In 2007, Kara Kopetsky of Belton, Missouri, never returned home from school, sending her friends and family into a panic. When Kopetsky disappeared, the community was left searching for answers. Local police indicated that she had run away, delaying investigative efforts in the early days of her disappearance. However, days turned to weeks and Kopetsky never returned home. Her family and the community of Belton never gave up the search, holding annual rallies to remind people that they wanted justice for Kara.
Over the next decade, police and the FBI continued to receive reports about a person of interest, Kylr Yust. Although multiple reports and tips were made to police, they never had enough evidence to make an arrest and the case went unsolved. That is until 2016, when another young woman, 21-year-old Jessica Runions, was reported missing after being seen leaving a party with Kylr Yust...

Belton is in Missouri. Missouri cops are stupid and incompetent. I'm in Overland Park, only a few miles from Belton. After Tara went missing, there was a HUGE sign offering a reward for her whereabouts. Once she was found, the sign was taken down and the area where she was found(I'm assuming), there's a small memorial dedicated to her and Jessica, not far from the Union cemetery on a country highway.

the guy comes off very lowly to me and absolutely devoid of shame in his own acctions. arrogant in his views towards his actions as if he thinks he is a big dog for killing women. I am no saint myself man. Not going to details but i have done things i will go to hell for if it exists but i try to better myself and move past it and make things right. Like if the guy got into a shootout with a drug dealer or gang then bragged about it at least i could respect it like he defended himself and he was at risk, but this dude straight up preyed on nearly defensless women and thinks he is cool for it. that's bitch shit bro, this guy will take it up the ass in prison or get stomped out like pedophiles do. In 27 years as a True Crime addict, I've seen books and videos in the genre deteriorate from factual documentaries to virtual Soap Operas where its more about the forever crying and blubbering of the victim's family than it is about the details of the crime itself. Videos like this one, however, have redeemed my faith in True Crime. It's much more personal than the old factual documentaries, yet it involves those left behind into the narrative of the crime rather than making them mere sobbing talking heads. Videos like this one are an advancement to this journalistic art form.

If a person comes into a police dept with enough concern to want to report a loved one missing, what gives law enforcement the right to determine that its probably a runaway & not any real priority?? The person reporting them missing obviously knows them well enough to know something is wrong yet so many times law enforcement (from various depts across the country & every state) have reacted in this manner ocer & over. Are they ever held accountable for their actions or is it a "do as I say, not as I do" type thing,? Most times the missing person is unfamilar to law enforcement. So who would know more about what behavior is normal & what is not concerning them, a total stranger or a loved one?? While I know there are many in law enforcement that go far & above in their jobs to keep us safe, laws upheld & ensure justice is served & its awful that all too often they are judged unfairly by those that shouldnt ever be in a position of authority & higher responsibility. My comment is not intended for these stellar men & women who risk their lives daily for us. For them, I have nothing but acknowledgement, appreciation & the upmost respect. My comment is directed at anyone in law enforcement who has reacted to a person filing a missing person report in a manner that it was'nt of the highest priority. Its for those who will always support the theory of a crime that is the one that creates the least amount of effort & input on their part. I cant be the only one who wonders why things like this are "allowed" to continually go on with the very people we automatically trust, respect & obey can I?? One time is one time too many, but routinely is totally unacceptable.

I stopped working for an agency that automatically enters all missing juveniles as "runaways." They're going to do that to the wrong family someday and get eaten alive for it. I could not, in good conscience, comply with this rule. I think all missing persons are supposed to be entered into the system within a specific time frame and agency compliance and comments need to be evaluated.

I was about 7 when Kara went missing. One house on our drive to the store had a HUGE banner up in their yard for at least 5 years (which is when we changed out route). My mom watched a lot of crime shows around me so I was always super aware of it. As soon as I found out she had a boyfriend I suspected, and then my brother told me some of his friends knew Kylr and he told me rumors. And then when Jessica disappeared, I was about 15. A bunch of my friends knew her, my brother went to school with her, everybody was very angry for a full month, they held fundraisers and campaigns in the cafeteria. The energy the day they found the bones felt freaking amazing. I just think it's telling that elementary school children, stoners, anime nerds, people who'd only lived in town for about a year, all figured it out pretty much as soon as they heard about Kylr's existence. Literally as soon as we heard he was the last person seen with Jessica it was over for him. We just needed a mushroom hunter to get a little curious.

