Honda Fireblade CBR900RR Review | Riding my Project Bike | 006
In this episode, I give a review of my 1996 Honda Fireblade CBR900RR SC33 project bike.
I have taken a lot of footage over the first 300 miles or so of riding this bike. Unfortunately there always seemed to be something wrong with what I had taken. Mostly the sound recording, having a lot of clicking, I am now onto my 4th microphone! But also the camera being on the wrong settings, pointing the wrong way or the weather was crap!
At last I have something that I can share. I have really enjoyed riding this old Fireblade so far. I would go so far as to say I love this bike!
I had an Aprillia RSV 3 or 4 years ago, and a Triumph 955i Daytona 3 years before that but I had forgotten the thrill of riding a sports bike. I had convinced myself they were too uncomfortable, or my recollection of the RSV Mille had left me with that. Although it was the sexiest bike I think I have ever owned, maybe I was a little bigger than I am now, so it might not be its fault.
As I mention in the video, the footrests on the Honda Fireblade are a little high for me in my old age, so you have to concentrate on getting your feet on to them. I also have an issue with being able to look over my shoulder, especially at junctions because the bars are so low. But when you are in full flight it is glorious to ride.
My regular pillion feels that the seat is the most comfortable that she has been on for a while. My most recent modern bike was a Triumph Sprint 1050 so that is quite an interesting observation as the Sprint should be winning that competition hands down. But she is only a slip of a thing, 5ft and 8 stone or so, I don’t think my son finds it as good :)
I may have a look at adjusting or moving the footrests and maybe look for slightly higher bars to make the bike more comfortable for me. But I am happy riding it as it is at the moment, I’ll leave that till the weather gets too bad to ride. We’ll see!

As a recent subscriber to your channel, I am very much enjoying the down to earth content and your clear passion for motorcycles. I have been restoring a 1997 Fireblade over the last 18 months to which I am very close to completing. I remember you saying in the first Fireblade video that you have a fix for the renowned wobbly pillion seat on the Fireblade and like all your videos I am looking forward to seeing your fix for this issue. Keep up the good work and the interesting content. Cheers Clint 🤘

They're great bikes, but aren't they all. As for the wobbly seat, if you watch the powder coating video I put a grab rail on the bike, this sorted the wobbly seat. I think the plastic legs that go down either side of the lock wear and cause it to be uneven. If you don't want a grab rail try putting some packing under the legs to see if it sorts it. If it does work out how to hold the packing in place.

Thanks for the ride!! The bike sounds great!! I've got a Harley Freewheeler trike and it's very comfortable. But there's nothing like jumping on my 750 cafe racer and winding through the gears!! It's not made for long rides. It's made for exciting rides. "Youth and skill are no match for old age and treachery." : )

Triumphs gear change is only clunky from gear 1 to 2 the rest is smooth

Make no mistake I do love Triumphs. But the first couple of gears do feel agricultural when you get on a Japanese bike. Nothing like a Harley though :)

Rattling is probably your cam chain tensioner i have replaced mine at exactly 30.000 miles cause the spring broke, i replaced it with a manual cam chain tensioner and that sorted all my rattle problems for ever :) Also when the spring fails at high rpm's you risk the chain jumping teeth and grenading your engine. If the rattle is present at Idle and or between 3,5k and 4,5k rpm's then i can guarantee you it's your cct. .

Thanks for the heads up on the cam chain tensioner, mine will probably need servicing soon too in that case being on 28k miles. Although I'm pretty certain it's not that, it doesn't make a noise at idle, and the frequency of the noise definitely doesn't change at different engine speeds. Annoyingly I think its the fairing, I think its been put back together hastily in the recent past. I'll see if I can figure that out.

It sounds like the bike has some piston slap. Do you think its rattly under load in the lower rpms? Its usually more promenant when bikes colder
@SPANNERRASH
@SPANNERRASH Жыл бұрын
Interesting. Shame it is so cold and wet or I'd get it out for a quick slap! Seriously though, I don't think it sounds particularly slappy, but you will have me listening out for it in future.

@@SPANNERRASH i think its fairly common but doesnt seem to cause any ill effect

Could it be a simple chain slap?
@Yamaprilia
@Yamaprilia Ай бұрын
@Peter-Alexander i doubt it, i have just removed a similar sounding engine and replaced it with one that's quiet because of suspected piston slap

@@Yamaprilia Hmm okay it was just a thought. I hope my SC33 will stay away from trouble for some time....🙄 other than normal maintenance.

Same, I love my RRV, very docile below 5k revs but accelerates like crazy from 6k upwards, I note your temp needle is well over to the left, same with mine, I’m wondering if this is correct or if they are running too cool?, be careful showing your speed by the way! 🙂
@SPANNERRASH

Cheers Mark, they're very versatile bikes these older fireblades, I'm really enjoying this one. I think that's normal with the temp gauge for these, but good point, I may look that up just to be sure. Can't quite remember if my previous ones were the same. Good point on the speed, duly noted!
