I own a crx and every time someone looks at my car they say "man I wish I never sold my crx it was the best car I had" long live the crx!

The 1988 CRX Si was the first new car I owned. Loved the car!

I daily drive a 1986 Honda CRX DX model which is in between the fuel efficient HF and the sportier Si. It has a carburetor and NO computer at all. It is the Canadian version with no emission controls and even a manual choke. One of the last cars Honda ever made with out an ECU. Runs like a Swiss watch to this day.

In 1987 I purchased my first car, a 1985 CRX HF. I was hooked and a Honda fanboy I became. In 1989 I purchased a brand new CRX Si. To this day it is still one of my favorite cars only second to my 2002 S2000. There is a lot of hype around the CRX but honestly, it was something special. In high school I remember friend's dads reliving their youth by buying 60s and 70s muscle cars. I can see us 40 somethings doing the same with CRX's.

I owned a USDM 1990 CRX Si for 27 years. My mother-in-law purchased a USDM Del Sol Si new when they first came out so I had many opportunities to drive her car and mine back to back while both were in healthy stock form. The Del Sol was a comfortable, smooth car and even had a higher redline but it lacked the sporty edge that the CRX had. Everything about the CRX was more direct and immediate with a lighter, more "awake" feel to it. The CRX shifter had longer throws, but required less effort through the gates. The CRX engine also had more low end torque. After driving the Del Sol, I was always happy to return to my CRX!

1988-1991 CRX and Civics were the best civics.

I'm in the UK and on my third crx. It is an '88 model before the abs and side strengthening bars were added keeping it light. People love them. When parking or getting fuel, people come over and comment on this great classic. One thing is for sure, it will never be for sale.

the CRX were fun cars. Agile and quick given the time period they were produced in, plus the tires were small enough to break the car loose. Honda caught lightning in a bottle.

Well done! I had a 1st gen CRX in high school and I loved that thing. The Del Sol should have been its own thing because it is definitely not a CRX. Actually I believe the true successor to the original CRX right not is not even from Honda. I think the Hyundai Veloster N is the true successor to the CRX. It is what the CRZ should have been. The CRZ could have been a good successor, it doesn't weight much & has the same overall style. If Honda made it with better suspension, and in an "SI" trim with the K series trim i'm sure it wouldn't have been discontinued.

I met the Toyota"s engineer who designed the Prius. He told me. The CRX inspired the aerodynamic design of Prius.

Back in 1984, when I put $500 down and had to wait 90 days, for my 1.3L CRX, the speed limit was 55 MPH. I lived in Florida where it is mostly flat. When I drove 55 MPH, on I-4, I would get 50 MPG. when I would drive 50 mph my MPG would jump to 59. I ran 87 octane gas, but every 3 months I filled up with Texaco's 93 oct. The dealer said that the USA was limited on the number of imports, each month. I was told 50, but I never believed that it was that low. My out the door price was $8,100 That 1st year of the USDM CRX they did not call the economy engine an HF, they called it the 1.3

I also own a crx. It is a 1990 model, it has the B16A1 engine with 150hp. In europe its called the EE8. Love it.

I have a 1985 Honda crx SI (first gen) with a b16b VTEC type R engine. I live in Asia so spare parts are everywhere XD

I never owned an CRX, but in ‘96, I knew a guy who tuned his and raced his ‘88 CRX. That was my first real introduction into racing culture.

Awesome as always, Gary. I have a '94 Del Sol VTEC, and while I love it's high revving engine, removable top, and handling characteristics, I just don't feel that it's spiritually in line with the previous CRXs. That's not necessarily bad! It just forged it's own path. Japanese cars are clearly your passion, and you present them so well. I'd like to see your take on some American cars as well, especially on your old Camaro you mentioned as I'm also a sucker for 4th gens.

I had a 1985 CRX Si ( black) and a 1988 CRX Si ( red) and loved them both. Sure wish Honda would find a way to bring one back with either the existing Honda 1.5 turbo or 2.0 turbo.

In 1988 I bought a new 1988 CRX Si. In 2012, I bought a manual trans CR-Z. Was it similar, yes. Was it the same? No, but I enjoyed it all the same. It was slower, more comfortable, more refined, but still fun to drive. I have a 2018 Civic Si Coupe now.

