After 8 years of cutting the grass on a 6,000 square foot lot the mower started burning oil all of the time. Originally it would only burn oil on startup and a few seconds later stop. I thought, based on the original diagnosis, it was an intake valve seal leaking. After changing the seal it didn’t solve the problem. I always changed the oil twice a year since new. I was confident the internal parts were well lubricated. Since the mower was in excellent condition I decided to take it apart to find out the cause of the blue smoke.( burning oil) I discovered while everything inside looked perfect there was very light vertical scoring on the cylinder wall, and the piston skirt seemed to have matching lines but a little heavier. You could catch your nail but not very deep. I sanded the skirt with 600 grit wet and dry emery cloth. It removed the sharp edges of the scratches. Deeper scratches are still there. Honing the cylinder worked out very well. It looked perfect with cross hatching. I honed it for 30 seconds, checked, then did 30 more. That was enough to remove all defects. Honda piston rings were installed. Valve seats and valves looked perfect. I decided to lap the them anyway. The engine was all apart so why not. The piston rings were much springier than the originals. I’m pretty sure this was part of the oil burning cause. After reassembly the mower ran perfect with no smoke. This Is the first time I’ve ever disassembled a lawn mower engine. It was much easier than I expected. Take your time and do your research. It’s not that hard. The repair cost was less than 10% of replacing it with the same product. Of course no labour. The satisfaction of the repair was worth the time. Good luck with your project. Thanks. Roger.

I am in the process of rebuilding my dads Honda GSV190 engine,I fitted the piston & rings last night & reassembled the crankcase. I previously replaced the Valve stem oil seal which didn't Fix the problem so.I ordered a new piston, rings, timing belt & crankshaft oil seals to rebuild the engine,I needed to replace the piston because it's a 20 year old lawnmower engine & the original piston rings are no longer available from Honda, they went for thinner loe friction piston rings in the later.engines. In our case it smoked very badly on startup but it cleared up once the engine warmed up a bit,it has done a lot of work,the piston ring gap on the lower compression ring was 0.5mm which is 0.05mm above Hondas Maximum specifications,the new piston ring gap measured at.0.4mm which is good & the top compression rings gap was 0.35 mm's which is good also !

Hi RussellBooth. Sounds like you have done a thorough job. Once you open up the engine it makes sense to replace the additional parts that are ready to be swapped out. The nice thing about these engines is they are easy to work on. They seem to have fewer parts and a simple design which has been around for a while. I have the same size engine in my pressure washer. I bet your Dad is happy to have the repair done so he doesn’t have to go and get a new mower. I hope the video gave you some direction and confidence to tackle the repair. I can see you did your homework regarding parts and specifications. Nice job. Thanks for checking out the video and posting. Roger

Hi M Gomez. So do I. I watched another Utuber use a heat gun to soften the gasket by applying heat to the edges of the aluminum valve cover. He removed it with out tools. Just his hands. I definitely will try that next time. Don’t forget to wear some gloves. Thanks for watching. Roger

First and foremost, thank you for sharing your experiences and problems. I am an experienced user of mainly Honda lawn machines, including an HR217 more than twenty years ago. Currently a Honda HRH 536 HX and 2417 Riding Mower with a GCV530. From experience I know and can confirm that a regular 5w30 is not sufficient. A Rowe Hightec Synth RS 5W-40 or even better an Amsoil XL Boosted or SS Diesel (the best) 10w30 or 10w40 are recommended. The above have an ideal HTHS which is necessary. As well as a low NOACK or evaporation loss. These small adjustments will save you future problems and the engine will last a lifetime. Changing the oil before the winter and again in the summer is ideal. Always use gasoline without ethanol, and add a shot of B&S fuel stabilizer. You're doing good with it. Good luck and have fun with it! A Belgian.

@@laurapalmerTDGE Thanks for the great post full of information. There is nothing more valuable than experience. Since I’m not a specialist, when doing videos I try to use what the manufacturer states in their manuals. I’m not saying there is not a better way to do things but I need to be careful. You know it can’t hurt to change the oil to much. As you stated, I also change the oil at least 2 times a year. Originally I wasn’t going to do a video on this lawnmower. However I turned on the camera and felt there was some decent footage. This was the first time I had ever completely taken a mower apart. I was pleased that my oil change schedule was good enough that the insides looked pretty good. My moto is to promote fixing things rather than throw stuff out. I’m going to use your recommendations for my lawn mower. Let see how it goes. Thanks for checking out the video and posting. I really enjoy reading the comments. Thanks again. Roger

