There are several key things here: 1. Why on gods green earth ANYONE would give this video a Thumbs Down is beyond me. 2. Your videos are VERY informative and straight to the point without all of the stupid BS. 3. This is seriously the BEST bed setup I have seen. I have the same model but in Nighthawk Black. When the Element first came out I wanted to buy one just to destroy it and run it without oil and blow the engine up. NOW, after having one and my SC currently has 152K on her, I LOVE THIS THING SO MUCH! It's almost like having a sickness. I have spent more money putting ton of work in it and taking care of it. How in the world this is possible, I will never know. It's crazy how my view of this once hated vehicle by me is now my most loved vehicle. It's great still seeing these on the road today. Seems their owners really love and take care of them and that's probably why there are so many still "rolling". GREAT VIDS!

Danny I built the swirly design platform with some modifications. The hinge and all of the cuts are per your video, however from there I went off on my own. It took all of the hardware out and built a frame that holds up the platform that I now cut. In half. On the drivers side I removed the plywood not only to the hinge but just about to the spot wear the hardware starts. With the extra ply wood that I now have I made a spot wear I can cook. I live in my Element off and on as travel between my boat in North Carolina and my Grandkids in NH and Wisconsin. I’m in a place with real walls for the next couple of weeks. While I’m here I’m ordering a better mattress. I not that big of a guy so the Element is as comfortable as sleeping any where else. I stealth camp as I travel but I love it most when used as a camper. I’ve spent a few days now camping in the White Mountains then the National parks along the outer banks.

Ok I’m almost done with this build. Fantastic design! A couple of adjustments I made: - The fold-out flap on the bed can be a tad longer than 19” if you don’t have that center console you have in your Element (which I don’t). - I cut the 2x3 shorter than 33” so they didn’t cover my rear corner cubbies, and traced the outline of those on the underside of the rear platform and cut them out… because I wanted to be able to get to stuff in there. BUT… that compromises quite a bit of stability having the 2x3 so much shorter. So… - I’m attaching cable from the rear of the platform to the child seat anchors in the rear roof of the cab so it can take more weight. Those anchors are attached to the frame and designed for quite a bit of force, so why not. Thank you SO much for posting this.

Very well thought out design Danny. I have a 2004 Element where the rear seat attachment brackets are configured differently. The rear bolt stud is lower than your model but I was able to use the same Simpson U and L brackets as shown in the video. I just needed to rotate the rear L- bracket 90° and attach it to the inside metal sub-panel with self-tapping machine screws. I made the fold out leaf 24" wide since I am 6 feet tall. I also bought a 4'x8' sheet of 19/32 OSB for the decking which is plenty rigid. It was $23.95 at Lowe's vs twice as expensive for 5/8 plywood. I think 3/4 plywood is overkill.

I built one of these by myself in one afternoon using Danny's plans (based on his what I would do differently video) - minimal tools, I had home depot do most of the wood cutting. I used a cordless drill, a circular saw to do the corners, and a staple gun for the carpets. I'm not a highly experienced builder by any means, but this was a pretty easy project, and I use it a lot - much more than I thought I would - it's my pandemic escape pod. It was really cheap to build, and looks impressively finished if you choose carpet that matches your interior colors. I use an REI self inflating sleeping pad for my bed, and and made some window covers from reflectix and dark duct tape - under tinted windows, it's pretty stealth. One of the things I like about it is that if you drop your tailgate, it's a perfect height to use as a table - you just sit on the tailgate as a bench. There is a huge amount of storage space beneath the platform. Danny is a genius.

So far your design is the only one that accommodates access to the spare tire so you definitely get a 5/5 from me. As I’ve been trying to to figure out how to reconfigure my current setup, I’ve watched about 20 videos so far today and everyone of them have neglected access to their spare without moving cabinets and stuff onto the side of the road. If like that yours is clean and simple, however, I will be wanting to build in storage as well. Thank you for the inspiration and fresh take on this build.

So I used your updates recommendations. One thing to note; when you make the front panel (25x48) you will need to cut the corners at the front of that panel. I removed the tips of the corners ( 2"x2" 45 angles) and sanded them nice and smooth. If you do not, the front panel snags on the sides of the vehicle when you lay it down flat to extend the platform. I also intend to place my road bike under the platform so I needed bit more height. I just remove the front wheel and it works like a charm. I did this by adding an additional 2x3 on top of the one that is attached to the seat brackets. Thanks for this idea! I really like the idea of using the seat brackets. One thing I might have done was to make another rear panel that fold, to the back of the platform. Easier to get at stuff. But I didn't bother.

