First of all, it was great hearing Penny’s mellifluous voice. And…You are something else, Brother! That microwave must be 12 volt I guess… pop me in a nice pasty please…. Quite a trick with lifting up the Goldwing’s skirts. 😎 Have a great week there… 🏍👍🏍

I have carried out the rebuilding of my GL1100 rear disc calliper on a couple of occasions, much easier on the naked 1100 as there is plenty of access to the calliper itself. I used stainless steel pistons on the rebuild as I hoped they would fair better in our climate. I purchased them, and the assorted seals etc from a company based at Chesterfield called Powersports. They do a huge range of bike relating braking components, they also will undertake the refurbishment of old callipers if you don’t fancy doing the job yourself. On examining the new pistons it was obvious that the final diameters of them had been finished by precision grinding as opposed to just being a turned finish. Much better in my opinion. Strange thing is that when I went to their facility to pick up my kit I thought that recognised the Manger of the sales department. We starting speaking and it then dawned on me as he was the chap who purchased my Kawasaki Zephyr 1100 several years ago. The bike only had a few thousand miles on the clock and was in immaculate condition, it had never seen rain and was kept in my heated garage from new. He still has the bike, in fact it’s on display in the workshop there. To be honest I wish I had never sold it as I have never seen another Zephyr that was in such great condition. I obviously asked if I could buy it back off him, but he very politely said no! I think the Zephyrs are starting to be appreciated as modern classics, and they are becoming a bit sought after. Couple of things to add Del, I always use a brass haired wire brush when cleaning bike parts, I think it’s a bit kinder to the parts you are cleaning. My old Dad used to soak corroded fasteners with a bit a diesel for a day or to before trying to loosen them. He used to call it ‘poor-mans penetrating fluid’. Great content Del, love your work and passion for the old Goldwings. I will not make the mistake of selling my venerable old GL1100 as I did with the Zephyr. I think she is a keeper!
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 2 жыл бұрын
I totally agree Michael, Diesel or Kerosene work really well as a soaking penetrant, and yeah, keep the 1100, they're getting rare now and still more reliable than a Briggs and Stratton diesel ..!

I just love your video's and the detail you describe. I just tried to get my muffler off to change rear end fluid and could not budge it even after soaking it in penetrating oil. I seen when you reinstalled your mufflers you only used a nut driver and only hand tighten it. After seeing that I better go loosen mine up. Thanks again for a very informative video.

My son has a 1500 Goldwing. He does much the same thing to access the rear wheel but he does not remove the mufflers to get the wheel off. Instead, he disconnects the shock lowers and this allows the axle to go lower or higher than the mufflers so it can be removed easily. If you are working on a Valkyrie you pretty much have to remember this trick since the mufflers are one with the headers and requires them to be removed from the heads.
@Moonfleet41

@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 3 ай бұрын
On 30 year old fasteners, i never use the full tourque value anyway, metal fatigues, threads get stretched and damaged over years of doing up and undoing... so learn the factory manual value, then adjust down acordingly, experience will guide you to knowing what works, stays done up and doesn't strip threads..!

Yes mate, it should be the same.. take the seat off, and below where the pillion sits you'll see the two subframe bolts....loosen those so it can swivel forward.... then inside the boxes towards the front you should see two rubber grommets, pop them out and there should be the bolts under there to loosen... the subframe slots over those bolts like a "Y" rather then the bolts going through a hole... so just loosen them and lift the whole tail up.. You obviously need to drop the pipes off, but it should be the same procedure mate..!

Thankx for the trick !!! why did you remove the right side exhaust ?
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 Жыл бұрын
You have to remove both silencers as they hang on the underside of the boxes, you can't lift the boxes up and forward with them attached!

Do you just loosen all 4 bolts, or do you remove the 2 bolts in the panniers and loosen the top 2 bolts under the seat?
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 2 жыл бұрын
You can just loosen the pannier bolts as they're on a 'fork' mount, rather than a hole, but it can help with re-installing the fork if you take them out.

This is great! I’m new to Goldwing and I’d wish someone would’ve told me about this trick here when I changed my rear tire! You loosen the frame bolts and removed the bolts in the panniers?
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 2 жыл бұрын
You only need to loosen the bolts in the pannier as they mount through a fork, not a hole, but it can help to remove them when it comes to dropping the back down again... either way, it works!

Howdy, I am 68 years old. I have been riding bikes since I was 10 years old. Purchased my first Harley in 1975. Have always done my own maintenance. Just purchased my first Goldwing, a 1996. The throttle is kind of slow and sticky to return to idle. Normally I would lube the cables but this thing has cruise control!!??. Can you do a video on lubing the throttle cables on a Goldwing?

Fascinating! I totally geek out over little tricks like that bodywork swiveling thing. I always thought my '82 CX500Turbo had a similarly neat feature, where the whole front section below the windscreen pivoted forward like a mini Jaguar E-Type bonnet, and was held in place with two braided steel cables. The microwave killed me hahahaha

What is it about your winter that fouls the brake like that. The service of my 2002 and 2018 GL1800 is all done on center stand with me lying on floor; or unbolting caliper and working on bench.

One more question. I bought a 95 with no seat, so I just ordered one. I will need the seat bolts. Does the end of the bolt need to be tapered? Or could I just get a standard stainless steel button head bolt?
