I have posted a couple videos on this Reolink NVR and Security Camera kit and today I’ll review with you my install location, run the wires from inside my home to the proposed installation area outside, mount the cameras and lastly check out the footage.
This is a 4K security camera system in a box, including 4X 4k cameras and NVR or Network Video Recorder and it costs around $500US. In those videos, I unboxed the system and introduced all of their technical specifications and then initialized the NVR to ensure it works as expected. Now it’s time to install the cameras in my proposed location. If you are not sure where to install your cameras, do check my video on Planning your system installation.
I plan on installing my cameras here, on this post by my front door. One camera on each side will give me the perfect view. 1. Along the side of my house, 2. My front door, 3. My garage doors, 4. And lastly my driveway. Unfortunately, I don’t have easy access into the 2 sections of soffit and I don’t want to drill holes in these and damage them. Since I move cameras around so much and I’m always upgrading, I don’t want to replace soffit, because for me, it’s not a fun activity. Instead I’m going to use the top of this pillar as my install location but I need to get my network cables up there and protect the wires and connections.
So, here’s the plan. I’ll use direct burial cables and run them in conduit from my basement, out the wall and down into the ground. They will exit the conduit and travel about 8 feet then renter conduit and travel up the pillar and then terminate inside of exterior junction boxes. I will then mount the cameras on the junction box covers. This keeps the cables safe from the elements and gives them a neat, finished look. It also prevents anyone from sneaking up and snipping them. I can even replace the camera in the future with only damaging the junction box covers, which can easily be replaced. Reolink does sell junction boxes for this very purpose, with pre-drilled holes to match the camera mounts. I will be using standard electrical junction boxes from home depot because I need a different configuration of side holes, plus, with standard boxes, you have many more accessories and options.
Let me just say that running wires can be challenging in any camera install project, especially if your home or business is already built and the walls are finished. Every situation is different and I do review a couple in my planning video. It depends on your abilities and comfort level. There are many approaches to completing this task, but today, I’ll be digging trenches, drilling holes in my house and installing conduit.
I’ll install the conduit with the network cables pre-installed. Once this is stood up next to the pillar, I will run the cables inside to a patch panel. Once the junction boxes are installed, the cables can now be terminated with RJ-45 connectors. To install the cameras, I will need to place the junction box cover on first, followed by the mount. The cables roll up nicely into the junction box and can be sealed.
Lastly, I show some sample 4K footage from day and night. Looks better than I hoped.

Just a quick tip if you have an existing hole from a hole saw that you need to make bigger, you can usually double up the smaller size hole saw inside the bigger one on the bit itself, and use that as your pilot hole. That assumes they're the same brand, so I always buy the same brand hole saws.

What an excellent video. I have a number of cameras sitting around waiting to be installed. I too have poor access to the soffit area and into the attic and have been considering various options. I might go this route but I have to figure out if I want to use outdoor rated ethernet and just tuck it into the vinyl siding under the soffit around the house, or if I want to paint conduit and mount it along the roof line under the soffit. Outdoor cable tucked away would be less noticeable, but conduit would help in the future if I ever needed to replace the cables.

Glad you found the video helpful. Tucking the wires into the siding is a great solution. I have done that a few times and it's a pretty quick solution. I did have a little trouble on 90-degree turns where the wires were a little visible. Yes, if you need to replace the wires, pulling them out carefully not to damage the siding.

Hi, how about spider web on these reolink turret cameras? I just got rlc-510a camera system and all my bullet camera's are covered with spider web if I use night vision with IR leds. Some people saying needs changing from bullet to turret style camera some saying that I have to turn off IR lights and use external IR source.

Unless you can access and hide (and then seal) a hole for the connector behind the wall, it seems junction boxes are the best solution to hide the fittings.

Would it be OK to use RJ45 couplers instead of a patch panel as I will only be running 5 or 6 network cables from the NVR location to rear porch roof space before I run the cables to the camera locations around the back garden, as the patch panels I see are like 24ports which is way more than I will ever need?

Nice job, good future-proofing as well. Something you might consider in the future would be remote IR emitters. You can turn off the IR in the cameras and that cuts down on the spider attraction. You can also paint the top part of the downspouts black which helps with glare even if they are just outside this picture. Thanks again.

I have a camera setup to read number plates. At night I had the problem with the plate reflecting so much it's impossible to read. But I now have a bush near to the camera so the infrared light bounces off this bush making the camera image darken so I can read the number plates perfectly at night.

I didn't notice any impact to the power or data in my scenario due to the patch panel. It is a possible point of failure but also helps clean things up and keep things organized.

Thanks for checking out my video. There is no lost signal or lag using a patch panel. I would recommend getting a 16ch unit instead of running 2 8ch units... unless you can fit more hard drive space into the 2 8ch units and you need that extra storage.

Is cat 6 cable all the same? Where do you get yours, there seems to be cable from $90 to $225 for 1000' rolls. I read some is solid and some is braided do you have a preference?

The link for mine is in the video's description. There are different quality notes, like sure copper or just copper coated. There is a difference sometimes in the wire gauge. I prefer the thicker stuff at 23AWG, instead of 24.

