I've been looking at people on the Africa Twin for some time now and thought how awesome do they look. Did some research and from what I could see, it was a bike that suited me pretty well.
Yesterday was the day. I managed to get on a test ride of the Africa Twin Adventure Sport. It did not disappoint.
The DCT is something else, I was very sceptical at first and didn't know what was what, but a few miles in and it becomes second nature. It got me thinking, why have a manual bike at all now!
This bike can handle it all, and do it to the limit.
Hope you enjoy this first ride review, on what I think is the best bike I've ever ridden!

I have come from a BMW 1250 GS to the Africa Twin Adventure Sport DCT ES, I have had the bike for just under 12 months, absolutely love it, the more I ride it, the more it impresses me. It's a great machine, I use it for touring, and with DCT it's a very relaxed way of riding. It has exceeded my expectations, and it's black!!

Seems the colour comments got people talking, the more I look the more I think I may prefer the black over the white… just something about that white is 👌 What made you switch from the GS?

@@myadventuremoto9902 I did love my GS it's a great bike and i can't really fault it, I have had several GS's and GSA's over the years. The first thing that attracted me to the ATAS was the DCT, it's something I fancied trying and I really like it, you can let it do it's own thing ( i ride in sports 2 mode) or you can interact with it at any point to suit your riding style, i like the looks of the bike, it has plenty of power for my needs and overall i think it is good value for money. I have fitted a separate GPS, Denali lights, touratech luggage and crash bars and it works nicely for me. Only down side, the wind noise from the screen, it's not a big problem and it seems a common complaint with owners.

I suffer from carpel tunnel in both hands and also have a pinched nerved in my shoulder which travels down my left arm after multiple surgeries I can no longer ride my 2 x YZF R6's (2006 & 2019) without excruciating pain and so have moved on to Africa DTC. I am just so happy this bike lets me be on 2 wheels again.

I purchased my first Africa Twin in 2017 and the DCT was a game changer for me. I spent a couple of years putting the bike through its paces, mostly on back country roads and light off-road adventures. Last year I added the Africa Twin Adventure Sport DCT ES for longer routes through the Rockies, Sawtooth, Cascade and Sierra Nevada ranges. Added Touratech crash bars and racks, Mosko Moto panniers and duffle, and Motoz Tractionator GPS tires. This is a very capable continental-crosser and a surprisingly nimble off-road machine. In addition to the myriad riding modes and suspension settings, the primary differentiation is the Dual Clutch gearbox. No matter what mode you are in, adjusting gears to suit the conditions is a mere thumb flick away for instant, seamless shifting at any speed. I am always in Sport II or Sport III mode for maximum throttle responsiveness with longer gear sequencing to maximize the power band. Honda apparently perfected this technology in part from their experience in Formula 1 racing. It’s a very impressive combination of smooth power delivery through instantaneous and intuitive shifting, from a potent parallel twin with a 270 degree crank. I love the bike.

Personally I found it a lot to take in all at once - I'm coming up from a CB500 so maybe I should've gone along the route of 750 DCT first, I don't know, but going to such a big heavy bike plus having to figure out DCT was a lot. My instinct is if there's too much power to take it off with the clutch, and I'm really missing that manual clutch. What would really make it for me I think would be if they had the manual clutch lever still there, for low speed stuff, so you have that finesse, but it's not needed once you're up & running free, just for that slow speed stuff. Bret Tkacs says to use the rear brake as a kind of surrogate clutch - does the DCT's clutch disengage when you go light on the back, or do you have to really clamp that brake in with your foot to make it behave? I fell off first time riding as I overdid the throttle, grabbed for the clutch, panicked & grabbed brake which I never normally do, but I never normally ride without a clutch... I'm very wary now of the whisky throttle as there's seemingly no easy way to get out of that situation on a DCT.

