is pregnant, producing a calve, and soon, farm fresh milk. We also have ducks, turkeys, and guineas, all helping to produce and care for the land we live on.
We also are growing plants on our homestead. Potatoes, tomatoes, herbs. The new orchard is growing apples, pears, peaches, plumbs, nectarines and lots and lots of berries!
In addition to food, our homestead provides us with fuel, energy, and a wonderful place to raise a family. Take a tour of our homestead today, and be inspired to grow your own homestead!

Wow. I have 4 kids, theyre 6, 4, and the twins are 1. We have an acre and a half and plan on getting chickens and bees moved in by next spring.... along with our potatoes, pumpkins, onions, and apple trees. To be honest i was feeling a bit overwhelmed until i heard what you said toward the end about how you were still working on it and plan to do more over time. Thanks for the inspiration!

Funnily enough it doesn't get all that much more work once you get more animals. You still have to get up early to feed and potentionally milk them and you have to clean their stands regularly, but it's not much different whether it's one or three cows. Sure, it's different when it's 10 or more cows, but then you'd also naturally get some kind of machine to help, so the time spent at it is still roughly the same. And with children around it's just a blast. Even a preschool kid can take care of the chickens or ducks or feed the rabbits if you cut the grass for him, he or she can also take care of hay if you prepare it yourselves (I would know, that's how I've been raised). A kid at around 10 can learn how to milk a cow or at least a sheep and help with the feeding, he or she can clean the coop on their own. A teenage boy at around 15 will be able to take care of a grown up bull if he's been raised on a farm. It helps if the first born or at least one of the children is raised in the fashion of staying on the property with his or her family. In their own house if needs be, but it ensures enough manpower for when you grow old without having to worry that what you've build is gonna be gone once you can no longer take care of it all. Y'know, just like how it's natural for humans.

I found implementing one aspect at a time allowed me to build up my homestead whilst continuing working a full time job. This way it did not become overwhelming. Started with chickens, then sheep, then bees. My orchard I expand by a few trees every year. I was also able to have cows agisted on my property, allowing me to learn about keeping them. I ended up buying one of cows with a heifer calf and have been milking for nearly 6 months now. It is a fantastic addition to our home. Videos like this encourage me to continue building upon our homestead. Thank you for the tour!

I enjoyed watching the video. I found the information useful, for example you distinguish between a meat chicken and chicken for eggs. I like the fact that the chickens have access to a forest, as that is where they are most comfortable. The information about the pigs was useful; I had not realized that a pig could grow so much in 6 months. Very practical and useful information

I love gardening and having my own resources. I cannot have livestock where I live but I grow a lot of fruits and veggies...herbs too. I grow food everywhere. I really like vertical gardening as it takes up less space. I enen grow black pepper plants in pots which I overwinter indoors. They are super easy to propagate for sharing. I also have dwarf bananas which I overwinter indoors. 😀

Potatoes are a great way to have filling meals for close to nothing in cost. I know they say don’t, but after the first yr of buying the seed potatoes, I don’t spend a penny. I take some of the crappy potatoes that grew and let them spud, and plant those ones. Never had an issue with disease or problems.
