In this video I finally hear this baby V-twin roar but not before spending 2 days troubleshooting the loom only to find the ignition switch loom was messed with. The carbs need a little more work as the bike is over-fueling but the engine sounds very good.

Make sure the carbs are properly jetted for the higher airflow resulting from the open exhaust and eventual sports filters. Only months ago a "properly tuned" NT650 I bought blew up in my face. Front cylinder: Valve stem broken, cylinderhead fully head shot, piston broken!

Oh wow that’s a good one. Yeah this is not jetted, I didn’t get that far: Honda Bros Snapped camshaft post mortem kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mLqqn7J2tJ6cqqc.html . I do agree that everything needs to be tuned right, for that I need to send it off to a dyno. But as you can see from the video, I only got an hour of low rpm driving before the camshaft snapped. Seems like this engine has a long history and I am just at the end of it. I have 2 other 400 engines here and a 650 in need of a new casing so I will get this going. But I am not investing anymore time into this one, there are a few issues there and I need to strip it to really figure it all out. Seems like a multi system failure 😞

Thanks, yeah this battery was excess to requirements. I got this for some other project a few years ago and it sat there in a press. At least the engine is ticking over now. Nearing the end now.

Thank you and great stuff, it’s hard to find an exhaust that looks well and doesn’t brake the bank and even if it does only last a few years, it’s easy and cheap to replace. I am not a fan of the straight can as it covers the wheel too much. This can is a little on the louder side, sounds like a much bigger bike. I only have a few small jobs to do and I can close it up. I was looking at a 650 like yours but I have limited space so would need to get rid of something. Anyway glad it helped you out.

I think I saw from another video you have airbox swapped for pods, did you have to change jets or anything else in carbs?

I left the standard filter on mine, but your right if you adjust the exhaust or filter, it’s best to get the jets done so it runs right

What's the exhaust brand for that? I recently got a Honda Bros nt400 same bike as yours but missing the muffler

Yes the muffler is usually rotten in these. I have a video there of how to fit this but it’s very much a custom job, required welding, grinding etc. If got looking at a bolt on job then try eBay: www.ebay.ie/itm/274401065694?hash=item3fe393fade:g:zjIAAOSwmOVh4XVu . Hi, I've just picked up a 88 bros 400 ..I was told it had an over heating problem. I just dumped the oil and its a milky light brown colour. No weeping from water pump, I took off the outer w.pump cover and no in out play on the shaft/impeller. Do these engines suffer from head gasket failure? It isn't smoking at all and runs well. Just overheating and the browny milky oil.

Not really, I have seen this before and it was due to the bike sitting up for years. I suggest do an oil change, top up the coolant. And run the bike for a few days. Thermostat is most likely dead, so for the moment you can just remove it. If the coolant disappears then the head gasket is definitely gone, but it’s easier to see on clean oil what’s going on. You can test the thermostat too, I have a video on this somewhere, but you just boil it and see if it opens up. Here is that video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gK9ympiEmafNomg.html

@@Yoke. I've just fitted a new thermostat, radiator and fan last night. I'll fill up with fresh coolant and oil/ filter today see how it runs. Oh one more thing ..the fuel pump doesn't seem to be kicking on, Is there a relay i can jump to test the pump? Looking forward to getting out on it for the 2 weeks of 🌞 here in Ireland 🇮🇪

@Green Mechanic Good stuff, see how you get on. Yeah the fuel pump is funny on the Bros, it only kick in while bike is running. Its not like say CBR600 or other bikes for that matter. Its pulsing the relay from the coil, so put your hand on it while the bike is ticking over. See diagram here hawkworks.net/manual/images/18/fuel-pump-wiring-diagram.jpg. Make sure the fuse is ok and the green cable with the loop is earthed. I can’t wait for our leader to lift that 5k, so I can insure the bikes again. You can only drive around in circles for so long.

@@Yoke. definitely head gasket or cracked water jacket, its bubbling hot water up out of the filler neck pretty vigorously and steaming(blow by/crankcase pressure) out of the oil fill cap when I open it whilst its running. I just collected another engine today, he says its burning oil. I'm not sure what way to approach now, do I just pull the top end off the new engine and plop it in the old engine in the bike? Or do I just rebuild the new engine top end with rings, stem seals....tricky. do you have a way i could get in contact to discuss 🤔

@Green Mechanic bloody hell, that’s a lemon they sold you so. Well, the rings wear to the cylinder so, I would go with option two, rebuild the top end with new rings. Also have a look at the new engine and make sure the sprocket splines are good on the new engine otherwise you will need to do the shaft too. Or there is option 3 , get a fully working one that you can hear running. But all this is going to get expensive . Is the rest of the bike in good shape, is it worth the hassle