I live in Kansas City Missouri. Not far from Belton Missouri. In fact my son lives in Belton. This story hit hard with the area. It was sad to know that both girls died and that evil monster killed them both. The only thing good I can say about this case is that atleast now the parents and family now what happened to them and who killed their daughters. And that so called justice was served. However...as a parent, I don't think justice would ever be served no matter the sentence of years or of death. Because it would never bring my daughter back. My heart goes out to all the families. All 3 families. They ALL lost a loved one.

The most frustrating thing regarding Law is the "proven beyond reasonable doubt". And then there's the shameless heartless lawyer who take advantage of it, who would challenge, object everything whenever possible. The monster could've even won the case. In this murder case, there's no forensic evidence, which is really troublesome. Fortunately, the circumstantial evidence are strong. So the verdict is, sadly, the best outcome. It's far from justice. I'd say if the criminals taking advantage of the law like this then maybe it's time for public Justice, like someone take him out and make it like a suicide just like he did to his step brother.

These cops who instantly say PROBABLY ran away need to get a different job .. unless there's signs pointing to that then let's not do that please. They sound as awful as ones who say ohh u can't file a missing persons report until 48 hrs has passed. U might as well be on the killers side at that point.

I remember this story from years ago, but I didn’t know their remains were found. I’m glad the girls family were able to bring them home for a final burial. Now they can have closure. I don’t think anyone can heal from such a tragedy.💔💔💔

These families don't ever get closure. Just able to give their loved one a memorial. We call it closure to make ourselves feel better, and IMO, it's rather selfish.

@@lisamarieashby2523The families at least don't have to wonder where in the world their daughter is. They have a place to go to visit instead of the girl's remains out in exposure.

The trouble I have , is the lack of urgency to find children who were suspected of running away to begin with. Even if police have every reason to believe that child left on their own accord , finding that child safe , and re-uniting them with their family should have the same priority as any other missing child's case does. Runaways are endangered children. It's a fecking blessing when that child is found just hiding out at freinds house safe and unharmed. Who gives a flick if 7 out of 10 come home two days later and it's discovered they were just upset because they got grounded for a weekend. Whatever resources used to find these children aren't being wasted. Im sure there are people who would argue the point otherwise, but by all means before you do , go to the national website of missing and exploited children... look at all those faces looking back at you, page after page after page ... of children that have never been found , and their families will probably never see again. IF police treating every report of a missing child the same way , could have prevented one or two of those families the anguish of spending years /lifetimes not knowing what happened to their child, I would say that was resources very well spent.

It always annoys me when people try to report a missing teenager and the police go “they are a runaway, they’ll be back”. Regardless if they are a runaway or not, it’s someone below the age of 18, so surely the police must be concerned about their welfare.

My children Holly and Brandon went to Belton High School with Kara. We knew Kylr did something to her. No one had an issue with her except her ex boyfriend Kylr Yurst. He already tried to kill her once before by choking her and threatening he was going to kill her. She was set to get a permanent restraining order against him in the Cass County court house but he killed Kara and dumped her body near Cleveland, Missouri where I have family out in the rural countryside. Fortunately, a mushroom hunter found Jessica Runions and a further search of the area Kara's remains were also discovered. Miracle's do happen. The investigation was not taken seriously and lead's that could have led to be solved or lead to Kylr's arrest preventing Jessica Runions homicide also committed by KY. Jessica lived in our new hometown of Raymore. Every year there was a walk through town remembering Kara and when she was found it was the biggest relief I've ever felt when the monster was found guilty and sentenced to 45 year's in state's prison. The jury was incredible with the trial and how they saw the truth.

OMG those poor families. The police don't verify TYLER'S alibi at the nursing home, they don't get the video tape, they don't do follow up interview with the clerk and then they lost track of him. What did they do? That other girl would be alive. Then the jury convicts him on involuntary even though he killed her the day after she files a restraining order. This was a good episode but it made me angry.

No it's not. To prove someone is guilty you need to prove beyond reasonable doubt. You don't punish people because it's more likely than not. The real villains here, beside Kylr Yust, is the police who missed chances in both cases to nail Yust.