The obvious answer of course is, ride it & see, but I'm in a close off a close, lined with expensive parked cars that belong to some pretty meaty neighbours who I'd rather stay on the right side of, so I'm kinda in a Catch-22 situation: I gotta get good at the bike to ride it, and I've gotta ride it to get good, starting from nowhere with it.

Me and buds have three, and all DCT. Electronic suspension is incredible. Soft compliant offroad, stiff non dive attitude on urban/touring. Adjust weigh capacity for panniers of passenger. These are all done in seconds through TFT or left buttons on the fly. Stellar! I can ride hiway onto Rockies forestry roads and have suspension dampening change by just toggling a button. Extremely noticable and sweet change in ride quality! DCT is wonderful. Stuck in city traffic, no constant clutch/brake crap anymore. Offroad, just run manual levers, or over ride auto whenever you feel need with levers. It's the most compliant trans for how you feel like riding at the time. Lazy, just let the bike do the shifting. Spirited, take control of trans. Android auto, Cardo, phone comms work wonderful on this bike. Packs multi week gear like a champ, and gets 450-500 km when touring per tank. 18000 km and extremely satisfied. I'll be buying another, in a couple years, my buds ( MX and Baja racers) also. Thanks for sharing your experience, glad you liked it, and cheers from Canada ehhh 🇨🇦

Hi Bill. Thanks for the comment. Love what you’ve said, it really does seem like a perfect do everything. If I was looking for more of an off-road bike, I wouldn’t be too keen on the DCT, but for what I do 70/30 road off-road, I think the DCT would be great. Eehhhhh 🇨🇦

Love the DCT (49 years of continuous riding) owned 36 other bikes through the years. I do carry a “Moto Jack” with me that I’ve had to use it. 😂🎉 27,xxx miles and still going strong. It takes a good month to really understand the DCT and maximize its capabilities. I with they had a AT 500cc with DTC!

My husband and I have both an Africa Twin. Mine is from 2019 manual which I ride with a length of only 5.2 and it's not lowered. My husband rides a regular 1100 from 2021 with DCT. The DCT is a self learning system. You can always overrule the gear it choses and in time it learns your riding style. Even though my husband almost always ride it manually. We did decide to put on a lot of aftermarket stuff. Like full custom suspension (including the shock) from Hyperpro. Crash bars from Outback Mototek. Barkbuster handguards. Pivot pegs. Pro oiler system for the chain on GPS. Etc. As for soft luggage we went for Mosko Moto Reckless R80. But only due to the fact that we wanted something that we could easily switch to our lighter Enduro bikes. Two Suzuki DRZ 400. If that wasn't the case, we would have chosen for the panniers of Mosko Moto with a separate duffle on top.

Cool review. I've always been into BMW GS 1250, but since I've tried Honda AT, no turning back. Very balanced bike, as a form factor and as a concept. DCT technology is amazing, freeing your mind and hands, enjoying the ride without thinking about changing gears (especially in traffic jam). Love the branding too, "Africa twin" name shows its roots immediately, call for dreaming about wild roads. Very cool machine.

Actually decided myself on an Africa twin just recently. I am coming from a sportsbike, and was looking for something capable of traveling (including 2-up), commuting comfortably also in winter, more comfortable riding position and possibility of playing offroad. First bikes to go off my list were the ninja 1000sx, gsx1000gt, versys and v-strom due to practically no offroad capabilities. Next to go were the KTM, BMW and Husqvarna after hearing of their relatively poor reliability, dealership experiences and limited network. Also a lot of the models I didnt consider due to the high weight. This left for me personally the T7, T7 world raid, standard AT and ATAS. I booked a test ride on the T7 and standard AT (with DCT). T7WR was/is not available to test ride in my country yet. Both are incredibly good bikes and amazing. After riding the standard version, I was immediately convinced not to go for the ATAS. The standard is already plenty heavy, which definitely can impact offroad and lowspeed handeling. I also opted not to go for the DCT, to save cost, weight and I just like shifting. I did go for a quickshifter though. Also, standard suspension seemed to work brilliantly for me, and has plenty of adjustment. As for the AT vs T7, cant go wrong with either. The T7 feels more off-road oriented, super playful and fun without all the electronic faff. This comes at the cost of probably not being as good to tour on with pillion. Also the finish on the AT made me choose that instead. Not that the T7 is badly finished, its fine, but the AT is just that step above, you really do see the extra cost. The T7 also felt kind of vague on the road, hard to get the bike where you want it due to soft springs. This is probably fixable relatively easily. The AT felt very neutral and super easy to steer in comparison. Considering I do most of my kms on the road most likely with some off road play, it makes more sense to opt for the more road biased AT. I can see that if you wont go off-road at all the ATAS might make even more sense.

