Sven Olsen did a complete Rally Raid on his CB500X, then sold it to his brother for a T7 and loved the T7. Then he bought the RR'd CB500X back and sold the T7 because he found the T7 too difficult to lift after a fall.

I own CB500X 2020 with some RR mods. I went to 2000 miles trip. Part of this trip was MABDR. This bike did it so well. No problems what so ever. I went to so called “technical” sections on MABDR. It was full of big rocks. RR skid plate took some dents there and protected my bike. I can say that this bike is underrated small adv bike. I am so happy with it.

You start the video about simple, straight forward. Really straight in weight and road manners.. yes significant differences between Tenere 700 and a CB500.. what Honda or someone else should do.. put this medium size twin in the frame cradle of a CRF250/450. Aluminum frame, 21in front wheel, great suspension and the missing link road manners and oil capacity..a bike you can go on a trip on and return without needing a top end rebuild and a new soul from being vibrated to death on the freeway. And then the bonus..a bike that is OK off road.. someone needs to make a bike that you can ride on and off road.. don't kid yourself..,450-550 pounds is not anything to do with off road..dirt roads sure but off road no

Hi, I'm an owner of a CB500X 2014 Rally Raid stage 2 (stock rims, 17" front). I've had it since 2016, when I bought it used without the kit from a Texan. I flew out and rode it back to California in four days (~500mi/day). I've since added the RR kit and plan to add the bigger rims as soon as they are available. My experience pretty well reflects what is said in this review. The bike looks great (custom livery helps), and the suspension upgrades make the bike better off road, but it doesn't get transformed into a Dakar bike. Rally Raid's goal was to make a lightweight adv bike, and the CB500X is great but it isn't quite that. In reality, the CB is about as heavy and powerful as my old 2nd gen KLR. While I've done medium-level tracks at the Julian rally, and I've taken it into the SVRAs here in Cali, it's more at home on fire roads than on technical terrain. It won't blow you away with power, and it'll still be a pain to lift. So why get this over the T7? The T7 is unfindable and unliftable. Also when you build your bike (RR kit), you get to know it better. And if you get a newer CB with the 19" front, you can skip the rim upgrades (I don't think spokes and steel are that big a deal). Why get this over the KLR? Less vibration, more reliability, better finish. Whatever bike you get (KLR, T7, etc) you may find yourself upgrading the suspension anyway, so the cost and effort argument on that kind of goes out the window. I think your best bet if going the CB route is to find a used one with the 19" front and add the suspension kit. But the CB, even with the kit, is kind of neither here nor there. If I were riding Latin America, I'd consider the CRF300L like Itchy Boots is doing. You aren't going to rip up the back roads, but you don't want to do that where there's no medevac, and down there they don't have as much freeway. If doing USA/Canada adventures, I'd consider something more substantial (Africa Twin, etc). Why the CB at all? Because it has no deficits. Reliable, with good cheap parts availability (this is important outside developed countries), you can take the freeway to the trail and it will be fine. It's a dependable, economical all-rounder.

Hey Ian, thanks for your work! Your first vid on cb500x did a great deal in helping me decide between this, the T7 and the V-strom 650xt. And so, right about your publishing this second q&a vid I just brought home my very own cb500x, my2021, a demo bike from Honda with hardly 700mi on it. The improvements brought about by the 2022 model were not convincing enough for me to shy away from what ended up to be a fantastic deal (just over $6.5k) on a 8-month old bike with very low mileage, in like brand-new condition. I put on some minimal dressing (upper&lower crash bars, central stand, handguards, radiator mask and a 12v outlet) and I'm looking forward to weather impriovement. In trepidation... I am a new rider 6.2", 218 lbs, this is my first bike and I am amazed at how comfortable, confident and at ease I feel riding it, like I can't believe it. Very happy with my.purchase. Looking fwd to riding many, many miles on it. If and when I outgrow it, my sight is set on the new Aprilia 660 touareg.

