Awesome video! Another pro for ducks IS that they do dirty their water. I rotate my birds through my orchard and at the end of the day I collect all that dirty duck and goose water and use it to water my fruit trees, my sunflowers, and even my vegetable garden (just not leafy greens) and I have to say that all of those plants respectively did amazing this year! Especially those sunflowers which got the occasional duck water and rainwater whenever it rained and they are easily 10ft tall with huge heads! So that dirty duck water filled with nutrients is a liquid fertilizer that your ducks made for you to use…how cool is that?!

I got guineas. And so far they are diligently doing their part to control fly larva and ticks. The trick is to train them to the hen house for at least 8 weeks and to make sure once they are free you encourage them going into the henhouse every day. If you don’t the owls will get them all slowly but surely.

Also good to note ducks are avid slug destroyers. As a big gardener I love them for that and my two male ducks earn their keep solely through this service. Gobble up the dastardly things. I guess that’s regional tho haha. I live in the PNW so slugs are garden enemy number 1.

Another from the maritime Pac NW and ducks for the win here. Ducks eating the slugs without destroying the garden, and not minding the semi perpetual wet edge out the chicken for me. Still run both as chickens are great for making compost, but also run turkeys, geese, quail, rabbits, with pigs, sheep, goats, and eventually cows in the pipeline.

My mother had both chickens and ducks. She gave away extra eggs at the food pantry where she worked on the clothing side. No one wanted the duck eggs. She actually was told by one person that the yolks were TOO orange. So, if you plan on selling eggs, before going whole hog with ducks, test your market out.

Very well done! I like it. PLEASE BRING UP LOCATION WHEN CONSIDERING POULTRY CHOICE. I capitalized for attention because we found in the far northern midwest the freezing temperatures greatly effect what is easier to raise. Because of the freezing water, ducks are something we phased out although we enjoyed the animal. But not only was it hard to water them, but they created major ice issues wherever they are housed. But a tip for keeping it much cleaner brooding ducklings is to use straw on top instead of pine shavings. Trust me, wave goodbye to soggy, stinky woodchips and hello to fresh clean straw that extends how often you need to clean the brooder.

I vote chickens - there's a reason most people have chickens. I can't get enough chickens. I started with 3 chickens, now 28. All friends and pets - you can make pets of chickens. Nobody mentioned that they are affectionate. I know, ya'll look at chickens as food, but they have personality and can be friends. And they make friends with each other - I try to keep the ones who are friends together. Of course, I'm not trying to make money off chickens, but I do get paid for eggs sometimes. Aust, I just get so tickled every time I see my painting of Ladybug on your wall. I've sold thousands of paintings and prints, and I often see them on people's walls, but somehow it just makes me smile every time I see that painting.

I grew up with both chickens and ducks and prefer my ducks to have conversations with and my chickens for friendliness. I currently have 4 1 month old duckies. They are plucky for sure. Also grew up with geese, it’s why I am not afraid of Canada Gesse, since I got beaten up a lot by a goose I a bad mood who was offended by me just breathing in their direction 🤣 I miss Olaf the Toulouse, he used to sit in my lap and if my friends tried to pet him he’d give them the side eye and hiss. He was the nicest goose we had since he thought he was a dog

This was so fun and informative!!! I think chickens win-at least for me. But we have successfully raised chickens for over 25 years (very small scale for family use only) with no major problems, besides wild dogs breaking into our yard a few times. I can say in my 71 yrs I have not eaten a duck egg or duck. However in the 70's and 80's I was on the hunt for duck eggs to decorate. Chickens, ducks, geese, and a few quail eggs are in my curio cabinet. I enjoyed the podcast. In SC, childhood memory was my grandmama would walk out the back steps grab a chicken from her flock for dinner. Fresh eggs and chickens are the best. They didn't have ducks.

I opted for chickens as they make less mess, was easier for me to aquire only females and i appreciate their scratching as it turns the soil. I'd also want to try duck eggs before i raise any and no one around here sells duck eggs. I won't take "trust me it's better" as that's what i was told about goat milk and i cannot stand goat milk. Last time i had a goat milk product i nearly gagged and i immediately had to go get something to get the foul taste out of my mouth. So, i am definitely going to try before i raise any ducks

i had 4 chicken in the past. the biggest problem with the chicken is the hot summer temperature. they can die of heat stroke. right now i have three female (hen) and one male (drake). compare the work and health issue for chicken and duck, i would say duck is much easier to care for all year round. chicken has to have heat lamp during winter where as duck adapts to all year round temperature as long as you have a tub of water in the grassy area to soak up splashing water. i have more fun watching ducks dunking their head/body into water. chicken and duck will have waste to deal with. great for compose mix and garden.

I grew up on my dad's farm in Arizona and I would say for beginner's chickens are best because with chickens it's easier to reproduce them because ducks need some sort of body of water to lay fertile eggs for the next generation, and chickens don't have that requirement to reproduce the next generation of chickens.