Awesome comment! Thank you The T7 is a bike I really want to get on. Yamaha do an off road day here on them which would be awesome. What you described is what I do basically, 70% on road and a bit of off road play - nothing too serious. I love my KTM for that, it lets me do it all.

I have been on the CRF1100L for over a year now, and have mixed feelings about the bike. Electronic suspension is amazing, but all other electronic controls seem wildly over complicated. Apple CarPlay is very unreliable on this bike. I think a bike like this is not served well by a 21 inch front tire, because it’s too heavy a bike for really technical terrain and the 21 inch front wheel is not the best performer on windy, paved roads. The adventure sports model rides like two different bikes above and below 10 mph. It is incredibly top-heavy with a full tank of gas, and slow speed maneuvers can be a real challenge especially on technical terrain. Once the thing gets above 10 miles an hour though it is a very stable ride.

What a very enthusiastic review, I considered this bike a while back, even put a deposit down. It feels quite top heavy when stopped, anyway I stalled and ended up buying my Yamaha FZ1-S Custom. It's a beautiful bike, very quick off the mark and handles pretty well but I've now decided that I don't need two sports orientated bikes. The ZZR's a keeper so I'm selling the FZ1-S to fund my 890 Adv R. I thought actually you might make more of a comparison of the two, choosing between which will be a difficult decision for many. My new channel is up and running Grey Wolf, I'll sub to you from it too so I can follow you whichever channel I'm posting on 👍

I have a 2019 AT DCT. Bought it new and it's just brilliant. No, you can't do power wheelies in 3rd gear like on a GS1250 but there is plenty of grunt to get a wriggle on and it's more than fast enough for me. I love the sound, the look, riding position etc. Tyre choice is important to get the best out of it.

I own a 2020 Africa Twin DCT (non-AS). This is my first adventure bike - I used to ride a Triumph Daytona 675r and a Kawasaki z800 previously. It's certainly heavy but all that weight magically disappears as soon as you get it moving. It's deceptive in a weird way - be cautious. I do however love the stability & ride quality. The DCT on this gen of AT (with the 6 axis IMU) are lovely & intuitive. I'd say 80-90% of the times, the bike is in the correct gear. The low end torque is addictive - no Supersport by any measure, but for a 40+ guy, this is plenty. The riding posture is very relaxed & the built quality is right on the money. After suffering from a bad slipped disc, this is possibility the most comfortable I've felt riding on a motorcycle. So far, I'm loving it. Yes - it's probably a a boring Honda (as many would say) - but this is all the bike that I need & its capabilities far surpass what I will ever demand from it. No premium fuel etc required - this would happily accept as low as 87 octane which is insane (should your adventures ever take you far & beyond).

@@hulkhogan9450 I absolutely miss my 675R. But the AT is wayyyy more comfy to ride on longer hauls. Personally, I do miss the drama. The Honda is just a bit dull on that front. But it sure makes up for that with reliability. What would intimidate the most is the size and weight compared to a supersport. No getting around that. To be honest even a Transalp 750 would suffice for long comfy rides. The AT comes into its own when the tarmac ends.