I’ve been riding motorcycles I since got my licence 49 years ago, and have just purchased my SECOND Honda CB500X - a late 2021 model to update from my 2015 model (on which I’ve ridden 22,000 km). These are the 6th and 7th motorcycles I’ve owned. I considered the 2015 model to be the sweetest, most economical, comfortable, practical and versatile motorcycle I’ve ever owned. My 2021 model (red tank) surpasses the 2015 model again - and has an improved ‘note’ (sound). Also, it looks absolutely gorgeous. My only criticism is that the dash (as the bloke presenting the video states) appears washed out and, depending on the angle of sunshine, can be difficult to read and, especially, at a glance.

The rims on the cb500x are very strong so the need for spoke wheels is not so critical. And my cb500x is Rally Raided to level two and makes a big difference on and off-road.

Did you end up with a CB500X and are you happy with it? In a similar vein, I am trying to talk myself down from the Africa Twin (would love the ATAS but $$$). There was an earlier comment about Jenny Morgan being the real deal that encourages me towards the CB500X but I know I will be about 97% road (not always the greatest road) and maybe 3% off road.

I think the main reason there isn't a smaller Africa (Transalp or Dominator) from Honda yet is Honda's fear that people will stop buying the big Africa. And my other thought is, when you think about it, it's a strange coincidence that the Japanese manufacturers don't seem to compete with each other in the ADV segment in a very direct way.

Here in Australia the cb500x is 10k and the T7 is 10k more. Rally raid is an option for Aussie riders.

Regarding height of tall riders, ROCKETMAN stated he was 6'3" and felt comfortable on the Honda CB500. Both on the 2019 model and the 2021 model.

I had a full Rally Raid CBX. The reason I built it was because there was nothing out there like it. With the FI KLR and T7 coming out, I no longer think that's the case. That's one of the main reasons I sold it. You don't need to build a mid sized fuel injected adventure bike anymore. Still a great bike if you don't need to do dual sport level off-roading.

Nice shout-out to Jenny Morgan and Juan Browne (blancolirio). They've done the most to explain and review the RR upgrade options. Jenny has unfairly received critiques but she's done the Dakar Rally and really knows her stuff - more than many couch jockeys who pass their judgement. Best wishes in 2022 to you!

I'm 49 years old and looking at this bike. This would be my first and only bike. I have no intentions of doing any hard off roading. I'm 5'11" and 225 lbs. I don't care about being fast. Just want to enjoy the freedom of a bike. I am very experienced on atv type quads and trikes. I love the specs and looks of the 500x so do you think this would be a great first bike?

I've been riding a 2015 CB500X for a few years. I didn't really find it as a great ADV. It has a lot of Rally Raid upgrades, but not suspension. However I love it as a street bike. I changed out the tires to Michelin Road 5's and I'm very confident on curvy roads. I'm 5'7" and 185lbs.

Your channel & videos just keep continually improving. Listening to you today was a real education as it usually is - your bike knowledge and experience is extensive, especially for such a relatively young fellow. Anyway, slowly but surely working my way towards a purchase of my first bike in 40 years - & an ADV bike for certain. Like many of your viewers, trying to find that perfect product for my specific needs, assuming one exists, that provides not only the 70:30 ratio of "on/off road" riding that I anticipate in my future, but also within a budget I can afford. Great answers to some good questions today. I too wish Honda would make a middleweight 600-700cc Africa twin, as I would be in the same line, right behind you, waiting to buy one! Until then, looks like it will be either an NC750X with a Rally Raid suspension upgrade & a few other improvements, or an F750GS.

16t front sprocket.. is a total game changer on this bike. 5-5500 all day long 75-80 MPH. The vibes come in around 6200. It also gives the bikes a very usable 1st gear. When I ride bdr and technical mountain great 2nd-3rd gear bike.. I have rally raid level 2 kit on a 2021. Any questions? Let me know

The cast aluminum wheels on this bike are plenty strong and about half the weight of the spoke wheels. There is plenty of argument for this bike versus a T7. The argument to me is I paid $7,000 for this bike new. And yes I put $3,000 in it but it's just the way I want it for 10 grand. Buy a T7 at any steelership and you'll pay about 12 grand and it's bone stock with no protection and no customization. And you'll have the clutch cover hit in your right leg all day

Thanks for your response. It does make me nervous that the CB500X uses the engine as a stressed part of the frame. I am in Las Vegas and looking to enjoy the desert roads and wondering which is the better bike for that. I feel the CB500X has a lower seat height but with the cast wheels and vulnerable under carriage and engine being part of the frame that the rocks might become a real issue in this territory. I will add that i intend for my riding to be more take it easy and get out and enjoy the scenery and not hard riding at my age, 66.

