What an incredible deal you got on this car! I've had my 07 TL for the last 4 years, 200k miles and it's by far the best car I've had. I'm almost scared to get a newer Acura. Insane reliability and build quality. I put a bunch of sound deadner in the car, and its whisper quiet now. Hoping to take it to half a million miles on the original transmission. 👍😏

8:46 this is gold right there for me. Once I saw you used your fingers and I got the sequence correct It came right off the bracket. I used my left hand thumb to push in toward the engine on the bracket clip and as the springy of the bracket pulled it toward the engine I used my right hand to pull the assembly back as counterforce. I’m only a DIY as necessary so for you full time mechanics these tips are normal everyday things….

One thing I wish I was told a loooong time ago is that these are Air/Fuel Ratio sensors. Not regular oxygen sensors. The downstreams are oxygen sensors but the upstreams are A/F. You need to know this if you have any hope of reading the sensor's output on a scan tool. Its a whole different beast. I hope this assists someone out there.

You can use the sensor socket to take off a sensor that you want to reinstall (inspection, cleanup) by just using a hose clip over the socket. Doesn't even need to be any tighter than a push fit. Never broke a split socket with this method, and you can actually buy split sockets with purpose made sleeves (amazing for use with bleeding nipples on brakes).

Note that O2 sensors monitor the end of the engine combustion cycle and and can be affected by upstream issues and so it can be useful to test them when removed for the car. Just check the heater wires (usually same coloured) for continuity and modest resistance (generally less than 30ohms) and the put a voltmeter (set to low voltage) across the other two wires. Holding with long reach pliers, as a way of not burning your fingers, put the tip of the O2 sensor in and out of propane/butane flame. The flame is void of O2 and provides heat. When in the flame a working O2 sensor voltage should rise to about 0.9 volts and out of the flame will drop below 0.1volts. If the sensor is caked in carbon to the extent that it inhibits O2 sensing (the voltage always stays low) then as a last resort you can heat the tip to red hot to burn off the residue. Often this will restore full function but it will be necessary to work out why your exhaust is so soot laden. A rich running engine can be due to: something as simply as low coolant so the sensor prevents the engine from entering closed loop operation; or over estimation of the amount of O2 entering the engine by a bad MAF; or excess of fuel delivery due to a bad/leaking fuel pressure regulator.

Shit, I'd never cut the wires. What if I can't get the O2 out and have to bail on the job? I've never had an O2 sensor socket split on me, mine are impact sockets if it makes any difference, but those were the best damn investment ever. Total game changer when breaking sensors loose.

The methods I show in my videos are my methods. They are not the only methods, but they do come from 20+ years of experience working as an automotive technician who spent the majority of my tenure servicing Hondas and Acuras. I'm not saying that your concerns are unfounded, I've seen O2 sensors get stuck in manifolds in the past, but I was able to remove them, usually with the application of heat, then I repaired the threads, and installed a new sensor. I have a special tap for this very thing. I have not yet needed to replace a manifold due to an O2 sensor issue using these methods. Thats been my experience. I'm not saying your experience will be the same. That would be foolish, and also arrogant in my eyes. I merely show what I feel would be the most effective, and efficient way to go about something. Thank you for your comment.
@MrSlowestD16
@MrSlowestD16 4 жыл бұрын
@@ericthecarguy yeah, I think you have better means both in terms of knowledge & experience and in terms of tools in case shit goes sideways when removing them. Especially on something like that j series where I'd not feel comfortable getting a torch on that rear sensor, don't know wtf I'd do. I think being a non professional adds a certain level of caution to many tasks bc it's not as easy to back up if we screw up. If those o2 impacts split I just take them back to craftsman and they replace without issues, but at least the car stays drivable until I try and figure out what in the shit I'm going to do for the next steps, which may require being done a few days later after asking people online or real mechankcs or whatnot. Also, I think doing as few of them as I do the tools get used a lot less, and especially in a climate I have (moderate hot to moderate cool year round, no snow/salt) I think the chances of me running into a crazy sensor that's rusted in there is pretty low compared to somebody like you who may have done thousands by now and come across them in all types of situations. Hope that clears up my perspective, as a diy'er.

Thomas B ha it's usually easier to just cut the wire and use a normal socket. Then tighten the new one with an open end wrench. The o2 sockets usually bend out and just strip it when it's stuck. BTW it's really really hard to drill out the porcelain stuff in an O2 sensor!
