Thanks to all of the positive feedback! As I said in the video, this was born from ideas we got off of other KZfaq posts, and we felt indebted to the greater community for that and wanted to add our ideas into the mix. A few of you have asked for plans or materials lists for this set up. I have no desire to put up the plans that I drew up for a couple of reasons. First, my plans were came from tweaking and customizing other's ideas. I hope that others will build and improve on my ideas, instead of just copying them. Second, every model and car is going to be a bit different (eg: in older Elements, the front seats move forward a lot more, so you could make the leg fold out bigger). Each build will have to be custom made for your car and your needs. The only thing I wanted to "pass on" in the video was the concept of the structure.

Excellent engineering and design. I have been watching Element videos non stop for a couple of days. I saw a really good idea from one owner, where he lifted up the foot area of his mattress, his hinge point gave him a little longer tailpiece, and he was able to lift it at a 45 degree angle and let it rest on the passenger seat back, this gave him a semi reclining lounge chair effect for non sleeping activities like surfing the internet or writing or editing. I see your design can be easily adapted to his idea.

I loved this video and the design and functionality. I just built my own based on this video with my own specific modifications of course, but thanks so much for the video. It was the best of the ones I've seen. BTW, I was able to make the entire back platform that fits snugly into the walls without having to cut it and hinge it down the middle. It WILL fit through the back opening if you're interested in building your own.

It cannot be overstated how short a Honda Element is. I am 5'11" and sleeping on the floor in it is all but impossible. I made a setup that works by folding the front passenger seat back and flat and laying something flat over it. Though this setup would probably be comfortable enough for one person lying on the diagonal.

Design a my pod type camper that you can attach to the roof with the sun roof allowing you access to the sleeping area. Design it so you do not have to close off the sun roof in order to sleep and so you can have a really great mattress too. Design one that is longer and wider then the roof of the Element yet all one piece like a my pod camper to give you extra sleeping room. Airalloy or foamed aluminum for insulstion and for sound proofing would be a really great idea too. ; )

I must take issue the lie on your shirt. Bono claims he cant live "with _or_ without you." Never has he said he is unable to live 'with _and_ without you,' which is what is indicated in the Venn diagram. Other than that, a great-looking setup. Very elegant in its modularity.

@kentandashley
@kentandashley 7 жыл бұрын
I actually thought of this while I was designing the bed. The seam in the centre of the bed should serve as a break-away point for the platform. It is not attached except for the 3/8" channel held down by gravity. If rear-ended, I expect the rear part of the bed will pop up over the front end and slide forward. That said... I don't have a spare Element and sleeper set up to test rear-end collisions. =)

I don't think it much matters. My placement was determined largely by the size of the camping gear we planned to take with us. I laid out my gear on the floor of the car to get an idea of what fit best where. Best of luck on your build!

I just had some lying around, can't remember where they came from. I would suggest finding the plugs first (try auto-body shops or just check in hardware stores). Once you have the plugs, choose the legs and drill the hole to fit.

Just curious about something; i'm buying my grandma's five-speed element, and i would like very much to do a sort of conversion similar to this. My only problem is the question of staying cool. Do you just keep the ac on all night or what? Thanks for taking the time to read this comment, would love a response!
@kentandashley
@kentandashley 7 жыл бұрын
We have a netting system that goes over the rear opening, front and side windows that we based off of other videos that we watched. I think leaving all the windows open will be enough to keep cool. Running the AC would be a terrible idea, as you would probably burn through a LOT of gas and run the risk of gassing yourself as well. Watch some of the other videos on Element campers as they describe their bug netting better than I could

First of all, thank you for your video! I have a similar set-up to yours in my own Honda EX 2005. There are so many good suggestions on KZfaq, including your build. May I ask how you have liked your Ikea mattress? I normally use a very good Thermarest pad, but have found it uncomfortable after 2/3 nights. As a single women, I like to be able to keep everything in the car when I'm traveling (just in case I need to move out quickly,) but would be willing to change out some equipment for a better nights sleep. Your full-sized mattress has me thinking that it might be a really good option to invest in. Any feedback you'd be willing to share would be very much appreciated. Best regards!

+Bob Burns -Here is a material list: 2 sheets of 3/4" plywood (use the good stuff, you don't want splinters). Carpet from the dollar store for the edges and some contact cement. Piano hinge. T-nuts. Eyelets. Bungees. 3/4" aluminum pipe with rubber end caps. For the channels I ripped a 2x4 down to 1/2"x3/8" strips on a table saw. -I also used a lot of cardboard and large sheets of paper to make mock-ups and trace the contours of the vehicle. It takes a while but the adage "measure twice, cut once" really applies here (I often measured 3 or 4 times and still had to trim some more off!!).