This guy who has a touring company reviewed the CB kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aM53aZpzqMDUg4E.html He says you should take it easy because of that stressed member motor, but considering where they ride and who is riding, if they haven't had a problem then we probably won't either.

Many other bikes such as the Yamaha T7 and KTM 790/890 use the engine as a stressed member also. I would not be concerned.

@@stoicwarrior346 Hello Lucio, yes I decided to go with the CB500X and did that for the following reasons: 1) it just felt lighter and more nimble - something I can lift, push and handle easily (I'm not 20 anymore - hehe 🙂). 2) It has about the same fuel efficiency, but it has a better range - so I can go further between fuel stops. 3) Should I "outgrow" it at some time - it is easier to sell (the NC750X is a fantastic bike, but I bet there are less folks looking for that vs. the CB500X). @@rolandwehlend Hi Roland, thanks for getting back to me. Thats very usefull information because I'm 60 😪and need to avoid heavy bikes because its important to be able to manoevre without too much effort. I'm more of a highway rider and it seems putting a 16 front sprocket gives it long legs. The only downside is there are none in the country(south africa) delivery in August so no used ones about.We dont know what they will cost hence the reason I asked about the NC750 because there are many about new or old. They looking at reducing speed limits which means that we dont have to feel pressurised to keep up on a small capacity engine so hopefully no need to stress the engine. Could you let me know how maintenance goes etc. Hope you have many fun miles and enjoy the easter break. Hope to chat to you again to share knowledge and thank you👍

I’m late commenting on an older video but, I just checked with Rally Raid’s website and they still don’t have components available for 2022 CB500X yet. The change in fork configuration makes it a completely different animal. So if your looking to upgrade 2022 model (if you can find one) be prepared to wait or work with another manufacturer. I haven’t researched US based companies for suspension upgrades but I would think the price would be far cheaper than paying the high import fees on Rally Raid products. From what I saw ( unless I read it wrong) the cost to import is almost as much as the suspension itself. Food for thought.

This was interesting and I appreciate the discussion. I had a 2017 CB500F, so not an X, I admit. But I found it terrible on the highway; just too frantic and unstable. As well, it all feels like it was really built down to a price, and is definitely a beginner bike. Clunky shifter and a bargain basement display. The X is not really an adventure bike, in the same way that the CB500 R is not really a sport bike. Not that the X can't do off pavement but I think it is primarily package over substance. True, the reliability is excellent and the fuel economy is remarkable. I replaced the 500F with a Yamaha T-Max 530 scooter, and that was a better motorcycle than the 500F. I'd like to try the newer 500 X again, but I just don't feel the fundamentals are there.

Your doing a great job! Like ur viewpoint on the 500X it is on my short list as a companion to my CRF250Rally. There are so many great bikes out there now. I'm looking forward to reviews on some you haven't done yet. 300Rally vs Himalayan which is the better all-rounder. Have you considered reviewing older models on the second hand market. Just some ideas - keep up the great work enjoying your work.

I think a CB500 would be a great do it all bike with a few mods. Like he said .. Don't spend $3k on mods unless you really like it already .. Personalize it but don't try to make it a T7

CB500X is so different to T7. With all RR mods on the bike will be so capable off-road and easier to ride comparing to T7. If you are aggressive rider with mostly single track rides and you are Ok to lift up your bike, go with T7. If you need a commuter and very good off-road capabilities, easy to maneuver, easier to lift up, go with CB500X.

If you already own it and bought all the other accessories, it's probably quite a bit cheaper to Rally-Raid it than to trade it in for a T7, which also costs more to insure and run (additional ~CAD$1000/year in operating costs for me in Ontario, Canada). If you don't yet own one it's a much closer call.

thanks for the review! I am currently in the market for a bike and the 500x and the t7 have been on my radar for a while now. I'm going to try and get out to some demo days this spring and summer to see if I can try these bikes out in person. without riding them yet I think I am being pushed towards the t7 just due to the fact I'm 6'3 and 230 pounds. love the price of the 500x but the extra cash spent for the t7 just seems worth it even though its around 4000 more out the door.