Having to wire a phone to a vehicle in order to get it working with Android Car or whatever is a PITA though: I have this in my Astra: there's a socket that can be used to charge the phone but the cubby it's in is just that little bit too small to fit a modern Android phone, and there's nowhere else to put it. What I've found is you plug it in, the vehicle's system recognises it, you put the phone where it needs to go & something disturbs the plug ever so slightly so the vehicle thinks it's no longer plugged in, so you pick the thing up & reseat the plug, put it back & it's unplugged again... I've given over using it since for most trips I do know where I'm going, but imagine that with a bike with wind and potholes jiggling the whole thing about. Once they get it onto Bluetooth only it'll be alright but forcing a wired connection, ugh, huge PITA.

As far as GPS mounts go there's nothing stock but you can get ones from Givi & Quadlock - my standard AT came (bought used) with a Givi crossbar mount that goes just above the TFT screen, but the previous owner had removed the clip part where your GPS or phone mounts. As it happens, Quadlock were having a sale over Christmas last year so I got their wing mirror mount, which goes perfectly well with the Givi crossbar, so I can have my GPS on my phone directly above the TFT - and no need for it to be using Android Mobile or whatever it's called.

I recently swapped in my softail sport glide for the KTM 890 adventure r. Loved my harleys, and still do.. one of my favourite bikes, I will have another at some point. These ADV bikes are something different though, do everything so well and maximum comfort

Yeah, but a lot of ADV bikes have a bracket for a traditional GPS system. Maybe the Africa twin has one, I’m not sure.

The one thing you need to remember especially when forking out so much $$ on a bike is that in 10 to 30 years from now the AT will still be on the road chewing up miles with no major mechanical issues. BMW, KTM etc can’t say that. BMW has known drivetrain and frame issues which are no cheap fixes and KTM build quality is sub par at best. If I’m spending that kind of money I want to know I’ll be riding that bike into the grave.

Good comment. I do love my KTM and only had it 6 months or so, so can’t comment on that :-) The AT seemed to be built like a tank and could take a beating

Well that may be true of the mechanical components, the jury is definitely still out around all of the electronics. We will have to see whether or not the already finicky CarPlay will be relevant in 10 years, and if the Showa suspension still works.

Once you’ve ridden the GS you’ll need to amend your ‘best bike I’ve ridden’ I suspect… It’s not perfect, but it’s not far off.

Hello Timothy I'm going to make a hard assumption that you've never ridden a DCT AT. Accordingly, I understand that you love the GS. I was lucky enough to ride a GS 1250 Adventure and an AT 2021 DCT Adventure Sports on the same day. The GS with shift assist. You can read my personal opinion between the lines. Now I do not regret my purchase decision for a second. Have a good ride with your GS. Greetings and accident-free ride Thomas

I haven’t, but I’m just not a fan. I’m definitely not closed-minded, as I would like to ride the DCT at some point. My issue isn’t with DCT (it actually sounds quite an interesting concept) it’s with the Africa Twin and Honda in general. The 1250GS is pretty much the perfect tour/adventure motorcycle but I don’t actually own one. The KTM 1290 SA-R is more up my street, so that’s what I went for.

@@timothydubber549 I was very disappointed with the GS after the test drive. Everyone praises the machine, but most of them are actually just lovers of German work. I noticed a lot compared to Japanese quality. 1. the play of all moving parts in more than the desired direction. 2. the switching operations without clutching resembles a crossing of a 20cm high rootstock. 3. the engine was the only one which was very powerful. (Whereas the AT with DCT has not less pull). 4. by the smaller wheels compared to the AT a little more agile on the road, but in the gravel with larger pieces of stone very overwhelmed. All in all, I am not a lover of mainstream vehicles, which should be good from the hear say. All in all, a good vehicle for road travel. However, definitely far from "almost perfect". Since the egg-laying Woll milch sow is already closer to the perfect travel machine for all territories. I hope here no one to be driven to the leg. Each machine has its advantages and lovers.
