How to change your CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) Fluid in a 2014-2015 Honda Civic ( late 9th generation Civic 2014, 2015). NOTE: this is for CVT models only, on 2012-2013 this would be vary rare. The process would be very similar but the fluid would be different (ATF DW-1). Refer to your manual for the correct transmission fluid for your car, the PDF manuals are linked at the end of this description. This is a 2014 Honda Civic EX Sedan. Your transmission fluid change will be very similar. This will save you a lot of money and only takes about a half hour to replace yourself. I bought the CVT Fluid from a Honda Dealer for $12.47 a quart.
Tools:
Phillips Head Screw Driver
17MM Socket
3/8" Ratchet
Vehicle Ramps - amzn.to/3nw6ZRK
Parts:
4 quarts Honda HCF-2 CVT Fluid or equivalent
1 CVT Drain Bolt 18MM Washer
Using these amazon links doesn't cost you anything extra, but a small portion of your purchases when using these links will support this channel!
Here are links to the HFC-2 Fluid and washer used in this video:

I found this video a couple weeks ago as I have just changed my transmission fluid today (07/01/23). This video was extremely helpful with the time being minimal and the details on performing this procedure being short and precise. I see a lot of individuals sharing points and tips so I figure I will share mine during my experience. I leveled my car on jack stands in my garage, I had to loosen both the fluid check bolt and the drain bolt with a 3/8 breaker bar. I made sure I was able to loosen the check bolt first. Then the drain bolt. When replacing the crush washers on both bolts keep in mind that the washer for the drain bolt is smaller than the washer for the check bolt. I didn’t measure them with calipers so I can’t give measurements for them. I was able to replace the washer for the drain bolt and the washer for the check bolt was in good shape so I reused that one until I can find and use a new one for the next transmission fluid change. When I refilled the fluid I put in roughly 3.5 quarts before fluid started dripping from the check bolt area for the first part of the procedure. I tightened the check bolt and shifted through gears and removed the check bolt again for the second part of the procedure I ended up adding half a quart more until fluid stared dripping from the check bolt area again. I couldn’t find a torque specification so I just tightened it until it was snug similar to snugging an oil drain bolt. In total I ended up filling the transmission with roughly 4 quarts of the HCF-2 transmission fluid as my owners manual specifies the type of fluid to use but not how much. When I got my car it was at 54,500 and I did this fluid change at 61,000 miles as there wasn’t a lot of maintenance information given when I got it so I don’t know when fluids were changed and such. Hopefully this helps whoever reads this comment

I'm not going to be able to level my car without buying more equipment (I just have the same ramps he used in the video). Thanks for specifying the amount you used. My owners manual says mine (2015 Civic LX Sedan) will take 3.6 Qts but I'm frequently seeing people adding 4.

for 2014-2015 civic 1.8L cvt transmission, the torque specs should be: drain bolt( 36 ft. lbs ), check bolt( 32 ft. lbs ) according to “Vehicle Service Quick Reference Guide Covering 2013 - Later Honda Vehicles”

This guy is the ONLY one who got this CVT oil change right, as others I watched on here (maybe one did mention it) never even talked about the CHECK BOLT to check the fluid level! It’s a crude and strange way for Honda to resort to this method, but it is the same on the Accords I found out and as of 2019, hasn’t changed at all! I was nearly a quart short when I changed my 2014 Civic’s CVT fluid last year, as I measured the fluid I drained out, letting it drain completely and then found that nearly a quart was needed to get it to ovefilll and drain a bit from the check bolt. Not sure what this says, but I believe a lot of folks with new vehicles will have issues and maybe transmission repairs in future years. I suspect most people do not have this done as the dealer cost is high, and also there is the matter of a small CVT oil filter that requires taking the battery out and removing the entire battery compartment! I did this, and the damn filter (Fram) didn’t even fit right as the gasket was too big! But it all came together with some patience and motivation, and I did this first oil change at about 27k miles. Someone suggested changing the oil every 50k after the first drain and fill, which sounds right by all I know. My wife’s 2012 with its 5 speed trans is much easier and fairly simple by comparison. Thanks to this guy! If You Tube removes this video, they are making a HUGE mistake! He got it right, so do SUBSCRIBE and let’s keep the knowledgable people doing vids here on car maintenance supported and show them we care and appreciate their efforts!

The one thing I do different is that I keep the check plug on and add the 4 quarts. I then start the engine and cycle through the gears to allow some of the fluid to flow into the transmission. Then after, I remove the plug to drain any extra, that way I don't under fill.