If Honda just got off its high horse and actually listened to the people, they would have never made an Un-sellable NSX, would have a 2nd gen S2000 on the road doing burn outs, a 6th gen prelude, and an awesome little CRX!..Instead, we got nothing but crap for a long time with no promise and direction to boot. Just listen to the people Honda! We want classic Honda back! Screaming Vtec, lightweight hatches, cool tech features without being over the top, affordable supercars that make the rest of the world drool.... Please,... Please.. Bring it back. Since I'm not holding my breath, thank God I can still go buy an old, well taken care of 90s and 2000s model Honda.

If CRZ would use K20 Engine it would probably get more attention from enthusiasts, cuz now it is cool looking ride, but not much besides that.

I had a 89 CRX back in 1999 and the cam broke and tore up the head, back then i didn't have the resources on Hondas i have now to fix it so i sold it and regreted it, i recently bought a bone stock 88 CRX HF off my neighbor running for dirt cheap, no cel, 5 speed .. I'm keeping this one. Imo its the best Honda classic you can own, it never gets old and everybody still loves them

So much to unpack here. The 1985 CRX Si was the first car I bought, as a graduating HS senior, $9800 out the door new. I had it for 7 years as a weekend commuter from college thru grad school. Averaged about 36 mpg. Folks conflate the Si and HF together, but the HF 50 mpg came at the cost of performance and structural rigidity. Gas of that era was 10% more efficient as it wasn’t diluted with ethanol. The CRX was not designed for the American climate, as the AC was added at the port, and it was quite weak. It had a novel (for an economy car) push button controlled HVAC system instead of the usual cable/lever system. The Si sunroof that opened outside of the roof was truly unique, and along with the Accord of the same year, the Si marked the first fuel injected motor for Honda. Interior storage was amazing as well as Honda reliability. I briefly looked at the Honda Del Sol when the VTEC arrived in the mid nineties but the dealer was wanting in the mid-twenties for it. Allow that to sink in... 2.5x compared to the original CRX Si. By the way, “del Sol” really stood for “delete soul”... it had little character. Fast forward to 2011 thru today: I’ve owned each of the three CRZ variants. Price on each was roughly $20k which I find amazing compared to the del sol of two decades ago. And the EX model is well appointed. Tank ave mpg has been about 40, with a hero tank of 49 mpg. I think after the Civic Hybrid battery fiasco, Honda rated the hwy mpg too conservatively on the CRZ. The CRZ is a faithful successor of the CRX. It even has three driving modes that remind me of HF/DX/Si. If you want more performance there’s factory and aftermarket superchargers available. For the way I drive it 99% of the time, I don’t need extra power. The CRZ is available as a six speed hybrid, and in 3-4th gears it’s a very torquey motor to redline. Unfortunately it’s just not a lot of hp these days. But the torque of the electric motor is nice when you’re running ac in the city from a tiny inline 4. The CRZ is a better balanced momentum car compared to the original, but the CRX punched higher than its class as the overall performance of comparable vehicles in the late eighties wasn’t anywhere near today.

I loved my little cr-x (last model pre del sol). We couldn't go with the del sol as we had puppies and needed that hatch, so we went 'integra'. Not a bad choice and I loved my type-R. Ahhh, the good ol' days! Great video - Thanks!