Hi, I am trying to add junction box to my reolink cameras. I bought the same ones you are using but having troubles with the screws. They stick out cause the heads are too big. Did you use different screws?

Hey. I had the same issue, so I used a larger drill bit (the same width of the screw heads) to make the holes in the cover a just a couple millimeters deep so the screw heads will be flush with the cover.

If you have really bright lights that would allow the cameras to get color photos that might be ok, but you would have to deal with the time it takes for the camera to adjust from the night mode to the lights coming on. You may also have issues with reflections from bright spot lights. I don't think it's a bad idea, but you may have to do some tweaking and adjusting. Another option is to get a remotely located IR emitter - they generally provide much more IR light than the camera does. Added bonus, camera doesn't get covered in bugs.

Good question, there was obviously a lot of work done off-camera. In total, I spent 10 hours on the wiring alone. I made a bunch of mistakes along the way and had to redo a bunch of stuff, but this video only shows final product. I ended up doing the patch panel 3 times because the wires wouldn't line up correctly, that's why there are 2 holes cut behind the panel, they would not fit on the sides. Hope this helps.

How do the (PoE) cameras get power when they're plugged into the patch panel?

Why did you go with reolink vs hikvisions ? Are you looking at moving to a standalone all in one nvr verses the blueiris machine ?

Good question. I find the genuine Hikvision cameras a little harder to find because they only have a very select list of distributers. The Reolink cameras are on Amazon and on reolink.com, and much and quicker to get my hands on. I also like their marketing and feel they have a strong position in the market. I am still running Hikvision and Blue Iris and I have videos in the works on each.

@@HomeTechDIY I have been using "gray market" hik's from what i find to be a reputable seller on ebay. No issues with them so far. I am still on the fence however weather dropping nearly $400-500 on a hikvision DS-7716 NVR or building a BI machine.

Yeah, it's a tough call. If you are installing more than 4 cameras, you'll want a beefy PC... which translates into money spent on better performing hardware.

@@QuaabQueb You can definitely find better prices for a DS-7716 (or OEM equivalent) on eBay. You shouldn't be paying more than $200 if you know where to look. There are 70+ companies that rebrand Hikvision products. I'd highly recommend looking into some of those OEM products on eBay, as you can find the exact same NVRs and cameras at a fraction of the cost.

Are these cameras the 4K 8MP or 12MP? The reason I ask is your recordings are smooth and don't show and jitter. I think the 12MP have a slower frame rate and could be a problem, so I am assuming your cameras are the 8MP.

Good question. Officially, it's 100m, but as you may have seen in my past videos (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eaqhjdZmsprNZKc.html) we can achieve lengths much greater. I have not yet tested the maximum functional length from the NVR to the camera.

I am runing outdoor rated cat6a cable, so not worry about the moisture. The pvc is more for aesthetic than cable protection. What do you think?

I love my Reolink 4k with NVR but they need to improve on the field of view , that 89 degree is terrible,it’s way too narrow. My logi-2 web cameras that I swapped out had 180 degrees. Reolink we need at least 120.

I installed the exact same system and it works perfectly. My apartment block is in New York, and I watch the system from London. The only problem I have is installing additional cameras. The system see the cameras but will not allow me to add it to the system, Reolink support is awful.

Are you adding the cameras directly to the PoE ports on the camera or over your LAN? Not sure what you mean by the system can see the camera but you cannot add them to the system. Are you able to see the cameras' live feed on the NVR itself and not over the Reolink app?

hi !! good videos !! my point is this you have reviewed many reolink products and i bought a cheaper RLC 410 which is ok ! and hard wired it too !! picked up all from your vids ! my now point is could you recommend an IP camera there are lots to confuse you- spec looking for wired /2way audio /light /infrared / SD card / if its possible all thoughts considered BOB

I find the genuine Hikvision cameras a little harder to find because they only have a very select list of distributers. The Reolink cameras are on Amazon and on reolink.com, and much and quicker to get my hands on. I also like their marketing strategy and feel they have a strong position in the market. I am still running Hikvision and Blue Iris and I have videos in the works on each.

I just can’t understand the need for that panel? If the wire is coming straight from camera to NVR, why the panel is needed?

Technically it's not needed but if I want to install additional cameras in the future I only need to run the wires to the patch panel. This would be even more challenging once my ceiling is finished and covered in drywall.

What you could do is swap the angles of the garage and drive cameras so they're shooting perpendicular to each other, that way you shouldn't have to move the drains and you should maintain good IR images.

@@HomeTechDIY No problem, I tackle issues like that installing cameras pretty much monthly. Usually, it just takes a bit of fiddling in order to sort common issues like that.

I see snow. I am in Canada and would like to know how cold it gets where you are. We can count on at least two weeks of -30 to -40 degrees C in the winter. Have you had any cold weather problems? Camera failure, condensation, etc.?

I'm in Alberta. It was about -25 last night and I had no issues. I've used other Reolink cameras in -40 and they were a little sluggish and some ghosting at night but no major issues.

Hello. This is a late reply but I also live in a very cold province (Montreal, Quebec) and we have -25 and sometime -40 with the wind chill. Never had a single issue with all my 8 Reolink cameras (RLC-820A). It's up there since October 2020. So 3 winters already. Hope that helps.
