@Total Confusion That's a ridiculous comment. What happens behind this scenes, is we can't keep up with everyone. You answer one question and then they multiply. Like the scene in Bruce Almighty when he's answering emails? It is exactly like that. But I do care, whether someone is a paid member of my website or not.

@Dave Osbun you won't be disappointed with AESwave! In fact I'd like to add to it, one, just to stick it to the wet blanket comment below, and two because I do this all the time. I'd like to offer you and SD/AES Grant to shop with them. All of my affiliate revenue earned from AES is being dumped into an account where we give back to our industry. Whatever I offer from this account AES matches dollar for dollar. Copy your message and then mine right here, and send it to support@scannerdanner.com and I'll set you up with one. Merry Christmas my friend and thank you for your support!

@Total Confusion I'm not sure why expecting to earn money with your knowledge means you don't care about people. In fact, I'd say just the opposite is true. I'm sure it's safe to say you've never visited the premium channel nor have you viewed any of the content there. It's free for 14 days...check it out for yourself and cancel it at the end of 14 days. Then see if you can come back and make the same ridiculous comment with a straight face. You cannot find better training than what is offered there for the minuscule amount he charges. A few years back I signed up for the premium with the intent on watching and canceling because I'm cheap. I'm still a premium member today. I have earned TONS more money with the knowledge I've gained than I could possibly pay Paul Danner for his premium channel in a lifetime. I'm an amateur doing repairs and diagnostics as a side job to my regular job and have fixed cars that local shops couldn't fix, all thanks to the premium channel. Also, if you paid any attention you see that much of the proceeds he earns from certain things go straight to people in need. So, you're just wrong about Paul Danner. He expects to get paid for his knowledge but he cares and is also a very generous Christian. He's a winner in my book.

I owned this car with the same engine 3.5L V6 except mine was a 2008. I owned it since it was new from the dealer. I kept taking it back for this misfire issue and they kept telling me I was crazy. Come to find out, the VCM feature (variable cylinder management) shuts off the rear bank of Cylinders in 3 cyl or 4 cyl mode. If you check all 3 rear cylinders all the spark plugs will be fouled but the front is clean. This fouling problem happens on highway driving or coasting when cylinders are deactivated to save fuel. However the intake valves still open, thus EGR pumps soot and oil into the rear bank fouling the plugs but never burning the recirculating exhaust gases. So my solution was a cheaper 2 year spark plug change and I never had a misfire for the life of ownership. As soon as I saw this video I knew what it was because I owned this car for so long before selling it. It's not a horrible issue if you just keep up maintenence on the spark plugs. The engine never burned any oil, it was simply a problem with the VCM feature from Honda. Honda even provided a software update to help the issue. I never tried it. I'm not a mechanic so I didn't bother with it.

You got it. Also, echo comes on when it comes up to temp. A mode to trick the temp reading by reading the hose temp instead so echo never comes on. 5 degree temp change read will do it.

Hey, enjoyed the video. That Honda needs a VCM muzzler and of course a set of plugs. It has cylinder deactivation on cyls 1,2,3, it seems that it creates a vacuum in those cylinders pulling more oil in and oil fouling the plugs... keep up the great work Paul and Caleb, I guess Danner deserves some praise as well.

It's not just Honda. I've run into the issue with many manufacturers that have cylinder deactivation. I think it is not only the added vacuum but also low tension rings you see going in most engine's in an effort to reduce drag. All in the name of fuel economy.

I put a VCM Muzzler on my 2006 Odyssey and I love it. Installed at 163k. The issue I had was it felt like a trans mis-shift that occurred every time you came up to speed. In fact I hated to see the green econo light come on. Right after installing the Muzzler I did an oil change and discovered shiny metal in the oil. Tore the engine down and discovered front camshaft lobes were worn (163k) and 2 rod halves and 1 main half bearings were showing wear. Rear cam looked like new so did not change. Changed the cam ($300) and the bearings. Trying to figure out size/color of the bearings was a real hassle. Dealer totally worthless. So far so good. The engine always ran quiet so no change still runs great. Have not pulled plugs. Just got the Odyssey at 161k and it does not appear to use oil. So do not know history before I got it. I think the previous owner sold it because every warning light was one when I first started it. All easy fixes. TPMS/Traction was low tire pressure (nail in tire) and the check engine light was caused by a clogged screen on the VVT soldenoid. I bet the owner was not savvy and the $700 Toyota wanted for the new valve did him in. I fixed the screen for $10.