I bought a brand new base model 1988 CRX-HF for $9,172 off the dealer's lot. It had only air conditioning. I added a alpine stereo. Buying this car is one of the greatest memories I had of my life. I remember my younger brother and I shopping around and then taking me to buy it. I had it for 8 years, then bought a used one and drove it for another 2 years. I regret giving up both of them. Every single mile, ever single shift of the gears was an enormous pleasure. I drove it everywhere. I put 20k miles on it every year. Its short wheel base and independent double wishbone suspension gave it an agility and nimble handling that no car I've driven has ever had. Thanks to the gearing, it's acceleration was decent even though it only had 71 horsepower. The limitation was it's highest speed on the highway was only 94 mph, which was a limitation I think most people could easily live with. I think many of my friends look at it as a tiny cheap car and couldn't understand why someone my size (6' 2") would drive it. I thought it was a better more modern designed version of a Porsche 9-11 - with only slight compromise in engine power in order to provide lighter, more nimble, and better handling. I've never driven a car that handled better than that - not even close - it was like driving a go-kart but with a great suspension system. I also loved the stacked boxes, minimalist instrament panel with it's center consul shifted toward the direction of the driver. I didn't need a cup holder because a cup, bottle or other drink could easily fit snug and pinned in between the seat and the parking break. The only thing that generation didn't have was electronic stability control - as a front wheel drive vehicle it drove well in the snow but could still have problems with control from slipping. I'm not sure that they should have stopped making that car and would love to be able to buy something identical but with safety feature updates. I now drive a 2017 Jetta - it reminds me a lot of my old CRX in that it's a very cheap car that delivers really great stuff. I'm older and if I only have 1 car I need something roomier, like a sedan that can accomodate passengers now and then. It has a 1.4 liter turbo that goes from 0-60 in under 8 seconds - the traditional definition of a fast car and great manual shifting (though not nearly as sweet as my old CRX), has 4 wheel independent suspension, gets 40mpg on the highway, provides 38+ inches of legroom for back seat passengers (thus bigger than most midsized and even SUVs and has a huge trunk too) - in short it's bigger on the inside than midsized, gets better gas mileage than most sub-compacts, and as much acceleration as most V-6s, and it cost me only about $16k and came with a life-time powertrain warranty - though I haven't had any problems with it. Having said that, I still miss my old 1988 CRX and wish some how I could have hung on to it and just kept it in shape. The current Jetta has the same engine, better interior (although slightly less roomy back seat and trunk) six speed but I don't think its as good looking - still its a great vehicle for the money and I think the best value in its class, all things considered (the New Mazda3 is of course of great car, but it's less roomy and has less performance characteristics, but very beautiful). One can and will pay more for a car or and SUV but they have to pay MUCH more to get substantially more car for the money.

Great video with excellent content. 1 thing though, it was the "Vtec" model of the Del Sol that introduced the B16A3 engine, not the Si as mentioned in the video. I feel that was a poor trim naming convention by Honda and they should have went with "SiR" or something like that.

I bought an integra about 2 years ago and became a honda fanboy. I just got a b16a swapped 91 crx si. This car is awesome.

Almost sold my 89 si recently but decided not too because I knew I would regret it. Mechanically solid. Has a few wiring issues with seatbelts and doors sensors and motor where when i try and start it, atleast once a month, it clicks once and no start or crank so i just need to disconnect and reconnect the battery but starts every time and only has 130,000 miles ok my d16a6. Needs new suspension all around and a fair share of body work and new sunroof but solid beater. Worth fixing her up so keeping her as shes been my daily for 3 years now and still pulling strong❤️

Very first time ever seeing a CRX was a new 1984 & I saw these 2 girls getting in one at Mcdondalds & I remember thinking wth is that, looks like a toy car. 15 years later I owned one & developed quite an appreciation for them. The Comfort, great ride, smooth, & yes quik for passing was a breeze. I could pass confidently in thatcar better than my old heavier Mustangs

When I look back, my second gen crx was one of funnest cars i own. And I owned cars like Corrado VR6, r33 gtr and now owning a r35 gtr. I would buy it again in a hart beat.

In 2012, I purchased a 91 CRX HF with a B18A1 swapped into it. I was a 16 year old high school kid but i instantly got hooked. The car unfortunately got wrecked and I purchased a 96 Miata....which got wrecked when I got pulled out in front of, then I owned an 06 Mazdaspeed 6 (terrible piece of shit). I sold the MS6 and purchased a 90 CRX Si with its unmodified D16. Through all the wrecks and cars, I always held a special place in my heart for the CRX and always will.

Love my 90 Si so much. Only problem is finding a shop who is creative enough to keep it running smooth and fine because parts are becoming harder and harder to find. Such a good car and from what I was told long ago when I bought it, it was one of the last cars Soichiro Honda had a hand in creating.

No aftermarket hood is needed to clear the B16a engine as I did this swap in my garage at age 17 in 2003 in a 1991 CRX SI. Everything fit just fine.

I had an '88 CRX Si. It was my second Honda, and the first car I ever bought new, and I loved it to death. I think after 88, they moved the seatbelt anchor from the B pillar to the door frame, which seemed odd to me. The Del Sol was certainly not a CRX, because it had none of the practicality. And yeah--the back was NOT a rear seat, but I still had people who would ride back there. If Honda brought back a real successor, with type R performance, I'd buy it without thinking. My first car was a 1987 CRX. I loved that car...& should've kept it.

