How to change the oil in your Honda EU7000is Generator start to finish. Very detailed and clear video step by step.
This is only a guide and shows you how I do it. Always follow the original owners manual provided by Honda.

Great tip with the oil filler cap funnel! I have EU6500is and refilling the oil is tricky. Good video.

Nice job! For those who torque everything (like myself) the spec for the drain plug is 17 ft lbs on a gx390 engine.

That drain plug, get a magnetic one, the same as the filler cap/dipstick. If you do not start yours often, add a battery tender/maintainer. All are sold in Amazon.

Thank you so much for making this video! The Honda manual does not mention the size of the drain bolt (12mm). I'm glad you mentioned that. Also, do you have any opinion on using synthetic oil in the generator?

Thank you for the nice comments I really appreciate it! For my Honda generators I purchase their branded oil and I use the standard (non-synth) oil fir at least the first 30 hours and then I will typically go to their synthetic but I don't stress much about it either way.

Thank you you can use other oils that are the right weight. This is one of the few things I do get their branded oil for. Really you dont need to but sometimes the price is almost the same.

Very helpful video. Question: Would you use zddp additive to Honda Eu7000is gen with 1900 hrs? If so, how much additive? I'm currently using Honda 10W-30 oil.

Two improvements that this generator could use #1 off road pneumatic tires. Makes moving it over grass or uneven surfaces a breeze. #2 I added sound deadening mat to both doors. I observed a noticable sound reduction. Not that it needed it but in today's times one might want to take a little extra precaution to not be "heard"

I know what you mean, I would like a filter but they never include one. Only some of their legacy models had them and all have been discontinued. The power of Honda I guess, but they do seem to last.

It is easier to remove and reinstall the drain plug by using an extension between the socket and ratchet.

Great Video!! Explains all that is needed very well!! I’m not very mechanically inclined, but this looks like something I can take on without having to go to the dealer!!! LOL How many hours do you think the 7000 will run given proper maintenance?? Thank You!

I know people that have 4000 hours on the previous 6500 so I would expect 3000+ hours. Thank you for the comments as well, also have a maintenance video showing how to change the spark plug and air cleaner on my channel.

@@SilverCymbal That's wonderful, and great to hear. I've traded my EU3000is with about 150 hours on it to a friend who has a EU7000is with a lot more hours. He used it to run a small food truck and it was *WAY* over what he needed as it was just for lights and a small fridge so it never ran above the lowest idle. My application is for a home backup, so the extra energy is welcomed - and we typically only need it for 40-50 hours a year. I've gone through the spark plug and filter videos, they were a big help too!! Once the generator is in place and i've got it all tuned up, i'm interested in installing a remote start kit. Have you done that before?

The foil food trays work great. Just be sure it doesn't have a hole poked in it if you are using a leftover one from the kitchen. Chance are you will still need a funnel to dispose of the old oil collected in the tray. I return it to the bottle the new oil came in, cap it, and take it to the recycling station.

just wondering why you used GN4 motorcycle oil? It has different properties than regular oil due to it is designed to be used with a motorcycle that has a wet clutch system.

I didn't know how to do it and I kinda of lift it up to put the oil and it doesn't start but I also add 10w 40 di I messed it up by lifting it or do I just have to change the oil for a 10w30

Actually, Honda's manual says to fill oil on flat surface till it starts to overflow.

No. Honda only uses filter in a couple of older models. Not sure of the reasoning but they seem to last forever.

I've got a question is this generator supposed have gas in it I just bought it brand new in the box from generators direct. I opened up the gas gap and it smells like gas did yours come to you that way not to mention my wheels are bent.

So....Direct from Honda no. There is no gas in the tank at all and I have never smalled fuel at all. However the dealer may choose, or even be required to test run the unit first to make sure it works before shipping. I don't generally think that is what happens with mail order but it impossible. Are there any hours on the hour meter showing when you start it? I don't think that can be bypassed.

I just received my new Honda eu7000is today I assembled it and when I opened the door to add oil the weather stripping around the door hits the wheel any idea of what is wrong

Yes, you put the axel assembly on backwards. If you take the bolts off the bottom and reverse it the other way the wheels will be slightly further back allowing the door to open. Hope this helps. Please subscribe for more great videos.

I think there's a short side and a long side on the axel where they bolt up do you know in which direction there supposed to point does that make a difference

15 Bucks??????? For one quart of oil? An extension between the ratchet and the socket makes it easier to remove and reinstall the drain plug.

Honda oil varies in price but it's usually about $10/quart. Good idea about the extension as well in case you don't have access to a flex head. Thank you for the comment and for watching.

Honda generators no longer use oil filters. There may be one commercial model that does but this EU7000i and basically all others do not use them.

How can you overfill using a funnel if you install one point one quart of oil your comments make no sense?

There is a popular funnel that screws into the opening and its very easy to overfill since it can fill up into this funnel. Also you should always fill it to the top of the threads as shown per Honda. If you use an exact amount you may over or underfilll since the amount that drains out can vary a little. Just best practices from Honda but I know many people do what you describe as well Thank you for watching and best wishes to you.

Wow! I am surprised to hear that. What did they say went wrong. I only have a few hundred hours on mine, but older models have had up to 3000 hrs with good running still

WARNING - I did the first oil change (10 hours after purchase) - as soon as I opened the dipstick, oil came flowing out of the hole into the housing of the generator.

I hate to hear this since that means it was overfilled by whoever prepped it. Even dealers mess this up but it’s doubtful it caused a problem but now you can do it the right way going forward.

@@SilverCymbal Well, thought i wiped up, there is now a thin coat of oil on the bottom platform, and on the underside of the generator behind the drainplug. Hope that's ok.

It's a bit of a pain but if you can use a shirt or something in there wipe around and you will get most of it up and eventually it will be gone. Lots of nooks and crannies in the bottom but that won't cause any issues, just a cosmetic thing.

You are supposed to replace the crush washer each time you change oil. All in all changing oil on these Honda generators is a major pain due to all the enclosure hardware. The smaller EU3000 Handy is even worse. To eliminate all the mess, use an oil sucker or vacuum oil extraction tool. I purchased one from Amazon for about $50 and I now use it on all my small engines. No more mess on the chassis, no more crush washers, no more leaky drain screws. Once you use an oil sucker you will never look at a drain screw again. :-)