Thanks! Yes, there will be a very slight over/under fill situation except in an extreme slope situation... but I agree in most circumstances it would be almost negligible. I agree with @minutediyvideos response. If the car is not level, what you drain won't be the same as refilled. You could actually put more. If you measure what you put and put the exact amount you should be good, granted there was the correct amount to start with.

Be sure the car is level on 4 jack stands (all wheels off the ground) to do this so you do not over fill the CVT. This is exactly the same as doing the fluid in my manual transmission on my 2008 Civic Si. I have changed my wife's 2015 Civic Ex CVT fluid before and it is not hard. Be sure to change out all the crush washers when you do this.

@@dAnnysixx1 What needs to be defined is the fact that this isn’t an “opinion”. A torque wrench isn’t designed by engineers to remove fasteners than have a great amount out torque repeatedly. I’m glad you have people doing something that seems to be not causing any issues for you. However it’s a fact that torque wrenches are precision tools primarily designed to TORQUE fasteners. Can they reverse, yes, however that’s not their intended design and it is bad practice. You won’t catch an engine builder like myself doing anything like that. It’s not advisable and again not just an old wives tale. If it works for you great, I’m happy.

Breaker bar and ratchet drive are designed to undo and redo bolts respectively. Only use torque wrench to do final tighten up so it will last as long as possible before calibration is needed! p.s. Calibration of torque wrench costs at least as much as a new cheap one! This is why most mechanics don't use them.

Nice video. I just finished changing transmission fluid on my 2015 Fit. I use the same procedure except I jack the car up to drain the fluid, then lower it so it's level while it continues to drain. After 15 mins or so, I jack it back up to put drain plug in and torque. Then lower again to fill. I can reach the fill check with the car level on the ground. It's awkward, but reachable.

@@Rrm-br5ku No transmission problems at all with the FIT. We traded it in on a 2018 Certified Used FIT just because my wife drives a lot for work and we had the opportunity to trade to a lower mileage vehicle. We had about 150K on the 2015 FIT when we traded for the 2018 with 5K. I'll add that I followed the Maintenance Minder System for the transmission for the first interval. The first change was at about 60K. After that, I decided to do a transmission service every 30K miles. This is more conservative than the Maintenance Minder periodicity.

When the car is level, should the fluid from the drain hole run dry, or should you hurry up and put the bolt back on while it’s leaking out? I’m afraid I may have put too much fluid or not enough because I had the car jacked up while checking last time.

My 2015 CRV AWD will take 4.5 qt. and I could not find a "check bolt/hole". Did mine at 35k and fluid was dark brown. Would not be able to see drain plug if dropped in oil. New fluid was very light yellow like cooking oil. Lifetime fluid my arse. Thanks for the video!

Hey, thanks for this super informative video! Definitely will be changing my Civic's CVT fluids on my own thanks to this :D. I wanted to ask you a question, though. When you start your Civic, after like 5 seconds or 10 seconds do you hear this semi-persistent kind of grinding noise? It's hard to describe, but it sounds kind of like a cricket chirping randomly.
@andrewgeorge1809

Very late to this one, but yes I also have that type of noise. I took it to the dealer and they said it was just the sound of the injectors and was normal.

Should be at the front of trans behind the heat exchanger towards the top, remove the 3 bolts and there is a small filter tucked in there.

So, I was wondering if you knew the answer to this question... What are the parameters that Honda programs into its vehicles that govern how quickly or slowly the % oil life remaining ticks down. Is it just mileage or are there other things that are measured and recorded? I own a 2016 Civic coupe with a 2.0 and CVT. I put a lot of miles (40k per year) on it and they are mostly fairly smooth highway miles. Really nicely done video. Thank you.

Will changing the fluid help with imid display milage...? Full tube up has bn done other than new air fuel ratio sensor and oxygen sensor an maf. What could be my problem? 2012* civic ex thanks

How do you do this off the stands? I have the same ramps but my driveway is pretty level unlike yours so while it’s on the ramps I won’t be able to check the correct level. Should I just try to wiggle my way under the car off the ramps?

Overall good video. Very helpful. However you should change the TRANSMISSION FILTER. It’s under the air breather box. It’s simple to change. I change the fluid and filter. Also this is a PARTIAL FLUID CHANGE. this needs to be done 3 times over the next 3 oil change cycles to thoroughly change ALL THE FLUID. I have the part number for the transmission fluid filter if anyone needs it. Local Honda dealer says there is no filter. They are wrong. Trust me / I have 2013 Honda Civic

@@blakethesnake1555 Are you sure the part number is for a CVT one? 2013 Civic uses a traditional automatic transmission while 2014-2015 models use a CVT transmission and I see the part won't fit a CVT model.