I think you provide a fair and balanced review of the stock 500x. I have a 2017 model and soon opted to give the old girl a boost with the full Rally Raid upgrade. I don't claim to be skilled enough to get near the performance of my bike but in the right hands it is a true adventure bike. I did see a review by this Australian guy who takes the bike to another level. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pKh9pLSilajKh4E.html I ride thousands of miles in Thailand and the choice of a Honda has been a lifesaver in regards to cost of spares, so many options for repairs and ability to cope with road and off road conditions. I noticed a lot of concern about the cost, easy answer, buy a good second hand stock bike and upgrade to a fantastic all round bike that will deliver at so many levels, then again you can get a big GS R1250 and go to Starbucks lol

I will be lining up to buy a honda Transalp when they finally make one. They have secured the trademark for it and im hoping for a 750cc africa twin ala the t700

I really like both, the 750X DCT is arguably the best commuter bike out there - ridiculously convenient and efficient. Just won't take it offroad, that's where the CB500X is a great compromise between road and dirt (you should add Barkbusters, bash plate and crash bars though - like any ADV that goes offroad).

Great perspectives and so well spoken! Love your videos and content. P.S. ...the LCD dash does have a brightness adjustment mode to make it brighter, mine was in the middle of the adjustment from the factory so it is slightly improved but still not great.

Totally agree with your assessment of the Rally Raid kit. It's a well made kit but relative to the overall cost of the bike, it's a pretty big financial commitment. The Africa Twin is a big bike compared to the CB500X so that might be too big a jump up for some riders. It's rumoured that Honda will release a mid-tier adventure bike that will slot in between the AT and the CB500X which could be a nice upgrade for a lot of CB500X owners.

If I finally buy the CB500X this year the mid size AT will launch at EICMA this year. In Canada: they dropped the VFR800 after I bought one, dropped the Varadero after I bought one and brought out the new Gold Wing after I bought my F6B. I should buy the 500X as a public service to everyone waiting one the mid-size AT. LOL.

i wish these smaller bikes at least had the option of cruise control. to me that is the main thing missing from the 750x. if the 500x had it even the Rebel 500 had it i think they would sell more. good vid

Always great video, thank you Sir. I seated on a CB and I was so I pressed, it’s a tall bike. I hesitated between CB and the Strom 650 but as a tall and heavy guy. I choose the Suzuki. You talked about a mid siz ADV bike from Honda would be great…..what about the Transalp, it seems Honda works on that …

Seems to me the 500x is designed for mostly road travel with the ability to do off road as long as it not to harsh environment. I saw itchy boots take it across Europe road a lot of off road seemed to have little problems but talking dirt and gravel road vs. completely rough terrain and faster speeds. Thanks for your reviews

This parallel twin engine has the same smoorh feeling as a V2 engine? I have a Honda Transalp 700 and that 's the reason i ask. Greetings from Greece. I like your videos and i appreciate your opinion.

KLR 650 is not reliable. If ridden on the hwy at 5,000 or more rpm it drinks oil. A lot of oil. KLR has the Doo Hickey issue also which can destroy its engine in as little as 1,000 miles. The Honda 500 is so easy to out grow due to its low level of HP. I saw one with only the rider on it and it needed full throttl 200 pounds or more rider would be screaming at it to "Get going" as it is not enough power. Put some luggage on it and might as well have a bicycle.

Hi Ian! What do you think about nc750x in comparison to cb500x. I see them pretty similar, and do hesitate on buying one of them in the nearest future. Do you have any opinion about nc750x? New subscriber here... I have "that" question - what bike or couple of bike would you recommend that I look at? I know that there is no right answer to this question, but maybe a pointer in a direction. And I know I must test drive any bike to feel if it is right for me, but... I'm 6,2 (188cm), and inseam - I dont know, but buying pants, if there is a size 34/34 or 34/36, they would probably fit. I dont like to bend my knee too much, so the bike with the biggest distance seat/footpeg is a contender. I dont go off road at all. 95% asphalt and 5% gravel road. I like the adventure bike seating position, and comfort is big for me. At least 95 hp since I'm a 95 kg (apx 200+ lbs??) guy, travelling/touring with panniers and wife. I also like low rev torque... Mods I'll probably have to consider: Higher/softer seat. Lowered footpegs. Higher windshield. Centre stand. Pannier rack. Heated grips. I didn't like the Honda ATAS (-19, I expect the -20 to be similar here..?) due to the larger fuel tank. My knees didn't fit... Today I have a Honda Varadero XL1000 -04 on which I modified the seat and footpegs, and when it is time to switch, I would appreciate your take on this. The reason for me asking is that I think you make very good reviews and you have tried most of the bikes that would be of interest... Just what bikes comes to mind reading this? /DP

