A fun little ride on my awesome mint 1989 Honda Hawk GT NT650
this vintage Honda motorcycle sold in the Japan was called the Bros ,the bike came in 400 and 650cc.It may only have 58 horsepower but it's one of the best handling bikes ever made, a cult bike known to be a canyon carver and a great race bike.

I’ve owned a lot of bikes over the years but the Hawk was probably my favorite.

Nice, original, clean. Learned to ride on a 88, bought new in 2000 in the crate from a gentleman who owned a dealership in the 80s.

I have a bog standard Honda Bros 650 Mk1 RC31 (only added front rising rate suspension). It's never going to be a rocket ship, on the other hand it weighs only 184.2kg / 406 lbs (wet weight), which means its 56.1 hp gets it to 60mph in 4.4 seconds and 1/4 mile in 13.6 seconds, this's enough to beat most BMW M5's! It has good low down torque and gets an easy 46.6mpg, plus it's nice and slim for dealing with traffic jams and nothing touches down when cornering hard on most roads. Many people simply find riding a small bike hard is simply more fun than riding a fast bike slow. You will not find a 4 cylinder bike as easy to maintain as this. I also have an RD350 YPVS (63hp), (think RZ350 YPVS in the US). The two bikes are like chalk and cheese, the YPVS needs constant rebuilding and is the most fun per mile, while I do next no maintenance on the BROS and it looks after me, rain or shine. It does help to have new tyres.

showing the in gear acceleration would have been useful. I loved my 400 in 1990s, looking for a 650 now for some classic memories. They say not very powerful, but the low down grunt was amazing, I used to drag off CBR600s at the traffic lights, until they got into their power band of course, but hey, atleast I made it across the junction first.

Accross "the junction"? That is probably just how long it took for them to even realize you had the odacity to suggest trying to beat them ? At which time they sightly rolled the throttle back and left you for dead...lol

In 1988 I had recovered from a really bad crash totaling my 86 limited edition GSXR750 .... Although I promised my wife after that no more crotch rocket hyper fast weekends in the canyons I nevertheless was not about to stop riding...So when I saw the new Honda Hawk GT I absolutely fell in love...it had as much to do with the bikes design and components as it did magazine's rave reviews nearly worshiping the motorcycle as the missing unicorn....boy was I DISAPONTED! This model is GUTLESS....It COULD have been a wonderful AWESOME bike if only it had even the power of say an SV650 v twin (which of course did not exist for another 10 years) ...I know Two Brothers Racing did a lot of development on the hawk's motor but there was NO cheap way to any significant gains and Carillo rods, new carbs, head portig/valve and cam changes , ignition etc etc seemed insanely stupid to persue for just a toy....maybe to spend the price of the bike AGAIN trying to get 70 hp out of the thing?....and even then it would probably be a maintenance nightmare? ( not to mention bye bye warranty. on still new bike?) ....So as much as I REALLY liked everything about the bike save it sorely no desperately lacking another 20hp ? I sold it and felt really cheated actually. F*ck Honda for failing to deliver the obvious! Which they only shot themselves in the foot anyway cause the bikes did not sell being passed like they were standing still everywhere ....I sure did my share of bashing the model after I sold it. It was like if you discovered a woman that was a total TEN in the looks department and was actually available and ready to be your gal....but the moment you start dating her you discover she has very little going for her at all....just dull as hell both mentally and with physical charms....so regretfully because she is so easy on the eyes you have to just cut her loose in order to make room for a meaningful fun gal in your life....that was my Hawk GT Now the Suzuki SV is not the looker that the GT is but is hands down a WAY better more fun option! It's like Suzuki looked at the Hawk , listened to people had sampled them and said "oh hell WE can fix THAT little problem (lack of power) and maybe sell a gajillion of em! So they did.....Honda made other bikes in the displacement catagory with plenty of power but to my knowledge they never came back and tried another 650 Vtwin sport bike....did they? In fact other than Suzuki? WHO really has done another Vee this size up right? Several grand slams in larger displacement and some nice performance from parallels...but Vees? What was Ducati's smallest Vee?

BTW the only thing an SV 650 Suzuki needs to be what the Hawk never could be? Is one of the model/years that had a fairing to hide the ugly ass Suzuki SV motor! (08 or 09?) OR one of the many that have aftermarket retro fit fairing IF done well (big if) GREAT motor! Motor jjust stinks to look at IMHO.....but with the full wrap fairing THAT would be one really sweet little ride! WAY nicer ride than the Hawk! Way easier to find and maintain also! Suzuki has been building that platform for over 20 years! I imagine Suzuki keeps that model a little nude and ugly to maintain it's place in the product line as a lower price point....if it looked nice it would steal plenty of Ninja sales!

@@nigelwolfe6150 How much power do you need for street riding. The street is not a race track.

You should never down shift to first gear, when coming to a stop !

Maybe in a manual car with no synchromesh in 1st but motorcycle gearboxes are totally different from cars. By all means change down into 1st while in motion

@@nickkluger97 I read my Honda Owner's Manuals from the '80's. They tell you to downshift all the way. From Honda. There are different theories on that..... and 1st is a little different from 2-6, BUT, it is not insane, nor weird, ride your bike.

There have been countless times I've slowed for a stop only to find a car/truck bearing down on me. I wouldn't want to rely on 2nd gear getting me out of the way. I recommend shifting to whatever gear is appropriate for your speed. The last thing you want is it to stall in an emergency situation. JMO.