@@repairitdontwreckit4257 - Glad to read that it is useful to you and that it interests you. Over time you will notice the benefits, and you should take good care of that Honda or a Honda in general. To illustrate, my Honda HRH costs $2,358, the means for proper maintenance are negligible in price. And mainly you have to think about maintenance of the spark plug, the air filter, oil, and especially sharp blades. For the blades you can search for "flap disc grit 40 mower blades". You should also know that engine oil serves to cool the engine, oil absorbs and dissipates heat, as an optimal compression of the piston, etc. With what I recommended you will hardly have any oil consumption, but you can still check the level periodically. A quick expl. about a 10w30 : 10W: The "10" refers to the oil's viscosity at cold temperatures (lower temperatures). The lower this number, the thinner the oil is at cold temperatures. A lower number here means the oil will circulate more easily when the engine is cold, which is important for engine startups in colder climates. The "W" stands for "Winter". It's an indication that this number pertains to the oil's cold temperature characteristics. 30: This number refers to the oil's viscosity at 100°C (212°F). The higher this number, the thicker the oil will be at high (operating) temperatures. A thicker oil at high temperatures can be beneficial because it provides a better protective film between engine parts at those temps. So, in the case of 10W30 oil: The oil behaves like a 10-weight (thinner) oil when the engine is cold, ensuring it circulates easily and provides lubrication. At operating temperatures, it behaves like a 30-weight (thicker) oil, ensuring it provides adequate protection under the heat and stress of the engine. In summary, multi-grade oils like 10W30 have been formulated to protect the engine under a range of temperatures, making them versatile and suitable for many driving conditions. It's always essential to refer to your vehicle's owner manual to see which oil grade is recommended for your specific engine and driving conditions. Enjoy!

Hi Phillip. Thanks for checking out the video and posting comments. There’s definitely more than one way to keep the valves in place. Not everyone has a compressor. For me it was a little scary thinking what next if the valve dropped. At the end of the day I ending up taking the thing apart. It was a good experience. @@repairitdontwreckit4257 that's very true Roger. I'm currently rebuilding one of these and am encountering the same thing as you did. I'm going to see if I can get a flex hone tool like the one you have as I too am going to be fitting new rings. Could you tell me what size you bought? The cylinder is 69mm diameter but I understand that you have to buy something larger than that 🤔 Flex hone are harder to find here in the UK but Amazon have some listed so maybe they will be able to post one out to me if I can find the right one.

@@MrTumbleweed22 I went to the flex hone website. They state to order the honing tool the size of the diameter of the bore. It will be delivered slightly oversized. In your case the bore is 69 mm. They don’t make a 69 mm diameter, but the next size is 70 mm. This is what you should order. If the cylinder is aluminum the site recommends a honing tool that is made from aluminum oxide. I used a 240 grit. The damage on the cylinder walls for my lawn mower wasn’t to bad overall. I used motor oil to lubricate the tool and the cylinder. It doesn’t take much time to hone the cylinder. Start at say 20 seconds or less and check how it’s going. Always keep the tool moving. There are videos on the flex tool website and on utube. The flex tool website also has recommended rpm speeds to help you get the best results. It’s not hard as long as you follow the basic instructions from the manufacturer. Have a look at some of the videos to get an idea of what to expect before ordering. Also double check what I have said to make sure I didn’t miss anything. It’s been while since I did this video. It doesn’t take much to get the cross hatch going on the cylinder walls. I hope this helps you. If you have any more questions just post them and I will do my best to answer them. Thanks . Roger

Hi Matt Caldwell. No I didn’t. I went on utube and found a video where a guy used a gear clamp. Something you would use to secure hoses to fittings. Usually stainless steel. It was a little tricky but if you take your time it will work. It took a couple of tries to figure it out but I got it to work. I didn’t feel like buying the tool for one job unless I had to. Any hardware store will carry them. Thanks for watching the video and posting. Roger

Hi Joelmb. You got me thinking. It’s been a while since I did the video. I went back to the engine parts list. It shows one seal on the intake valve. Just to be safe if your doing work on your engine double check your set up. I’m thinking a seal on the exhaust valve wouldn’t last long. Also, on the intake, oil is drawn into the combustion chamber as there is vacuum. That’s why they have a seal there to control the amount of oil on the the valve stem. On the exhaust you need lubrication also. From what I’ve read there’s a little bit of pressure so it’s not a problem with oil getting into the combustion chamber on the exhaust side. I pretty sure the engines have to meet emissions standards at the time of manufacture. The engine has been designed to pass emissions without a seal on the exhaust side. Whew. It’s a topic in itself. Thanks for watching and posting. Roger

@repairitdontwreckit4257
@repairitdontwreckit4257 Ай бұрын
timdenton I’m looking at the part number for the piston you have. It doesn’t look complete. For example the piston number for my mower is 13101-Z8A-900. The rings that I used were 13010-ZOL-014. These are Honda part numbers based on the serial number on the engine. The Honda website for parts was not to bad to use once you got the hang of it. If the piston is a Honda part I seen no reason you can’t find the rings for it. With parts it’s all about the numbers. From my experience a lot of the parts were the same for different years and models but the engine size was always the same such as the GVC160. You still need to check the numbers as there’s a ton of parts out there and there can be subtle differences that are not noticeable to a visual examination. Thanks for posting your question. Roger

One advantage of going to the Amazon listing is you can read the reviews to get a good idea of what people think of the tool. I took a quick look. It had a lot of 5 star ratings.