The 91 CRX Si was the first car I owned as what I learned to drive stick on. Bought a beater for $1000 and maintained it for a few years putting another $1000 into it until it died. Then it got totaled sitting on the street and my insurance payed out $2000 which I used with my savings and a small car loan to get my 350z which I still drive today. I still browse CRX's though to see If I can get another one.

89 with a D16A6, Skunk springs, Tokico shocks, braided brake lines, K&N filter, DC Strut bars. Fun as could be to drive. 40mpg hwy. My thoughts? A CRX is all there is. If it isn't a CRX, it just isn't a CRX.

I've always wanted a CRX, Escort GT, 944 Turbo and Del Sol. I've liked the delsol personally for the style and the CRX has always been the goto car for the guys from the ghetto that wanted to get into cars cheaply, so everyone talked of CRX's and preludes in my circle. My dad onwed a Escort GT with Cosworth mods thats was basically a street rally car. He worked two jobs one at night and one during the day and was sleep anytime he was home. I learned to drive sneaking his car out. I just got a 944 yesterday and thats one childhood dream off my wishlist. It needs a drivers side window and fresh paint. interior is mint and im gonna do some minor upgrades. I only spent $200! Its not a junk car eiter I got it from my boss. My goal is to retromod it into a modern daily.

Great video! CRX is my favorite car....I’ve heard that Del Sol was the successor to CRX due to CRX very poor crash tests/inevitable death if rolled over. Basically Del Sol was made safer (& heavier) to please insurance companies.

I HAD both the first and second generation CRX's. I never thought the Del Sol was a continuation of CRX. I always considered the Del Sol to be a funky civic. I still have some gen2 CRX parts in a box somewhere, LOL.

I had a 1985 CRX Si and a 1988 CRX Si and loved them both . Honda has the engine for it today to do a 2019 remake ( with a 1.5 turbo or possibly the 2.0 turbo from the Accord ) to throw into a 2018 Civic derived shortened 2 seater chassis. I would buy this in a heart beat. C'mon Honda ,you know you want to ......

I also think the CR-Z was a spiritual successor to the original Insight, because of the wedge shape and because of the hybrid powertrain

I watched this video in hopes of you connecting the CRX and CRZ, and you did, that's awesome. I'm not a Honda fan, but I think the CRZ is the best looking Honda there is, such a perfectly proportioned car. It's just too bad it was marketed as a "fuel efficient" Hybrid, even though it got worse mileage than it's predecessor... I'd love a CRZ with a 90s B-series VTech engine, coupled with the electric motor, that'd be a grand combination!

Nice vid, but I'll point out two things. 1. CRX is an acronym for Civic Renaissance X (Roman numeral ten). The Civic was first launched in 1973 and was basically the arrival of Honda in the US and elsewhere as a true vehicle mass producer. To mark the ten year anniversary, the CRX was developed for 1983 release, ten years after the first Civic. Honda was at this point in history, quite sentimental. They pulled a similar "trick" for the S2000, but it was to honor the S600/800 for the 2000 model year. 2. The TRUE successor for the Mk2 CRX already existed, and it's not the CRZ. It was the original Insight, circa 2000. Virtually the same size and wheelbase, lightweight aluminium and a very similar body style and layout. Yes it was a hybrid, but so is the CRZ but the first Insight is hundreds of kg lighter than the CRZ. It also held (still holds?) the record for most fuel efficient car with an internal combustion engine.

Great video brother! I’ve always wanted to get a CR-X but I live in a ghetto place where civics are commonly stolen and stripped. Then I wanted a CR-Z but there are none where I live. And the ones that are nearby are all jacked up and sketchy.

I bought a white 1991 CRX Si new in 1991. It had a MSRP of $9,999 and the radio and AC were the only real options. I paid a little over $8,000 for the car plus installed a radio. Owned the car for three year and put 40K on it. I sold the car in like new condition for $9,000 as they were no longer available new and were still in very big demand in the market place. The car was basically free to own for me less gas and insurance.

I wouldn't be too sure about the Del Sol inspiring the S2K. As a matter of fact, Honda had been building RWD cars long before the S2K and NSX. The 2000 actually gets its roots from Honda's 'S' series of high-revving roadsters that they built in the '60s (aka the S360, S500, the S600 w/ a 9,500 RPM rev limit, and the insane 10,000 RPM S800).
