I show how to convert a kerosene burner to alcohol in this different video: • Convert a Kerosene Bur...
This stove uses Svea 1915 kerosene burners that have been converted to burn denatured alcohol. The video demonstrates proper preheat, lighting and operation of the stove. The video illustrates the light surging that occurs using modern denatured alcohols (in 2013).
UPDATE ON FUELS!!
These stoves were intended to be used with once common almost pure ethanol, the kind of alcohol found in beer and booze (aka grain alcohol). Denatured alcohol used to be mostly ethanol with some poisons in it to keep you from drinking it. Some of those poisons include methyl ethyl ketone, acetone and methanol (aka wood alcohol). None of those poisons will burn as well as straight ethanol and they tend to have low vaporization points which contribute to the surging effect of these stoves. Methanol is NOT a replacement for ethanol and will burn poorly in alcohol stoves. Methanol is also highly poisonous, even it it's vaporized state. SINCE THIS VIDEO WAS MADE and due to the increased use of ethanol in automotive fuels, ethanol has become much more expensive. In order to keep the denatured alcohol less expensive, manufacturers are now formulating blends of denatured alcohol that may contain as little as 51% ethanol. These formulations with their high content of methanol, MEK and acetone, may create even more surging in these stoves - to the point where the flames may even blow themselves out.
The best fuels currently available for these stoves are the various "green" formulations of denatured alcohol which contain a much higher percentage of ethanol. Or, even better, get high ethanol fuel directly from sources such as Amazon which will sell you lab-quality 90% ethanol denatured alcohol. The product I show in the video is no longer such a good fuel since the change of formulation. Instead, try:
www.kleanstrip.com/product/gre...
These green fuels with their high ethanol content are more expensive due to the demand for ethanol for use in auto fuels driving up the price of ethanol. If you decide they are too expensive for your use in the stove, your best bet is to convert your stove back to burn much less expensive kerosene. Kerosene is the fuel for which these burners were originally designed and its higher vaporization point means that surging is mostly eliminated using this fuel when burners are fitted with brass mesh surge arrestors.

🙏THANK YOU Sir!! Young people today are lost without people like you to help us. My daddy died and he didn’t get a chance to show me how or what to use on the boat stove and camping stove before he passed away. He always took care of it. At least now I won’t blow myself up. Daddy always had the answers to my questions and I could always count on him. RIP Daddy.🙏😭😢 Thank you for helping us daddy-less daughters out here!! 🤗💞🤗

I can probably help you out, but I'd need to see some photos of what you have to know what the stove is and what the problems might be. Why not just drop me a note to my email and include a few photos (you can easily take them with your smart phone)? Talk to you soon. 👍 berniedawgstove@comcast.net BD

Nice video. I recently bought two of these. One was silver colored like this, the other golden. It was helpful when I lit up the silver one, so that I didn't freak out when it started to pulse and gurgle. The golden one has a cracked pipe between the tank and the left burner. I got the pipe loose, but I'm having difficulty identifying the type of pipe and the type of threading. Do you happen to know the pipe size and threading type, BSPT or NPT or metric?
@BernieDawgCinema
@BernieDawgCinema 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! These came in a range (pun intended) of colors back in the day. I know all the details on replacing and threading pipes. Done more than one. It's a bit of a complicated operation and maybe more than the average Joe is going to be able to take on. So, drop me a line and I'll share with you off this public comment system so's we don't have broken pipes from the newbies flying every which way. 😲😉😎👍 bd@berniedawg.com BD

I see you’re still slowly uncovering, the very long and hard way, all the info I could have provided to you in a simple single email. So much effort and so many missteps asking folks who have little to no skills or knowledge on social forums. I feel bad for you. Very sad really. You could have finished by now. 😕 BD

Well, since they haven't been made for 30+ years, you'll most easily find them on eBay. They are no longer available new. Do searches on eBay for "homestrand stove", "mariner stove", "boat stove" and/or "kenyon stove". Might take a week or a couple of months of looking before one you like will turn up. Good luck! BD

Figure I filled mine with rubbing alcohol now what do I do to save it
@BernieDawgCinema
@BernieDawgCinema 3 жыл бұрын
@Angela Gottman First thing? Read the online instructions: www.cookwithkenyon.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Homestrand_Alc_Stove_Model_205A_Manual565.pdf Then, dump out the rubbing alcohol. Blow some air into the tank on a sunny day and the rubbing alcohol should mostly evaporate. Replace the fuel cap seal and the relief valve pip in the fuel cap. Replace the pip in the pump check valve. Put quality denatured alcohol (greater than 70% ethanol) in the tank. Preheat. Light. Burn through a couple of tanks to flush out all the rubbing alcohol. Have fun cooking with your properly fueled stove. BD

@jimmybritt9537 Please read the description under the video. I cover all the reasons why or why not you might want to use various fuels and I discuss the use of "pure alcohol" (100% ethanol) in the stove. Pretty well already answered your question there. 👍 BD

I know as kids we used to set moonshine on fire and it burned a beautiful blue flame .
@BernieDawgCinema
@BernieDawgCinema 11 ай бұрын
@jimmybritt9537 Heh-heh! I'd bet Dad wasn't at all happy about you kids getting into his moonshine. Everclear (grain alcohol) will work well in these stoves, but it's not cheap, illegal in some US States, and, where you can buy it, usually kept for drinking rather than burning. BD

Hmm I wonder if (high alcohol content) moonshine would work as a fuel. 😂
@BernieDawgCinema

@Andy Hatfield Pretty funny comment from a guy by the name "Hatfield". But, what may be a surprise to you is that, yes, you *can* use good quality high-alcohol content "moonshine" in an alcohol stove. Think 190 proof Everclear (if it's available where you live). Works great, but costs a lot and and is sort of a waste of drinkable booze I should think. BD

@@BernieDawgCinema 🤣 I wondered if anyone would catch the last name mixed with the moonshine comment. I feel as though that would be much better fuel source than having the added chemicals in your fuel. I had assumed it would work so I appreciate the reassurance. I may have to give it a try when I finally land a good alcohol stove more my small sailboat. Great video btw!