great conclusion, i hope the customer not pissed to find out it was a plug. And get bent out of shape, for your charge for the diagnosis. My advice to him it better have 6 extra new plugs on hand, or the owner can get those non foulers/maybe hotter plugs too. I used the non foulers on a 80 POS malibu i had with a 229 V6 it had they do work!! Same thing that engine would blow through oil like crazy.

It probably wanted to start the procedure from a stopped engine to take full control of the fuel delivery (or place it in open loop) preventing the fuel trims from going lean creating a false positive stumble. It might be that from an open loop on a cold engine, it can prevent it from going in closed loop and adjusting the fuel but once ots warm and in closed loop, it has to take it from start-up. They had it running for a while and there didn't seem to be any trouble codes that would keep the ecm from going closed.

Strategically placed SnapOn ad (truck) in the background. Paul is selling out, lol. Good quick diagnosis Paul. When you first started the engine you said "that's a secondary ignition". So, what was it that you noticed? What did you feel/hear/whatever? How did you know it wasn't fuel? I'm trying to learn these insights.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 2 жыл бұрын
Initially it wasn't constant. It only misfired on a snap throttle, which is a classic secondary ignition issue. I dont think the video captured that or I forgot to mention that it was not constant at first. A constant misfire is a little more tricky if that makes sense

Never knew the cylinders on this were numbered this way. Like Ford Triton. Low tech way to know: unplug first and last cylinders for one bank and check scan tool.

Back in my younger years when engines and ignition systems were less hi-tech we saw a lot of worn out engines with this kind of issue on a weekly basis, in those times common trick was to fit a hotter (sometimes called a softer) spark plug. We would replace say an Champion N9Y with an N12Y as a short term fix.

That was the first thing I was going to suggest. It's worked for me many times.

They also used to make a sleeve you could screw the plug into then install the whole thing. The sleeve shrouded the spark plug shielding it from the oil. You would have to periodically clean the sleeve though but you didn't go through plugs as fast. It likely wouldn't work on an coil over plug scenario though.

Good video with a good mix of high tech and old school diagnosis. Like you said no reason to rebuild the engine for a little oil burning... How about more old school on the plug and take it for a ride and drive it like you stole it for a mile or two. It might clear out the plug. I had a family member with a early 70s Mopar 440 and I'd get a call that it was running rough. I'd take it out on the highway and let it breathe if you know what I mean and bring it back purring like a kitten. That car was insane LoL

I own a 2006 Honda Odyssey with this same engine. I purchased it brand spanking new. I am anal when is comes to maintenance so bad that I change oil in my cars every 3,500 miles or 3 months. So as I noticed that this engine would burn oil about 3/4 quart every 3,500 miles even while using synthetic. So I always checked the oil. Then at about 60,000 miles I heard about a device called VCM muzzler. I got one on Ebay that you solder together and put it on the car. It stops the VCM from engaging. The kit I got comes with several resistors and a suggestion on the ambient temp and resistor combo to use. I live in an area where the winters are mild but the summers can get hot. The resistor lowers the voltage back to the VCM so it will not engage unless the engine temp gets to 180 degrees. Your temp guage will show that the engine is running a little cooler. For me it stops the VCM 95 percent of the time from engaging. Oh I have changed the spark plugs at 65k and at 120 k and no black soot on spark plugs. If you use too high of resistance you will get a check engine light. When installing the muzzler you must install it when the engine is cold.

Agree on this oil burning.Repace the plug and let go to the end.Issue will come again and is cheaper to overhaul or replace an engine.

I'm a Honda Tech based out of Cincinnati. Was REALLY hoping it wasn't going to be a oil fauled spark plug. Unfortunately, I see that a few times a week. Just in the past few weeks, I've had to replace piston rings on 3 different Odysseys, 2 of which were for the second time in the vehicle's life. It's a real issue, without a good solution.
