New Project in the Lair!! We picked up a Honda ES 6500 6.0 KVA Generator that was sold because the connecting rods have a knock. We'll diagnose the problem and rebuild the generator to original specs.

What a shame , people are clueless with running and maintaining machinery. Sounds like you got your hands full with this one . Keep us posted

Thanks for that offer, I do have a maintenance manual on this genset. I have been too busy with other projects to start this one and I don't want to get into it and set it aside but I plan to make a video of the process of refurbishing it. Thanks for commenting!!

Dang that's a nice unit. Good luck on the fix! You can definitely hear that rod knock when you turn it over. Definitely worth fixing.

Thanks for posting all the information. I think the carb is leaking from that nut on the bowl. The list of parts I will need is starting to grow!!

They are outstanding engines and virtually bulletproof I've had two of them. You didn't mention if you check spark

Since 1999, I have had one as a standby generator connected via transfer switch to my whole house. It still works great! I’ve been through several batteries and besides some damage caused by operator error, it has been bullet proof and has run flawless. Only draw back is you have to refuel after 6 to 10 hours of whole house use.

I love diggin' into these things, but this one is gonna have to wait a little bit until I get caught up on other projects. You know how it is when you spot some thing you know is a deal, if you don't jump on it - someone else will!!

What oil filter does this take? I can't seem to find a cross reference for it and nothing in the owner manual.

Was it the water pump? Sounds like same problem the one I bought had. Ended up being bad water pump. Shaft was broken and jumped time. New pump Antifreeze and timing belt it fired up first turn!

Had one exactly like this one which I parted out. Found out that the problem was the plastic gear for the oil pump failed and in effect spun a rod bearing.

It certainly has the output. Now I have to see if I didn't make a mistake in buying this!! I bought it for $200 so I have some room to work in.

Yeah, you know I'll find more wrong with it especially since I tend to replace things that are not to spec, but I really don't think this one will cost too much to repair!!

Hi. Have you found time to repair this geny yet? I'm just wondering what it took to get it functional again. I've recently purchased a sickly honda geny from a market. I cleaned the fuel bowl and air filter, changed the plug for the correct one, adjusted the tappets and changed the oil. Purchasing the geny, and the materials comes to a grand total of £86 ($131) It's cosmetically not perfect, but importantly, it runs and generates 110/230/12v well.

+aspudkicker Unfortunately, I have not had the time to mess with it. It isn't going anywhere though and I hope to get to it soon. Good luck with your project

How's the Gen coming along? I have the same model, it has 1700 hours on it, well at least that's what the Hobbs meter reads (I'm sure it was a after market Hour meter). I have done a lot of work on mine, got it without a carb. It has been running but Currently replacing the oil pump gear. The actual oil pump is all metal, but the gear that drives it is a hard plastic that is a wear item. I have a maintenance manual on this gen, if you need info let me know. Keep use posted.

I have this generator and use it seldom but I do maintain it just in case. I did have to use it for about 3 days during a storm. It ran great. Drove it home and did an inspection. When I started it the unit revved up so high I just shut it down. Dit it again but followed the linkage. With a screwdriver I played with the linkage underneath and was able to make it fluctuate RPM. When I let go it revved up again. I was not able to manually play with the RPM brom the knob above the carburetor. Where do I start with this. How do I test the auto switch? How do I check to see if the governor is bad?

there is a vaccume line on the upper carb above the battery, where does it go? mine is disconnected. and when I connect the + and - battery cables I get a spark, with the start switch off, I assume this is bad.

+jeffbradbury1 vaccume line is a vent. With the motor running, if I disconnect the + cable the motor dies. Not charging?

Anyone know how to change a starting motor / solenoid replacement on this unit ? Cheers all
@dilauroj94
@dilauroj94 11 жыл бұрын
then there is a big nut under the solenoid to keep the bowl on. other than that, the starter is really hard to get out because of these sleeve type things that keep it held in during assembly. theres a 26mm nut on the flywheel. i can think of anything else ive done to it. theres a website where i found the air filter and oil filter, which i still need to order. i dont know anything about the honda serial numbers, never could figure any of that out, neither could the small engine guy in town.

i have the same generator..a couple things i could tell you about it. You are right, it is a gx360. 359 is stamped in the side of the block. there is, or was a carb on ebay that came with the solenoid for $50. its not the right one but you can drill out the hole for the throttle linkage and i still havent figured out the choke, but im sure it can be done. the solenoid comes off with two little screws that were extremely difficult to remove, i had to buy an impact driver to budge them.

Here is a reminder about generator safety: this is only a reminder for everyone’s safety. This is just to make sure you are aware of all the warnings. Every year after hurricane and winter storms, there were reports on the news that many people have died each year when using generators due to carbon monoxide poisoning and electrocution during a power outage. There were reports about deaths when using generators when the power was out. There is something very serious that everyone should always be aware of when using generators. Some people do run their generator indoors which is not safe and that increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning which can cause death of family and you. Some people run their generator in wet conditions which can electrocute them. Here’s an advice about generator safety: please remember that you should never run your generator indoors. Remember that carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that you cannot see or smell. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. Keep that in mind. Make sure your generator is 15-20 feet away from your house and away from doors, windows, and vents. Having a carbon monoxide detector is very important against generator safety. Some people also allow children to go near the portable generator which could pose risks. We need to keep an eye on our children making sure that they are not near the portable generator so they won’t get electrocuted or burned by the generator which is dangerous. A locking enclosure also keeps kids safe. A generator shed might look like a tempting place to explore, or take cover during a game of hide-and-seek, but a generator is a dangerous piece of equipment that can cause injury. It says on the manual that we should also keep children away at all times from the portable generator to avoid injuries. Generators pose electrical risks. If you need to use your generator during wet weather, you need a generator tent to protect your generator from getting wet. Don’t let your generator get wet. Keep your generator dry and before using your generator, please make sure your hands and your generator is dry. Everything that is said on the generator’s operating manual should not be ignored. Never smoke cigarettes near the generator. Please keep flammable things away from the generator. Never overload your generator too. Your generator can catch fire. Never ever try to plug a generator cord into a wall outlet to avoid back feeding. Back feeding your generator is dangerous. Always turn on your generator first before plugging in appliances and shut off the appliances before turning your generator off. Use a heavy duty cord for your generator and the cord should not be worn out. All the instructions should be followed carefully. Never refuel your generator while it’s running. It can cause fire if fuel spills while your generator is hot. You should turn off your generator and let it cool off before refueling it. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important. This is only a reminder for everyone’s safety of using generators. Make sure your generator is properly grounded. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f5eah5Zys6uypn0.html and here is a video more about keeping others safe when using generators. Hope this helps. Thank you. This is just a reminder
