Codger Biker reflects on the ways of the universe and the role of an observer in a quantum reality. Oh and why he didn't get a Transalp.

The 500X is a great choice. A friend did a round the world trip on one with a few minor mods. Don't blame you for not wanting to be an early adopter. I was daft enough to buy one of the first Ducati Multistrada 1200S back in 2011..... what a nightmare. Rode a CB500X for a week on the island of Madeira, great bike.

Smart man and great video. So tired of all these KZfaqrs trying to convince their fans to buy the Transalp as a off-road bike. I would choose the CB500x all day over the TA. It’s literally the same size and really I don’t drive over 130kms an hour for more then sort burst so I don’t need any more power. The CB500x is the hidden gem in the Honda lineup. Cheers!

It's not such a small bike. 500cc admittedly outgunned, but it can make up time in the corners, or by not stopping for fuel all the time. Nice and steady is underated, especially when riding long distances 👍

Road bikes for over 50 years, never had a problem with tubed tires. Don’t even know anyone who had a blowout. I would think a blowout with a tubeless tire would be more dangerous but I don’t know since I never heard of a motorcycle tire “blowing out”. Had a few slow leaks. Let me know if blowouts are common and if so what causes them.

I have a similar problem to that you described as, after an unfortunate accident on my old 650 version last year, I had been waiting in anticipation for the release of the new 750 TransAlp, only to realise that it really is more a road touring model much like the CB500X despite the 21" front (a halfway house some may say), so I agree what's the point having tubed tyres? Sure the engine sounds like it has the goods, but that's about all it really has over little brother, and is that alone worth paying the extra? Also, anything 180+ kg is too heavy for proper offroad imo, that rules out even so-called 'mid weight' Adv bikes like the Tuareg, T7, TransAlp, CB500X, 790/890 Adv, for my level of rider skill at least. I have an old KLX400R for offroad (though would love a 690 Enduro R), so the solution is to have a second bike to ride on road 80-90% of the time, with the ability to hit occasional gravel roads when needed. I'm seriously considering a CB500X - cheapish, developed, and proven reliable. Sounds like your analysis got you to the same place! Cheers from New Zealand 🇳🇿

Speaking to the dealership it sounds like a lot of people feel same about the wheels. I reckon there will be a tubed option at some point down the line. Always good to wait for gen 2 anyway. It looks great other than that, but I have 2 bikes to suit me so no hurry. A friend of ours moved to NZ from Liverpool, he has a Himalayan and is having a ball. With your landscape you are already 99% there. I don't think there is any one bike to suit - me at least. I totally agree on your weight limits, especially as I'm older now and I need to be sure I can pick up a bike that has fallen in a gnarly place. We aren't going to be picking it up on a carpet! Top heavy bikes worse still. I hope you find what you want. The CB500x following has taken me aback. There's so much love for it, that must mean something. Enjoy your bikes 👍👍

Great ride along and commentary. Excellent points re: not being a test subject for new engines. Bummer about the battery. I'd gone and looked as well. I've asked a few folks with substantial mileage how their water pumps have held up. Most said still on the original. One guy unfortunately must have got a bad universe day CB500x. His pump failed early on. Then the replacement failed even sooner. He researched it and said they claim the place that makes the pumps for Honda has issues getting the internal impeller 100% straight or true. It eventually gets wonky then it leaks. Sad Honda just doesn't redesign that bit?!? But, there's worse flaws out there as you pointed out on other more expensive bikes.
@CodgerBiker

Cheers. I'm not worried about the water pump. I reckon I could fit a new one easily enough. Main thing is we know about it. Unlike a brand new model with no history, basically using riders to beta test them. There's just not the budget on bikes compared to cars I guess. Even then recalls are common. Overall it's a bike I'd ride around the world without a concern - maybe with a spare pump in the luggage 😉 Cheers for watching. I enjoy your channel also. 👍👍 No CT125 Trail over here. The only bike I will replace my CB500X for is the CB600/650X with the same simplicity of the 500, minimum electronic systems and a bit bigger fuel tank. Unfortunately Honda doesn't have such bike...

Cheers! I kind of adressed that here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i894Y7de27SxqWg.html In summary it has a few vibes at certain revs. These were more noticeable after I removed the bar end weights (they’re there for a reason). But also have reduced as the engine has bedded in. Grip puppies sort it nicely. 👍

Was the Suzuki V-Strom 650 one of your considerations before you chose the Honda ?( non spoked wheel version!)…..
@CodgerBiker
@CodgerBiker Жыл бұрын
It was. But with the new 800 coming out and the higher cost, for me only the 500x was in my price range. If I gave up my 690 I know the V-Strom would not be as good offroad. A V-twin would have been nice though 👍

How can you get an explosive blowout on a tubed tyre? A puncture possibly but a blow out on the motorway? Anyway RAC, Green flag and the AA can help you there.
@CodgerBiker
@CodgerBiker Жыл бұрын
Tubes can disintegrate. I'd not risk it at speed on UK 'smart' motorways. You can get help if you make it to a refuge true. Everybody is free to choose. There's no guarantees either way, just playing percentages based upon personal experience. There's a reason most road going vehicles have tubeless wheels these days 👍
@jutjub22
@jutjub22 Жыл бұрын
I had it, not explosion, but front inner tyre lost pressure fully in a second, and the rim hit asphalt. No way to stop, crashed right away. Tubed tyre never again. I made the same decision, cb500x, also arriving around my birthday in April :).
@CodgerBiker
@CodgerBiker Жыл бұрын
At speed a tube can disintegrate when punctured letting go too quick for the rider to react. Especially on highway where they get hot, HD ones can get hotter than ordinary tubes. Usually a tubeless tyre gives some warning, holding onto the nail/screw and partly sealing around it till you can get to safety. Of course offroad riding, with low pressure, a tubeless tyre might come off the rim, but that’s not what I’m thinking about. I’ll take a fall offroad everyday over a blowout on a busy highway. Glad you got out safe 👍👍 Enjoy the bike!

The Transalp is arguably overpowered. I would sacrifice 10hp for 10kg less and thats without even considering price.

It's a bit heavy to be an off-roader (for ordinary mortals like me). So I see it as a nice, upright, tourer. Why then inner-tubes? It doesn't quite add up - for me anyway. 👍

Hi Codger, Kalamitous here to inform you that you have discovered zen,ying & yang plus Newton’s third law. That of equal and opposite with your £30 which is the only way to live in the 21st Century. You see Greta bangs on about saving the planet, being carbon neutral and all that. But my mate Dave Doom has personalised this and taken it to another level. He now does silly things like cycling 100 miles in a day but he always makes sure he is calorie neutral. In other words whatever calories he burns off have to go back in to keep the balance. Something you and DrJ can aspire to now that you have made a start with the £30. Life begins at 60 😂😂😂