Love it! I'm almost done with this build but accidentally grabbed 1/2" plywood from Lowe's! I know it'll hold me, but two people I'm a little worried. I'm going to run a support piece under from one 2x3 to the other. I couldn't find the freestanding roll of carpet and I'm thinking about cutting a 10" piece in the back, use hinges so I can quick flip the back to get to the cubbies. Love your videos!

I think this is a good starting point but I didn't like that it made it difficult to quickly reinstall the Elements rear seats. The change of making is how that lateral cleat is attached, and to what. I'm using your idea of an bracket engaging with the existing rear seat support, but one that doesn't interfere with reinstalling the rear seat. Instead of a long lateral board screwed to the seat mount I'm attachin it to the bottom of the plywood as a cleat, building it up to rest on the wheel arch, and adding pole spacer legs at the rear truncated corners. My bracket's only function will be a tongue and spacer to hook into the existing support from the rear similar to how the seats do. This will be more complex to make fit, but have the advantage that it can be easily removed and the rear seat reinstalled without using tools.

My wife and I are approximately 300 together, no problem there, so as built 400lb would be fine, you also could add extra support or a cooler or tubs with supplies to add support

Thanks for sharing! We are going to try and build... One concern I have is putting the rear seats back in after using this setup. Do they go back in seamlessly? Did you have any damage done to the hardware of the side panel from the weight of the bed?

I'm surprised there's no middle support for the plywood. What about warping in humid conditions or from weight?
@dannysdiygarage

Thanks that’s a great question, I’ve had it for a year set up, I use mine only for camping and it is fine, however I live in California and we do not have humidity, adding an extra support shouldn’t be a big deal and if you think it’s needed I would suggest it

How is the support on the bigger section? I'm a bit worried that this design doesn't have any support or bracing on the center of the platform and only relies on the side rails you installed. I guess one or more can always be added, but just wanted your opinion as I didn't see you test or put weight on that part of the platform. Its also a bit of a bummer to lose access to the 2 big storage compartments in the back of the element as this seems to cover them up. Do you think there is a way to keep access to those without sacrificing stability? This might be why I make center support legs on the main section if possible. Thanks for the video!

It works for my wife and I, we have not needed extra support, but with this being said, it would be so easy to add something in the middle to add extra support especially if you're a larger person. This is how I built mine and I have not had any thoughts on adding reinforcement. I did go to Home depot the other day and bought 10 bags of 90LB cement, I laid two of them on the top and the 3/4 platform was bowing.

Great idea Danny. I'm going to build one in my Element but going to change how it's mounted to the seat rail. Is there any issue with putting weight on the rear of the bed? It doesn't look like you added any support to the end of the 2x3. Thanks, and great job!

Danny, I know this is personal preference but do you have any thoughts (pro or con) on using a 270 degree hinge? I'm a little bit OCD and like the idea of being able to close the underneath all the way but I'm trying to anticipate the problems this might create. I don't have any experience building anything but I want to give it a shot this spring. I'm really appreciative of your video!

I currently sleep on the floor in the back after I removed the back seats. If I followed this tutorial does it add any length? In the video it looks like maybe it’s more of a storage platform than it adds length for my feet. What do you think? I have to sleep diagonal to fit right now lol

Dannys DIY Garage Thanks for the reply. I’m wondering if I could figure out a method of attaching the platform to the 3x2 supports that is more of a “quick release” solution. That way it would be one less screw to remove/reinstall every time I needed to make the swap.

@@dannysdiygarage Danny I used your design, however I had to cut it in half in case my grandsons parents ever let go of the leash , I can put the passenger seat back in. By cutting in half I created a lot more work for myself, since I had to build a frame under neath plus the logistics of using the seat hardware just did not work out leveling from one side to the other, so I jury rigged bricks on to the mounts and put the seat hardware in the shed with the seats. Sp basically I have the same design except behind the drivers seat there is no platform until you get past the suicide doors. At that point the platform folds up for access underneath. I’ll be finishing it up this week and putting her in stealth mode as I travel to NC to retrieve my sail boat. After that i will go camper mode so I can fly fish in New Hampshire. Thanks for the basic plan, this was my second transformation, I had no idea how to mount the first to the chassis and when I hit the brakes everything came down forward to visit. I’ll try and make a video when I’m done. So far my biggest problem has been screws to long ad coming up through the bed.
