My stalwart 6th gen Accord's 160k transmission has begun showing symptoms of its engineered flaws--specifically being prone to overheating due to restrictions. I'll likely be performing a similar rebuild, though with the BX7A "upgrade kit" that supposedly fixes every design flaw and makes this transmission bullet proof. I'm considering drilling a hole thru the main case at the sump directly beneath the screen on the internal filter for the exclusively for the purpose of having access to the screen to clean it periodically.

Keep me informed on how that works out for you. Thanks for watching.

I think most of these units problems must stem from poor valve body castings. I have a 98 Accord 2.3 with the BAXA transmission. It has always been sort of a project car. I got it with 230k miles for $200 dollars, and the engine purred like a kitten, it just wouldn't move, I think the torque converter had grenaded. I got a low miles JDM tranny and put in it. Anyhow, it has 254k on it now, and it's starting to give problems. Yesterday, when I was headed to the store, I left my house, and went about 3/4 of a mile, and when the TCC went to lock up, the car just started coasting and didn't respond when I hit the throttle. I pulled over and it stalled the engine out. I started it back up it seemed ok and made it back to the house. It doesn't have any trouble codes yet, but I'm expecting a P0740 code soon, not sure if that is a 2 trip code. I'm a pretty good mechanic and engine builder, but I'm just not sure I have the confidence to try and rebuild the unit myself, and I don't wanna put a new converter in if it's just going to burn out again from the underlying problem.

They don't have valve body problems like I think you are thinking. They do have end plug problems. Sonnax makes a repair kit. You will need 2 of them to do all the plugs. There is only 1 that you cannot replace. The real problem is the radiator. When the converter fails it plugs up the intercooler. You cannot flush it out, and don't let anyone tell you you can. Replace the radiator and install a auxiliary cooler in parallel not series and your converter will last. Assuming it's built correctly.

Thanks for showing me that I don't want to try this. I will be trying a GPLA, but this looks much more difficult. You professionals sort of make it look easy, but I know that's not the case. Mine seems to shift ok, but slips badly when giving it much throttle.

Don't recall having done one of those yet. Good luck on your build. Thanks for watching.

I will be using this video as reference in the next couple of days on my 98 Accord EX. Thank you for this. I was sold a "rebuilt" transmission that runs amazing in the forward direction. Reverse makes a horrific grinding sound and does not engage. Neutral and park will make the same sound but a lot more quiet if you switch to P or N after you try to engage reverse. D4, D3, 2 and 1 make no sounds whatsoever. This sounds like such a specific issue, but I have not had any luck asking around. Any idea?

Hope it helps. Probably the slider and/or hub for reverse is upside down. Thanks for watching.

I’ve got the same transmission, 2nd n 3rd gear decided to stop working after use, started with 2nd gear jerking and clunking and 20k miles later, no more 2nd or 3rd gear. Goes in 2nd then slips out and doesn’t engage. Nightmare of a transmission, a ticking time bomb. My current situation

If you had replaced the dual linear solenoid when you first started having problems you might have saved your transmission. As it stands now you will need a rebuild. If you do replace the Linear solenoid do yourself a favor and get OEM. All the aftermarket ones I have seen either do not work out of the box or fail quickly.

@@CurmudgeonTransmissionwould you recommend a shop rebuilding my transmission or using my own shop at my college to rebuild it? I honestly think it’s salvageable, barely hit 150k miles, I drove the car 30k miles, it had about 120k miles when I got it. It’s a 2000 accord v6 sedan

They are interesting to build if you have the confidence to do it. Kind of a cross between an automatic and a standard. If you don't want to do it go here to find a shop near you. atra.com/ShopFinder