Thank you for all your reviews, always a good balance :) Regarding a RR CB500X, you've acknowledged a 500X is a good bike for short people like me. Here you wonder if paying for the RR upgrades would just be better spent on the T7. But for a shorter rider wouldn't the T7 be really quite high, so a RR500X wins for those folks? Or any alternatives at that height and performance level, and on/off road balance? T7 plus lowering kit too tippy for shorties?

The price difference between CB500X and T7 is huge in my region. T7 more than twice as expensive. Even a couple of expensive mods to the Honda won't get you to T7 money.

On paper, this bike looks perfect. My fear is I will find it to be without character, like the NC700X. I dislike bikes that feel like appliances. Not being able to test ride one is a real problem. Leaning toward the admittedly slower Himalayan which I know has personality.

The Honda is a great bike but it's a road bike full stop I've ridden the Kawasaki it's good but very tall so i bought a Himalayan ,yeah not the most reliable of the lot but easy to improve without spending much money.

Many of the entry level and intermediate bikes you review are rather difficult to find at any dealer even where I live in a major metropolitan area. Are the motorbike manufacturers behind in production just like the automakers caused by the covid shutdown of production facilities all over the world???

Just found this channel and subscribed, great content. I’m looking to get into motorcycling, never owned one, my only experience was riding a scooter as a kid. I was looking at a KLX 300 dual sport, but also liked the CB500X. Will a newbie feel comfortable and confident on the CB500X? Or do I need to start with a 250/ 300cc dual sport?

Cb 500 has 33"seat height and weighs 440 lbs klx has 35" seat height and weighs like 306 lbs. Klx is very easy to learn on or off road riding. Not fun at highway speeds. Cb is going to feel a lot more planted at highway speeds because of the weight difference. But you won't have near as much fun on it off road. I got the klx as my first bike because I love off road riding, plus I can go back to and forth to work on a short commute for practically no money. But if you're mostly gonna be on road with your bike Id get the cb to be able to comfortably ride on the highway. Either are great beginner bikes

To be honest even though not all your words would be of any use for me but I eagerly listen to. I have a question too... We, my wife and I, would ride long trips but not as far as around the world, like 2~3 thousands for example. What would you recommend then. Of course budget is a matter. Thanks

You comment that you don't like the dash and that happens, or we break them, or our bike is a museum piece and really needs an upgrade. Could you investigate and do a video if viable on aftermarket dashes for bikes. There may be kind of Dakar rally pro spec or serious dashes available like i have seen retrofitted into cars.

Hi mate, I'm considering a new KLR650 or Honda cb500x or the Himalayan As my first bike. I'm 6.2 and 220 pounds. I will probably use the bike 65% sealed road and 35% dirt roads. I would love to hear your thoughts on my first bike selection, and any recommendations. Kind regards Billy

My two cents. I’m getting a CB500X- I’m 5ft 9, and it fits me perfectly, based on the stats, it’s lighter (the KLR has put on a lot of weight with the update) lower seat height, and it has the best fuel range. You might need the KLR, as you may feel cramped on a CB. of the three, the Himalayan is “probably” the worst built. I keep hearing stories of bolts snapping off, and rust. Now, I’m headed to the outback, and don’t want to be left stranded, lol

The more i hear from you the more i think i should go for a v-strom. It looks dated though. It will surely get a really nice update the year after i purchase if or when i do. I have a Triumph tiger 1200 now with spoked rims and the spokes corrode very easily. I can get them to shine using a fine grit steel wool but it doesn’t stay shiny for very long. Does anybody know what i can do to protect them?

Get the wheels rebuilt with stainless spokes. Not cheap but if you like the bike and it's a keeper........ .
