The spinner is actually very effective in separating debris from the oil.. Honda has been using this method for 60 years. Also, you need not clean the oil spinner every oil change..recommended interval is 2500 miles.

That two pounds of weight actually store energy ie. Flywheel to help the engine get the bike moving. It slows the reving but aids in getting over objects. It's like a rotational capacitor. You may regret removing it.

I’ve gone without it for quite a while now, mainly as I tend to be looking for more acceleration than overall top speed. But I totally see what you’re saying, I wonder if the lightened spinners may be a good balance.

@@UnknownOverLand well, I used to work on hondas back in the 80,s. The xr500 was made with a lighter flywheel. It was quicker reving but, lacked the grunt of the xl500s. It's all about what you want...quick revving or...that rotational help you get from that weight spinning? Bottom line though... I love my monkey bike... I get all kinds of looks... I'm 6'6" and I look like a gorilla on the bike.. still love it.

It´s supposed to give better response and instant acceleration, since don´t have to move the inertia of the heavy oil spinner... but once the cranckshaft is rotating, the oil spinner adds momentum to the rotation (torque) and it´s better for maintaining top speed.
@UnknownOverLand
@UnknownOverLand 3 жыл бұрын
That makes sense, I’ve been wondering if a lightened spinner provides a bit of both.

Definitely on my list to do it’s a great mod. It’s rediculous to have to take the case off all the time. I actually used a leather belt and a large set of vice grips on the spinner. And way worth adding the oil cooler

I’ll likely need to start looking into an oil cooler soon, hoping to get away without it for a little bit longer.

Nice video! I'm wanting to install this as well, both to get rid of the spinner but also to have access to those oil ports for an oil cooler. WIth the Yoshi pipe where it is, does it look like there's still room to route oil cables on those red banjo bolts or not? It's hard to see in the video, but it looks like there wouldn't be clearance?
@UnknownOverLand
@UnknownOverLand 4 жыл бұрын
It does look like it’ll be tight, so might depend on the oil lines you use to the oil cooler. I took some photos and dropped them on my instagram (@unknown_overland) to show some of that spacing from a few different angles.

Please, how much did you tighten those 6 springs ? I don't have tools to measure torque. Thanks for the videos. Also, I wonder if full synthetic oil will minimize residue build up.
@UnknownOverLand
@UnknownOverLand 3 жыл бұрын
I’d recommend a torque wrench for some of these things, but I know it goes not having it. It’s supposed to be about 12Nm which is pretty tight but not really really hard.

Thanks! And that's a great idea. I went ahead and posted the links for what I used. Many of the parts can be found elsewhere, but Hard Racing did a great job of working with me on what was needed, they also bundle some of the options so a good place to go and check out.

@@baldilocks1914 No problem. Those bolts are torqued to 7Nm (5.2 ft.lbs.). Previously I had also put on some blue locktite, but skipped that this time. Hopefully that doesn't come back and bite me.

Hi, @6:44, is the oil passing through the little hole and get in the oil filter? The second hole (small one) on the right near the hand :-). Also, would you have the torque setting number for the big bolt replacing the oil spinner and bolts that hold the clutch plate. Many thanks.
@UnknownOverLand
@UnknownOverLand 3 жыл бұрын
I believe that you're right, that does look like one of the pasages into where the oil filter is on the new cover. The clutch plate bolts torque to 12Nm (9lbf-ft). The lock nut on the spinner is torqued to 64Nm (47lbf-ft).

I just recently had the side cover off for the clutch disc upgrade (first time since this video) and then again shortly after swapping the lifter plate (link to that in the description box) and there was barely anything either time. The larger filter along with a magnetic drain plug seems to be doing a great job.

Sorry for the silly question, but is it possible to remove the spinner, without any disadvantage? is the reason, for removal reducing the dynamic masses?
@UnknownOverLand
@UnknownOverLand 4 жыл бұрын
The oil spinner's job is to help filter contaminates out of the oil, so if you remove the spinner you'll still need some way to do that filtering (the kitaco cover does this by using an actual oil filter). If you're looking to reduce mass but keep the original cover there are lighter spinner options available (I don't have immediate links handy) that still perform the job but with a lot less weight.
@superquax1
@superquax1 4 жыл бұрын
Unknown Overland yes thanks for your answer. i asked because i ordered ine hour before a lighter oil spinner. So this is the better way for me but i assume there is not a big difference in dynnamic.
@UnknownOverLand
@UnknownOverLand 4 жыл бұрын
I've read from some of the Grom people that even the lighter oil spinner makes a difference when the engine is spinning up. Basically, you'll feel a bit better response from the moment you pull back on the throttle to when power is delivered (we're not talking a huge change, but you can actually feel its there).

Yup, exactly. While there is likely math behind the idea of reducing weight on the spinner, since the engine is so small a lot of this is going to be "it just feels bettter" and not entirely scientific. :)

Helpful video! , whats the name of the tool that locks the spinner , red clamp?
@UnknownOverLand

Thanks so much, it’s called a fly wheel holding tool. There are a few other methods of you don’t want to buy the tool, many (and I’ve done this a couple times) have just used a coin to keep the gears from spinning (just make sure and not lose or leave it in there).

@UnknownOverLand

I haven't noticed any whirring sound in there but it could very well be covered up by the sound from the intake or exhaust. How loud of a whirring are you hearing?

@@UnknownOverLand it's very light. Most people wouldn't hear it probably. I'm assuming it's from the super oil pump since it's from that area but you can't hear it above 30ish because of the wind or exhaust noise. Just thought I would ask... Hasn't blown up yet so I think I'm okay lol

can you tell me if the clutch springs make the clutch more of a normal feeling on the hand I find the stock really soft and have to release almost to full to get the bike to move. making a pain on take off. want the engage like a normal bike. thoughts ?
@UnknownOverLand
@UnknownOverLand 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the stronger springs definitely help with that. I had the same problem with the stock clutch setup, it always seemed to engage only at the very end of the clutch pull. Since changing the springs it feels a lot more “normal”. I’d also recommend a stronger clutch lifter plate since some have had their stock one crack with the stronger springs.

@@UnknownOverLand thanks for the reply who supplied your springs and plate? and where in Colorado do you live? my brothers in the springs area and these small bikes have a hard time in that elevation, I'm in Pa. and when we bring bike here from there what a difference in proformace,

@@wadehoagland9188 I picked up the springs and plate from Hard Racing (the springs are kitaco 60% springs and the plate is Hard Racing's RP Billet Clutch Spring Plate). I live out near Boulder, and the altitude is definitely an issue. When you bring your bike out here you may want to try and reset the ECU into altitude mode and see if it makes any kind of performance difference. Some claim it helps.
